Steady-state dynamic response of various hysteretic systems endowed with fractional derivative elements

2019

In this paper, the steady-state dynamic response of hysteretic oscillators comprising fractional derivative elements and subjected to harmonic excitation is examined. Notably, this problem may arise in several circumstances, as for instance, when structures which inherently exhibit hysteretic behavior are supplemented with dampers or isolators often modeled by employing fractional terms. The amplitude of the steady-state response is determined analytically by using an equivalent linearization approach. The procedure yields an equivalent linear system with stiffness and damping coefficients which are related to the amplitude of the response, but also, to the order of the fractional derivativ…

A novel digital control for DC/DC converters to improve steady-state performances

2006

This paper describes an innovative digital PWM control implementation for low voltage, high current DC-DC converters. The proposed technique, based on the use of a low resolution DAC, improves steady-state performances, minimizing limit cycle effects. The novel technique is tested on a FPGA-based single phase buck converter operating at 250 kHz. A detailed description of the proposed architecture is given and test results, simulation and experimental ones, are shown

Regulation of the tolerogenic function of steady-state DCs

2014

Dendritic cells (DCs) are master regulators of T-cell responses. After sensing pathogen-derived molecular patterns (PAMPs), or signals of inflammation and cellular stress, DCs differentiate into potent activators of naive CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cells through a process that is termed DC maturation. By contrast, DCs induce and maintain peripheral T-cell tolerance in the steady state, that is in the absence of overt infection or inflammation. However, the immunological steady state is not devoid of DC-activating stimuli, such as commensal microorganisms, subclinical infections, or basal levels of proinflammatory mediators. In the presence of these activating stimuli, DC maturation must be calibra…

Effects of 3rd-harmonic voltage content on dielectric losses of solid insulating materials

1981

Dielectric losses in solid insulating materials subjected to voltages containing 3rd harmonics are studied. By simple theoretical analysis, some curves are obtained showing the behaviour of the ratio between the dielectric losses in the distorted steady state and in a reference sinusoidal steady state, against 3rd-harmonic content. The reference sinusoidal voltage amplitudes were selected in two different ways; namely, such as to have either peak value or effective value equal to those of distorted waveform.Separate effects of harmonic content and of effective value of the applied voltage are shown through the correspondence of every 3rd-harmonic phase angle. Percentage differences between …

A Calvin Bestiary

2017

This paper compares a number of mathematical models for the Calvin cycle of photosynthesis and presents theorems on the existence and stability of steady states of these models. Results on five-variable models in the literature are surveyed. Next a number of larger models related to one introduced by Pettersson and Ryde-Pettersson are discussed. The mathematical nature of this model is clarified, showing that it is naturally defined as a system of differential-algebraic equations. It is proved that there are choices of parameters for which this model admits more than one positive steady state. This is done by analysing the limit where the storage of sugars from the cycle as starch is shut d…

Improving the speed estimation by load torque estimation in induction motor drives: an MRAS and NUIO approach

2021

This paper proposes the application of the NUIO inside a FOC induction motor drive for the simultaneous estimation of the load torque and the rotor speed. The idea is to estimate at first the speed with the current model in parallel with a reference model developed on the basis of the voltage model of the induction machine. Then, the estimated speed is given as input to a nonlinear unknown input observer (NUIO) to estimate the load torque. This estimation is then used to correct the previous estimation of the speed. Simulation and experimental results confirm the goodness of the method for an extended range of speed and different load torque, and they confirm the reduction of error in trans…

Sigma-convergence in the OECD: Transitional Dynamics or Narrowing Steady State Differences?

2002

The empirical literature of growth has steadly improved the econometric methods used mainly to address the effect of cross-country heterogeneity in the estimated convergence rate. In this paper, we highlight an important implication of this process of econometric refinement that has so far received little attention. We show that the picture that emerges from models that allow for generalised heterogeneity changes our view of the process of convergence within the OECD. Estimation methods that allow for non or partial heterogeneity stress the importance of transitional dynamics in the process of convergence. Thus sigma-convergence is mostly accounted for by beta-convergence. On the contrary, …

Sticky-Price Models and the Natural Rate Hypothesis

2005

A major criticism of standard specifications of price adjustment in models for monetary policy analysis is that they violate the natural rate hypothesis by allowing output to differ from potential in steady state. In this paper we estimate a dynamic optimizing business cycle model whose price-setting behavior satisfies the natural rate hypothesis. The price-adjustment specifications we consider are the sticky-information specification of Mankiw and Reis (2002) and the indexed contracts of Christiano, Eichenbaum, and Evans (2005). Our empirical estimates of the real side of the economy are similar whichever price adjustment specification is chosen. Consequently, the alternative model specifi…

Hybrid Modelling and Control of a Class of Power Converters With Triangular-Carrier PWM Inputs

2021

In this paper, a new control design procedure for a class of power converters based on hybrid dynamical systems theory is presented. The continuous-time dynamics, as voltage and current signals, and discretetime dynamics, as the on-off state of the switches, are captured with a hybrid model. This model avoids the use of averaged and approximated models and includes the PWM as well as the sample-and-hold mechanism, commonly used in the industry. Then, another simplified hybrid system, whose trajectories match with the original one, is selected to design the controller and to analyse stability properties. Finally, an estimation of the chattering in steady state of the voltage and current sign…
