1996

This article deals with various means, which could be used by designers in order to estimate error terms in questionnaire tests results, thanks to psychometry. The study must be conceived so as to minimize systematic errors (validity) and random errors (reliability). Methods settled to test the validity of a study are very subjective, even if some of them seem to be more "scientific", being based on the principle of correlation. However the last-mentined don't stand up to some theoretic weakness and other explicit subjective methods should be chosen instead : for instance experts consensus. Methods of reliability evaluation have been developed under strong hypothesis to estimate a reliabilit…

Doing gendered and (dis)embodied work. Care work in the context of medico-managerial welfare state

2013

Whether and how technology-driven managerial reforms affect the field of human service work is a timely question for social sciences. In an increasingly technology-assisted working-life, material conditions such as one’s age and gender may be losing their significance as signifiers of professional identity. Welfare service work is traditionally understood as feminine work that comprises of embodied, situational and social practices of care work. Over the past few decades, public management reforms have called for reassessment of welfare service workers’ occupational skills through practices of medico-managerial service management and occupational accountability. As a result, workers technic…

Modernization and Social Work: Toward Governing Risks, Advanced Liberalism and Crumbling Solidarity?

2016

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts covered in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book discusses how the social work mandate has changed throughout history. It examines the conditions of social work as they relate to social, political and economic tendencies. The book describes how the social work mandate has changed and lays out its economic, political and social boundary conditions in Europe after World War II. It focuses on social work paradigms and theoretical considerations, in other words, phenomenological social work and practice research. The book explores how the fraud debate has its origin in the US, the leading country of neoliberal financial policy and …

A Universal Health Care System? Unmet Need for Medical Care Among Regular and Irregular Immigrants in Italy

2017

Italy has a universal health care system that covers, in principle, the whole resident population, irrespective of citizenship and legal status. This study calculates the prevalence of unmet need for medical care among Italian citizens, regular and irregular immigrants and estimates logistic regression models to assess whether differences by citizenship and legal status hold true once adjusting for potential confounders. The analysis is based on two Surveys on Income and Living Conditions of Italian households and households with foreigners. Controlling for various factors, the odds of experiencing unmet need for medical care are 27% higher for regular immigrants than for Italian citizens a…

Socio-Demographic Vulnerability: The Condition of Italian Young People

2009

For a kind of inertia effect, today the Italian welfare state protects the older too much and, on the contrary, it does not counter sufficiently the new risks associated with other phases of life. Not much seems to be implemented in favour of Italian young people who, as a matter of fact, seem to suffer a lot from the present changes: young people remain longer in the parental home and postpone setting up their own independent life to a most advanced age. In order to understand the situation of vulnerability increasingly widespread among young people, it seemed more and more necessary an in-depth analysis of the reasons and the subjective status of the discomfort that affects young people b…
