Emotions and Technoethics
2020
The relationship between emotions and ethics has been debated for centuries. The act of understanding emotions through the framework of ethics involves accepting that emotions are to some extent culturally dependent. By linking emotions in design to larger ethical discussions, it may be accepted that ethics and design are both technological constructions designed to shape a collective worldview. While both are cultural constructions, they are in constant dialogue with one another through social discourse and individualistic cognitive–affective appraisal processes. This chapter presents an account of technoethics that challenges ideas of ethical values embedded within technology, drawing att…

Technical Education in Jeopardy? Assessing the Interdisciplinary Faculty Structure in a University Merger
2019
AbstractThe social responsibility of universities is to contribute to solving the ‘wicked problems’ facing humanity, including climate change, poverty, conflicts and the lack of energy resources. Interdisciplinarity is an approach that enables solving these problems and helps higher education institutions become more socially responsible while meeting the requirements of their stakeholders. In this chapter, we analyse a multidisciplinary and sector-breaking merger of three higher education institutions in Finland, where the merger is justified by its contribution to solving wicked problems through increased structural interdisciplinarity. We examine the suggested faculty structures and view…
The hyperspectral and smartphone technology in CBRNE countermeasures and defence
2016
Caused by industrial and military use as well as other sources of chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and high-yield explosive (CBRNE) materials, the global threat of weapons of mass destruction (WMDs) remains in spite of such weapons being internationally prohibited. With these materials, industrial and transportation accidents are likely in all countries and can also be triggered by natural disasters, such as in Fukushima in 2011. In addition, governments cannot fully control the manufacturing and usage of WMDs, as extreme terrorists have access to as well as the knowledge and motivation to use such materials. Due to multiple large-scale risks, the countering of CBRNE threats requ…
CCTV-FullyAware: toward end-to-end feasible privacy-enhancing and CCTV forensics applications
2022
It is estimated that over 1 billion Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras are operational worldwide. The advertised main benefits of CCTV cameras have always been the same; physical security, safety, and crime deterrence. The current scale and rate of deployment of CCTV cameras bring additional research and technical challenges for CCTV forensics as well, as for privacy enhancements. This paper presents the first end-to-end system for CCTV forensics and feasible privacy-enhancing applications such as exposure measurement, CCTV route recovery, CCTV-aware routing/navigation, and crowd-sourcing. For this, we developed and evaluated four complex and distinct modules (CCTVCV [1], OSRM-CCTV [2],…
Teknologinen lukutaito Suomen, Ruotsin ja Uuden-Seelannin opetussuunnitelmissa
2014
Computational thinking and acting: An approach for primary school competency development
2020
Computational Thinking has become an important concept for almost all age groups. It describes the purposeful utilization of Information and Communication Technologies for solving problems. The approach of Computational Thinking and Acting combines the computational thinking approach with physical computing, including physical activities to explore real-world problems and tangible outcomes. In this paper, we present a competency framework, design principles, and a sample learning scenario for Computational Thinking and Acting. The evaluation has shown that the approach can be integrated across subjects and is promising for both teachers and pupils. peerReviewed
Lifelong learning : Formal, non-formal and informal learning in the context of the use of problem-solving skills in technology rich environments
2019
The evolving technological landscape in the digital era has a crucial influence on lifelong learning and the demand for problem‐solving skills. In this paper, we identify associations between formal, non‐formal and informal learning with sufficient problem‐solving skills in technology‐rich environments (TRE). We focus on adults' problem‐solving skills in TRE as a novel approach to investigate formal, non‐formal and informal learning based on data from the Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies. This programme measured 16–64‐year‐old adults' proficiency in problem‐solving skills in TRE. The total sample size was 61 654 individuals from 13 European countries. Our res…
