Ultraviolet cues in fruit-frugivore interactions

All diurnal birds studied so far, many reptiles, amphibians, fish and some rodents are able to detect near-ultraviolet light (UV; 320-400 nm) invisible to humans. In many animals, UV cues have been found to play a role in foraging and mate choice. As many fruits reflect UV light, frugivores sensitive to UV may also use these cues in foraging. Fruit colours and their contrast with background coloration may attract frugivores. In this thesis, I studied the fruit colour preferences of both redwings (Turdus iliacus) and small rodents (house mice, Mus musculus and bank vole, Clethrionomys glareolus).

Wage Effects of Firm Size : Evidence from Linked Employer-Employee Panel

This study explores the relationship between wages and firm size using large registered data and different identification strategies. We found that the effect of firm size on wages is negligible when worker and firm characteristics are accounted for. The findings are robust across identification strategies and numerous covariates. The findings are also consistent with the view that coordinated wage-setting systems narrow wage distributions. peerReviewed

Lajintuntemuksella on myös merkitys osana laajempaa luonnontuntemusta, sillä esimerkiksi ekosysteemien rakenteen ja toiminnan ymmärtäminen ilman lajintuntemusta olisi hankalaa. Lajintuntemustaitojen on todettu heikentyneen luonnontieteiden korkeakouluopiskelijoilla, minkä lisäksi lajintuntemuksen opiskelu korkeakouluissa on todettu yllättävän vaikeaksi.
