Tracking the Finnish social and health care reform : issue arena analysis in a major online news medium
2015
Tutkimuksen tarkoitus on monitoroida Sote-uudistukseen liittyvää keskustelua hs.fi online-sanomalehdessä. Online-uutisa…
Sisävesien mikrotonnisto : pienet höyrylaivat Suomen ja erityisesti Kainuun sisävesiliikenteessä 1870-luvulta 1960-luvulle
2016
The significance in Finland of shipping on inland waterways has been great. This is due to the topography of the country with its many lakes and to the fact that the vast waterways in their natural state were easily navigable. The construction of canals resulted in even more extensive interconnected inland waterways. This study explores the tasks of the steamships plying these internal waterways, their numbers and significance, and also changes and the reasons for these between different inland waterways, as regards different types of vessels and shipowners in the period from the 1870s to the 1960s. Special attention is paid to steamships smaller than 19 net register tons. This limit was ch…
Exercise as stimulus for cartilage health in knee osteoarthritis
2018
Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a leading cause of musculoskeletal pain and disability and has significant socio-economical costs globally. There is no known cure for OA. Therapeutic exercise has been shown to evoke acute positive posttreatment effects on pain and function. Even though cartilage degeneration is crucial in OA progression, there is sparse knowledge about exercise effects on osteoarthritic cartilage. The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy of aquatic resistance training on the estimated biochemical composition of tibiofemoral cartilage and the association between leisure time physical activity (LTPA) and tibiofemoral cartilage in postmenopausal women with mild kn…

Advances in Wine Fermentation
2021
Fermentation is a well-known natural process that has been used by humanity for thousands of years, with the fundamental purpose of making alcoholic beverages such as wine, and also other non-alcoholic products. From a strictly biochemical point of view, fermentation is a process of central metabolism in which an organism converts a carbohydrate, such as starch or sugar, into an alcohol or an acid. The fermentation process turns grape juice (must) into wine. This is a complex chemical reaction whereby the yeast interacts with the sugars (glucose and fructose) in the must to create ethanol and carbon dioxide. Fermentation processes to produce wines are traditionally carried out with Saccharo…
Oppdragelsessyn i endring? : En komparativ studie av populære oppdragelsesbøker utgitt i Norge i perioden 1950-2000
2017
Masteroppgave pedagogikk PED511 - Universitetet i Agder 2017 The topic of this assignment is to study if the view of parenting has changed in Norway. There have been many discussions about parenting and what it entails. This study is limited to popular books that have been released in Norway between 1950 and 2000. The parenting books emphasise different aspects in the children’s upbringing and how that positively affects their development. The primary research question is to examine the views of parenting and its development from four books from the selected period: “Barneoppdragelse” by Lise Østlyngen (1950), “Barn og foreldre: barneoppdragelse i praksis” by Hambro & Moa (1966), “Elsker du…
L'Ecuba euripidea: dramma della violenza sugli inermi
2010
This paper focuses on ‘violence on unarmed people’ as the unifying theme that underlies the structure of the tragedy with an anthropopoietic function, what means to build up, by contrast, models of human and humanity.. All the three forms of violence against unarmed people, which can be singled out in the tragedy, are analyzed. The first is the sacred violence of Polyxena’s sacrifice, which is represented as an unnecessary and avoidable killing, due to the excessive power of the winners Greeks on losers barbarians. The second is the criminal violence upon Polydorus, motivated by greed for gold but also due to the impunity in a destructive war. The third is the ‘maenadic’ violence by which H…
Vaginal infection of mice with HSV type 2 variant ER−: A new animal model for human primary genital HSV type 2 infections
1992
Abstract Studying the pathogenesis of vaginal infections in mice with two variants of Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) strain ER we observed that both variants ER+ and ER− caused severe vaginitis but only ER+ invaded the CNS leading to lethal neurological disease. In contrast, mice infected with ER− cleared the virus from the vagina and recovered from infection. ER+ and ER− expressed equal levels of thymidine kinase (TK) indicating a TK-independent difference in neurovirulence. Using the non-neurovirulent variant ER−, we were able to investigate humoral immune responses late after infection. Vaginal infection with ER− suppressed serum antibody formation after a secondary systemic HSV-1 i…
Mouse models of cytomegalovirus latency: overview.
2002
Abstract Background: The molecular regulation of viral latency and reactivation is a central unsolved issue in the understanding of cytomegalovirus (CMV) biology. Like human CMV (hCMV), murine CMV (mCMV) can establish a latent infection in cells of the myeloid lineage. Since mCMV genome remains present in various organs after its clearance from hematopoietic cells first in bone marrow and much later in blood, there must exist one or more widely distributed cell type(s) representing the cellular site(s) of enduring mCMV latency in host tissues. Endothelial cells and histiocytes are candidates, but the question is not yet settled. Another long debated problem appears to be solved: mCMV establ…
