Background Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is an extremely aggressive malignancy, characterized by largely unsatisfactory responses to the currently available therapeutic strategies. In this study we evaluated the expression of genes involved in gemcitabine uptake in a selected cohort of patients with PDAC, with well-defined clinical-pathological features. SBA in the United States increased from 5.7 cases per million in 1973 to 7.3 cases per million in 2004 (Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results (SEER), 1973–2004 database; Jemal et al (2009). Surgery is the mainstay of treatment, even if chemotherapy in advanced disease has been associated with an increased survival. This trial assessed efficacy and safety of the triple combination gemcitabine–oxaliplatin and infusional 5-FU in patients with locally advanced (n = 11) or metastatic (n = 32) pancreatic adenocarcinoma.
