Exploring relationships between audio features and emotion in music
2009
In this paper, we present an analysis of the associations between emotion categories and audio features automatically extracted from raw audio data. This work is based on 110 excerpts from film soundtracks evaluated by 116 listeners. This data is annotated with 5 basic emotions (fear, anger, happiness, sadness, tenderness) on a 7 points scale. Exploiting state-of-the-art Music Information Retrieval (MIR) techniques, we extract audio features of different kind: timbral, rhythmic and tonal. Among others we also compute estimations of dissonance, mode, onset rate and loudness. We study statistical relations between audio descriptors and emotion categories confirming results from psychological …
First impression misleads emotion recognition
2019
Recognition of others' emotions is a key life ability that guides one's own choices and behavior, and it hinges on the recognition of others' facial cues. Independent studies indicate that facial appearance-based evaluations affect social behavior, but little is known about how facial appearance-based trustworthiness evaluations influence the recognition of specific emotions. We tested the hypothesis that first impressions based on facial appearance affect the recognition of basic emotions. A total of 150 participants completed a dynamic emotion recognition task. In a within-subjects design, the participants viewed videos of individuals with trustworthy-looking, neutral, or untrustworthy-lo…
Il corpo delle emozioni. Una prospettiva antica sull’intreccio tra menti, corpi e parole
2022
In this paper we propose a reflection on the intertwining of mind, body, and words in ancient Greek thought, with specific reference to Gorgias and Aristotle. In particular, we believe that it was the reflection developed within rhetoric – though not the only one – that played a central role in the first articulation of the conceptual framework where the relationship between soul and body, in a very peculiar and specific way, takes place. There are at least two salient features of this rhetorical perspective, which will be investigated here with specific reference, as mentioned, to Gorgias and Aristotle: the insistence on the close interrelationship between body and soul, an interrelationsh…

Stars or constellations?: implications of cognitive studies for the dimensional model of emotion
2016
Sing with the Telenoid
2012
We introduce a novel research proposal project aimed to build a robotic setup in which the Telenoid learns to improvise jazz singing in a duet with a human singer. In the proposed application, the Telenoid acts in teleoperated mode during the learning phase, while it becomes more and more autonomous during the working phase. A goal of the research is to investigate the essence of human communication which is based on gestures and prosody. We will employ an architecture for imitation learning that incrementally learns from demonstrations sequences of internal model activations, based on the idea of coupled forward- inverse internal models for representing musical phrases and the body sequenc…
Bodies, emotions and tourism: a study of Costa Cruises commercials
2013
Nowadays, tourism industry proposes different opportunities to live a vacation where the body is the main interest and the central focus of experience. Each form of tourism shows a particular universe of representation of the body and a corresponding emotional language. In this context, where bodies and spaces are associated and reciprocally constructed as symbolic languages for the benefit of the tourist’s extraordinary experience, cruise tourism is an interesting case in point to analyze above all because on cruises, people use the space of the ship in different ways and, at the same time, following general corporeal and spatial schemes. These uses and schemes reflect a particular concept…
Il "sistema 0-6" e la cura educativa del corpo. In dialogo con Maurice Merleau-Ponty
2019
One of the major innovations introduced by Legislative Decree 65/2017 is the affirmation of the basic but not obvious principle that specific professional skills are necessary to scientifically qualify educational interventions in different areas of personal and community services. From this statement follows the recognition of the need for university qualification for childcare services. The value of such an acknowledgment is captured in all its depth if placed in the presence of the age-old social and political devaluation, which has often become invisibility, of care work. Pedagogical reflection, in particular, has long highlighted how there can be no real education without attentive lis…
Emotions in a cognitive architecture for human robot interactions
2004
A robot architecture is proposed in which cognitive models of emotions are modelled in terms of conceptual spaces. The architecture has been implemented in a anthropomorphic robotic hand system. Experimental results are described related to an experimental setup in which the robot system plays Rock Paper Scissor against a human opponent Copyright © 2004, American Association for Artificial Intelligence (www.aaai.org).
Boosting Hankel matrices for face emotion recognition and pain detection
2017
HighligthsDynamics of face expression descriptors are modeled for emotion recognition.A set of Hankel matrices is built upon several multi-scale face representations.Boosting and random subspace projection are used for dynamics selection.Dynamics of Haar-like features and Gabor Energies are compared.Fine-grained dynamics of subtle expressions can be modeled at small spatial scales. Studies in psychology have shown that the dynamics of emotional expressions play an important role in face emotion recognition in humans. Motivated by these studies, in this paper the dynamics of face expressions are modeled and used for automatic emotion recognition and pain detection.Given a temporal sequence o…
