Disparities in nutritional adequacy of diets between different socioeconomic groups of Finnish adults

2022

Information on dietary adequacy is needed to assess food and nutrition security in a modern society, especially in the transition towards climate-friendly food systems. In this study, differences in the nutritional adequacy of diets among Finnish adults were evaluated in population groups of different education, income and urbanisation levels. The study used data from the FinDiet 2017 Survey (n = 1655, 18–74 years). Modelled usual intakes of foods and nutrients were evaluated relative to food-based dietary guidelines issued by the National Nutrition Council of Finland (FNNC) and with respect to nutrient adequacy following the Nordic Nutrition Recommendations and FNNC. For about half of the …

The internal calcar septum and its contact with the virtual stem in THR: a computer tomographic evaluation.

2003

The internal calcar septum is a ridge of cortical bone protruding from the inner cortical wall of the proximal femur into the medullary canal. It extends from the lesser trochanter into the femoral neck and narrows the femoral cavity in its dorsal third. This region is essential for THR stability, but the degree of contact between the septum and standard THR implants has never been studied. We obtained CT scans of 50 arthrotic hip joints from patients requiring THR. Virtual stems (50 straight/wedge-shaped and 50 anatomic stems) were placed in CT images of the femora using a PC-based preoperative planning unit. The dimensions of the septum, degree and location of contact between the septum a…

Capsular bag shrinkage after implantation of a capsular bending or capsular tension ring.

2005

To evaluate the influence of a capsular bending ring (CBR) or tension ring (CTR) on capsular bag shrinkage.Department of Ophthalmology, Johannes Gutenberg-University, and Department of Medical Biometry, Epidemiology and Informatics, University of Mainz, Mainz, Germany. In 92 eyes of 92 patients, a capsular measuring ring (CMR) was implanted after phacoemulsification to measure capsular bag size in vivo. Patients were randomized into 3 groups: The first received a CMR and CBR, the second received a CMR and CTR, and the third received a CMR alone. Measurements were performed preoperatively, intraoperatively, during the first 3 postoperative days, and after 1 and 3 months. Preoperative biometri…

Targeted Hybrid Nanocarriers as a System Enhancing the Skin Structure

2021

The skin is constantly exposed to external and internal factors that disturb its function. In this work, two nanosystems-levan nanoparticles and a surfactin-stabilized nanoemulsion were preserved (tested for microbial growth) and characterized (size, polydispersity, Zeta potential, and stability). The nanosystems were introduced in the model formulations-cream, tonic, and gel, and confirmed by TEM. The analysis showed that nanoemulsion has a spherical morphology and size 220–300 nm, while levan nanoparticles had irregular shapes independently of the use of matrix and with particle size (130–260 nm). Additionally, we examined the antiradical effect of levan nanoparticles and nanoemulsion in …

ustione corneale durante intervento di facoemulsificazione: contributo casistico e considerazioni medico-legali

2014

[Corneal burn during phacoemulsification surgery: case report and medico-legal considerations] The authors report a case of severe corneal burn, occured a few seconds later the beginning of the surgical procedure of phacoemulsification on a 63 years old woman affected by cataract. The authors analyzed the case as a result of claims for damage to the surgeons and the hospital by the patient. In terms of assessment of responsibility, medico-legal investigation is aimed at identifying whether the responsibility of the event of damage to the patient is to be attributed to the negligent conduct of the surgeon or to defects or damage to the equipment used by the same. The authors underline the im…

Everyday life and the new shapes of identities : The different meanings of ‘things that did not happen’ in the lives of Finnish older persons during …

2021

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected our lives in many ways since the end of 2019. This paper investigates the everyday lives of Finnish older persons during the first three months of the pandemic when they were required to stay in “quarantine-like conditions.” The study utilises the ‘sociology of nothing’ in exploring the meanings of nothingness in the everyday lives of older people; that is, the things, events and people that were absent from their lives because of the pandemic. The main interest of the article is to reverse the typical analytical focus from ‘things that happened’ to ‘things that did not happen’ and to shed light on the experiences and descriptions of older persons' unlived…

Spaniards’ Secular Ritual

2015

Football is the most popular sport in Spain, and its strong attraction is clearly reflected in its economic dimensions. Recent estimations of the economic influence of Spanish football concluded that it had an effect on production of some €4,000,000,000, almost one per cent of the general Gross National Product (GNP) and about 1.2 per cent of the GNP of the services sector (LFP, 2004). Adding in other indirect effects, such as employee remuneration and the gross operating surplus, the total impact of Spanish football on the Spanish economy climbs to €8,066,000,000, approximately 1.7 per cent of the overall GNP and 2.5 per cent of the GNP of the services sector, and it provides direct or ind…

Mass action model for solute distribution between water and micelles. Partial molar volumes of butanol and pentanol in dodecyl surfactant solutions

1986

The densities of 1-butanol and 1-pentanol were measured in aqueous solutions of dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide and dodecyldimethylamine oxide and the partial molar volumes at infinite dilution of the alcohols in aqueous surfactants solutions were obtained. The observed trends of this quantity as a function of the surfactant concentration were rationalized using a mass-action model for the alcohol distribution between the aqueous and the micellar phase. At the same time, the model was revised to account for the alcohol effect on the surfactant micellization equilibrium. The partial molar volume of alcohols in the aqueous and in the micellar phases and the ratios between the binding constan…

Calorimetric investigation of water/lecithin/cyclohexane microemulsions

1997

The enthalpies of dilution of water/lecithin/cyclohexane microemulsion-gels at variousR values (R=[water]/[lecithin]) and molar enthalpies of solution of water in lecithin/cyclohexane at a fixed lecithin concentration were determined calorimetrically at 25°C. Through a description of the process of dilution of water/lecithin/cyclohexane microemulsion-gels as one involving mainly the scission of lecithin reversed micelles in to smaller ones, the concentration dependence of the enthalpy was rationalized. Surprisingly, in order to account for the dilution enthalpies, it was not necessary to hypothesize a thermal effect arising from the breakage of the micellar network present in the micremulsi…
