Refractive lens exchange with Acri.LISA bifocal intraocular lens implantation.

2011

PURPOSE To assess efficacy, safety, and predictability after refractive lens exchange (RLE) in patients who had bilateral implantation of an Acri.LISA 366D diffractive bifocal intraocular lens (IOL). METHODS Sixty-six eyes of 33 consecutive patients were examined after RLE who had bilateral implantation of an Acri.LISA bifocal 366D IOL. Eyes were divided into myopic and hyperopic groups. Monocular uncorrected distance visual acuity, best-corrected distance visual acuity (BCVA), uncorrected distance near visual acuity, and best distance-corrected near visual acuity (BCNVA) were recorded preoperatively and 6 months after surgery. RESULTS Efficacy indexes were 0.73 for myopic and 0.85 for hype…

Vitamin D Intake and Magnetic Resonance Parameters for Knee Osteoarthritis: Data from the Osteoarthritis Initiative

2018

Purpose: There is evidence that vitamin D may play a role in the osteoarthritis (OA) pathogenesis, but the few data available are limited to X-rays and clinical findings. The aim of this study was to investigate whether a higher intake of vitamin D was associated with a better architecture of the cartilage of the knee, assessed with magnetic resonance (MRI), in a large cohort from North America. Methods: 783 participants (59.8% females; mean age: 62.3 years) with an MRI assessment from the Osteoarthritis Initiative were included. Vitamin D dietary intake was calculated as the sum of food and oral supplementation. A coronal 3D FLASH with Water Excitation MR sequence of the right knees was us…

Sulcus implantation of a single-piece foldable acrylic intraocular lens after posterior capsular rupture in cataract surgery.

2012

Purpose. To evaluate the safety of a foldable acrylic single-piece intraocular lens (IOL) in cases of complicated cataract surgery and sulcus implantation. The setting was University and private anterior segment surgery practices. Methods. In this observational case series study, 13 eyes of 13 patients were included after complicated phacoemulsification with extensive posterior capsule rupture with or without vitreous loss. A foldable acrylic single-piece IOL (Rayner Superflex 620H; Rayner Intraocular Lenses Limited, Hove, East Sussex, UK) was implanted in the ciliary sulcus in each eye. Postoperative follow-up included best-corrected visual acuity, anterior segment biomicroscopy, IOL centr…

Deep sclerectomy versus punch trabeculectomy with or without phacoemulsification: a randomized clinical trial.

2004

Purpose: To compare the efficacy of non-penetrating deep sclerectomy without implant with Crozafon-De Laage punch trabeculectomy, and to evaluate the effect of simultaneous temporal approach phacoemulsification on both techniques. Patients and Methods: Setting: Department of Ophthalmology of the University of Palermo. Design: Prospective randomized clinical trial. Patients and intervention procedures: Sixty-five patients (65 eyes) with primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) or pseudoexfoliative glaucoma (PEXG): 32 eyes underwent non-penetrating deep sclerectomy (NPDS), 17 as single procedure and 15 combined with phacoemulsification (phaco- NPDS), and 33 eyes underwent punch trabeculectomy (PT),…

Contrast sensitivity after implantation of a spherical versus an aspherical intraocular lens in biaxial microincision cataract surgery.

2007

Purpose To determine whether implantation of a microincision intraocular lens (IOL) with a modified anterior surface, designed to compensate for the positive spherical aberration of the cornea in eyes of cataract patients, results in improved pseudophakic quality of vision in pseudophakic eyes after biaxial microincision phacoemulsification. Setting Department of Ophthalmology, Johannes Gutenberg-University, Mainz, Germany. Methods In a nonrandomized parallel cohort investigation, the visual performance of 52 eyes of 52 patients unilaterally implanted with the aspherical Acri.Smart 36 A IOL (Acri.Tec) were compared with those of 25 eyes of 25 age-matched patients unilaterally implanted with…

Food deprivation decreases the exertion-induced acid hydrolase response in mouse skeletal muscle

1988

Strenuous prolonged running causes muscle fibre necrosis in skeletal muscles. The muscle injury is associated with inflammation and a strong increase in the total activities of certain acid hydrolases a few days after exertion. The activity changes of acid hydrolases quantitatively well reflect the severity of histopathological changes during the myopathy (for review see Salminen, Acta Physiol Scand [Suppl 539] 1985). In this study male NMRI-mice were exposed to a protocol of fasting and refeeding together with or without a 6 h run on a treadmill at 13.5 m.min-1. The animals were killed 4 days after the exercise and samples from the red part of quadriceps femoris were analyzed for arylsulfa…

Prophylaxis of Pseudophakic Cystoid Macular Edema with Intraoperative Pegaptanib

2011

The purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy of an intraoperative intravitreal pegaptanib injection during phacoemulsification in preventing the development of pseudophakic cystoid macular edema (CME) following cataract surgery. This prospective, controlled pilot study was carried out at the Department of Ophthalmology, Nuevo Hospital Universitario y Politécnico La Fe, Valencia (Spain). Five hundred patients with cataract and healthy retina were included in the study. Patients were assigned in a 1:1 ratio to receive an intraoperative intravitreal pegaptanib injection (n=250) or not (control group, n=250) associated with standardized phacoemulsification surgery and postoperative tr…

Optical and visual performance of diffractive intraocular lens implantation after myopic laser in situ keratomileusis

2008

To evaluate the optical and visual quality in eyes with diffractive intraocular lenses (IOLs) after myopic laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK).Fernández-Vega Ophthalmological Institute, Oviedo, Spain. The best corrected visual acuity (BCVA [distance]) at 12.5%, 25.0%, and 100% contrasts under photopic and mesopic conditions; best distance-corrected near acuity; corneal total higher-order aberrations (HOAs); and optical quality by modulation transfer function (MTF) were measured after myopic LASIK in eyes with a spherical AcrySof ReSTOR SN60D3 IOL or an aspheric Acri.LISA 366D IOL and phakic eyes (control).Under photopic conditions at 100% contrast, the BCVA was 0.1 logMAR or better in all g…
