Calorimetric investigation of the formation of ZnS nanoparticles in w/o microemulsions

1998

The enthalpies of precipitation of ZnS nanoparticles within water containing reversed micelles of sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) solfosuccinate, L-α phosphatidylcholine, tetraethyleneglycol-mono-n-dodecyl ether and didodecyldimethylammonium bromide as a function of the molar concentration ratioR (R=[water]/[surfactant]) were measured by calorimetric technique. The results indicate that the energetic state of ZnS nanoparticles confined in the aqueous core of the reversed micelles is different from that in bulk water. Effects due to nanoparticle size, adsorption of HS− ions on the nanoparticle surface and interactions between nanoparticles and water/surfactant interfaces are discussed.

ALTMET Polymerization of Amino Acid-Based Monomers Targeting Controlled Drug Release

2016

Giving the imminent necessity of a new generation of biodegradable and biocompatible polymers prepared from feedstock, the synthesis of a potentially biodegradable amino acid-based copolymer by the alternating diene metathesis (ALTMET) strategy is herein presented. The reaction was tailored to minimize isomerization and deactivation of ruthenium catalysts by intramolecular coordination with the amide carbonyl group of the amino-acid-based monomer. Alternated l-lysine–phosphoester copolymers with molar masses higher than 18 000 g/mol were obtained using Hoveyda–Grubbs second-generation and Umicore M2 catalysts. The copolymer was further used to prepare nanoparticles loaded with rifampicin (u…

A pH-triggered bistable copper(II) metallacycle as a reversible emulsion switch for biphasic processes.

2013

A unique bistable copper-metallacyclic complex is used as an elegant molecular switch for the reversible formation of emulsions by simple pH variation. This switch may have several exciting applications in biphasic processes such as catalysis and separation science technologies.

Emulsion-based synthesis of PLGA-microspheres for the in vitro expansion of porcine chondrocytes.

2007

Abstract The in vitro cell expansion of autologous chondrocytes is of high interest in regenerative medicine since these cells can be used to treat joint cartilage defects. In order to preserve chondrocyte phenotype, while optimizing adhesion on microspheres, several processing parameters for the microsphere synthesis were varied. In this study three different polylactide-co-glycolides were used with differing lactide–glycolide ratios (85:15 and 50:50) and differing inherent viscosities. An emulsion route was established, where the polymer was dissolved in chloroform and then injected into a stirred polyvinyl alcohol–water solution at different polymer concentrations and different stirring …

Functional adaptations in the craniofacial morphology of Malagasy primates: shape variations associated with gummivory in the family Cheirogaleidae.

2005

Summary The infraorder Lemuriformes is characterized by a high level of homoplasy that clouds the evolutionary signal. The analysis of the morphological disparity of the Malagasy primates' crania and mandibles demonstrates the high determinism of functional specializations and developmental constraints, regardless of the phylogeny. In the present work, the weight of functional constraints linked to diet — a putative source of homoplasy — is analyzed first at the level of the infraorder Lemuriformes as a whole, and secondly at the level of a single family, the Cheirogaleidae, chosen because it contains taxa with two different diets (omnivory and gummivory). Malagasy primates are characterize…

Morphometrics of the wood mouse (Apodemus sylvaticus, Mammalia, Rodentia) in the Mediterranean

1995

Abstract Sexual dimorphism, ontogenetic variation and allometric shape changes related to variation in size were considered and eliminated before performing discriminant analyses on geographic variation of Apodemus sylvaticus in central Mediterranean areas. Preliminary multivariate analyses of A. sylvaticus populations showed influences of sex and age in the ordination results. Giantism, i.e. size increase and shape‐related change, was more pronounced on islands like Pantelleria and Marettimo. By principal component analysis, we found an allometric factor which proved statistically correlated to insularity parameters (area, distance from mainland, and altitude) but not to the number of pred…

A randomized controlled trial for response of microbiome network to exercise and diet intervention in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease

2021

AbstractExercise and diet are treatments for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and prediabetes, however, how exercise and diet interventions impact gut microbiota in patients is incompletely understood. We previously reported a 8.6-month, four-arm (Aerobic exercise, n = 29; Diet, n = 28; Aerobic exercise + Diet, n = 29; No intervention, n = 29) randomized, singe blinded (for researchers), and controlled intervention in patients with NAFLD and prediabetes to assess the effect of interventions on the primary outcomes of liver fat content and glucose metabolism. Here we report the third primary outcome of the trial—gut microbiota composition—in participants who completed the trial (22 i…
