Knowledge sharing and subsidiary R&D mandate development: A matter of dual embeddedness
2014
Sharing knowledge across borders has proven to be especially relevant to multinational corporations (MNCs). Foreign subsidiaries have become active players in these knowledge flows. However, the network effects of interacting with multiple agents on the evolution of the R&D role played by subsidiaries are still undeveloped. The present study focuses on changes in subsidiary capabilities and on the dynamic mechanisms by which their R&D role might evolve, especially, as a consequence of their interaction with a variety of knowledge networks. We examine this issue by conducting four longitudinal case studies of subsidiaries operating in Spain. Using an inductive approach to theory building, we…
The influence of geographical concentration and structural characteristics on the survival chance of textile firms
2013
[EN] Purpose The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the contribution of location (geographical concentration) and firm structure (age and subsector) to the risk of business failure. Design/methodology/approach The Markov s regression analysis was made for a sample of over 11,700 Spanish textile-clothing firms. Findings The results obtained from the analysis suggest that the risk of business failure is increased by some risk factors relative to the structural characteristics of the firms (younger firms and specialization in low-tech activities), and under determined locational circumstances. Research limitations/implications Our conclusions have been obtained starting from a sample of manu…
Due Diligence Matrix for Main User Groups of Financial Analysis
2014
Abstract Today the financial analysis indicators of an enterprise are topical for both internal and external users of an enterprise. Unfortunately, often to analyze the financial status of an enterprise and to identify the potential of an enterprise, it is not enough to have customary financial analysis indicators. In this paper, the data of the research that was conducted by the end of the year 2013 has been used. 1935 respondents took part in the survey – representatives of the leading business sectors in Latvia and representatives of the large and medium-sized enterprises. In the research, the authors have applied quantitative and qualitative methods of economics such as the mathematical…
The Monitoring and Advisory Functions of Corporate Boards
2018
The main objective of this chapter is to investigate the effects of advisory directors’ presence on the board’s overall effectiveness in value creation. To achieve this purpose, we first explore the channels through which this advisory measure influences firm value. Thus, the results suggest that the presence of at least one independent director principally committed to advising duties on the board leads to an increase in corporate innovation and a better acquisition performance. We then examine the effect of this measure on firm value. Our findings highlight that the presence of advisory directors on the board is associated with a significant increase in firm value, especially for highly i…
Imbalance of Power: Social Service Entrepreneurss Experiences of Entrepreneur-Municipality Relationship
2014
We investigate the complex dynamics between social service entrepreneurs and social sector managers through the lens of network metaphor, utilizing our data on social service entrepreneurs’ experiences of cooperation with municipalities. We examine what kinds of dependencies exist in the entrepreneur–municipality relationships and what kind of consequences these dependencies have on social service businesses run by entrepreneurs. Basing on the social service entrepreneurs experience, our findings suggest that while the cooperation with the municipality represents a prerequisite for success, their business represent only one alternative for the renewal of social service structures from the p…
Capability-based Communication Analysis for Enterprise Modelling
2018
Capability-oriented enterprise modelling can provide effective solutions to face changing business context. In the business domain, the notion of capability has gained a lot of attention since it guides the activities of service specification and design. Simultaneously, the research community has been promoting the integration of model-driven development (MDD) approaches with enterprise modelling to support the link between enterprise and software specifications. This integration has becoming vital to ensure the traceability of enterprise models and software implementations, acceleration of software time to market, quality assurance, and enterprise model evolution support. The capability-dr…
Mijiedarbība inovācijā mazajos un vidējos uzņēmumos meža nozarē Latvijā
2013
Disentangling Tax Evasion from Inefficiency in Firms Tax Declaration: An Integrated Approach
2019
In this article we present a new methodology to support fiscal monitoring by the Italian Revenue Agency (IRA) with the aim of improving current taxpayers fiscal compliance and fighting tax evasion within small and medium enterprises. In fact, given the methodology behind the Sector Studies (Studi di Settore - SdS) system, there is room for firms to implement tax evasion strategies by simply adjusting revenues (and costs) toward an estimated average threshold (known ex-ante), the so called "presumptive" revenues, and achieving the fiscal "congruity" status. By estimating a production function through stochastic frontier analysis we avoid estimating the average threshold know ex-ante and can …
Formal Modeling and Discrete-Time Analysis of BPEL Web Services
2008
International audience; Web services are increasingly used for building enterprise information systems according to the Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) paradigm. We propose in this paper a tool-equipped methodology allowing the formal modeling and analysis of Web services described in the BPEL language. The discrete-time transition systems modeling the behavior of BPEL descriptions are obtained by an exhaustive simulation based on a formalization of BPEL semantics using the Algebra of Timed Processes (ATP). These models are then analyzed by model checking value-based temporal logic properties using the CADP toolbox. The approach is illustrated with the design of a Web service for GPS na…
Learning from foreign operation modes: The virtuous path for innovation
2020
In this article, we analyze the impact of learning from internationalization on small and medium enterprises’ (SMEs) performance along different development paths. Drawing on the exploitation versus exploration logic, we use an alternative view of foreign operation modes (the learning perspective) to provide insights into the impact of such learning on technological and organizational innovation as well as overall performance. Our results, which are derived from a sample of 132 SMEs active in traditional manufacturing industries, point to a path to superior performance that entails resource-augmenting operation modes and organizational innovation. JEL CLASSIFICATION: O31; F23; L25; M10; M1…
