Perilipin polymorphism interacts with saturated fat and carbohydrates to modulate insulin resistance

2010

Macronutrient intakes and genetic variants have been shown to interact to alter the risk of insulin resistance, but replication of gene-nutrient interactions across independent populations may be difficult to achieve. Saturated fat and carbohydrate were previously shown to interact with genotype for insulin resistance for a variant of perilipin (PLIN), the major adipocyte-associated protein and a regulator of adipocyte metabolism. We investigated the same interaction for PLIN 11482G>A (rs894160) on insulin resistance in US men(n=462) and women(n=508) (mean ±SD, 49±16 years). In multivariate linear regression models, we found a significant (PA for HOMA-IR (homeostasis model assessment of ins…

Early neutralizing and glycoprotein B (gB)-specific antibody responses to human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) in immunocompetent individuals with distinct c…

2000

Abstract Background: Antibodies with functional anti-Human Cytomegalovirus (HCMV) activity are likely to be involved in preventing virus dissemination and thus may contribute to minimize the clinical manifestations of infection. Objectives: To investigate the role of humoral immunity in modulating the clinical expression of primary Human Cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infection in immunocompetent persons. Study design: Neutralizing (NA) and glycoprotein B (gB)-specific antibodies were quantitated in acute-phase and late-convalescence phase sera from 19 individuals who developed either HCMV mononucleosis (12) or oligosymptomatic hepatitis (seven). Results: The levels of NA in sera drawn early after …

Three-dimensional distribution of trabecular bone density and cortical thickness in the distal humerus

2008

One major barrier to osteosynthesis in distal humeral fractures is poor bone quality. This study was an attempt to measure the bone quality in the distal humerus. We measured the distribution of total bone mineral density (BMD), trabecular BMD (tBMD), and cortical thickness (CTh) in the distal humerus using peripheral quantitive computed tomography. Four slices in the infracondylar, supracondylar, and distal disphyseal regions of 25 human cadaver humeri were investigated.Total BMD decreased continuously from the distal diaphysis to the trochlea. Within the infracondylar region, the capitellum was the region of lowest tBMD and CTh (P.001). Measurements in anterior regions were higher than in …

P-POSSUM score: a prognostic instrument for postoperative complications in Crohn's disease

2018

The purpose of this work is to demonstrate the correlation between the p-POSSUM score and the severity of Crohn's Disease (CD) postoperative complications, evaluated by using the Clavien-Dindo score. We have selected data of 22 patients (11 males, 11 females) that had been recovered in the Operative Unit of General Surgery of the University of Palermo General Hospital and undergone surgery for CD from 2010 to 2017.Patients who underwent surgery for complicated CD was divided in three different group on the base of Clavien Dindo score, C1 (Clavien-Dindo ≤ 1), C2 (Clavien Dindo = 2), and C3 (Clavien Dindo ≥ 3). ANOVA one way statistic analysis was used to investigate the presence of statistic …

Impact of Corneoscleral Contact Lens Usage on Corneal Biomechanical Parameters in Keratoconic Eyes

2019

Objective To analyze the changes in corneal biomechanical parameters of keratoconic eyes with and without intracorneal ring segment (ICRS) implants after 1 year of corneoscleral contact lens (CScL) wear. Methods Seventy-four eyes of 74 patients were divided into three groups: healthy subjects (29 eyes, control group), and 2 groups of subjects with keratoconic eyes (one group of 20 eyes with ICRS implants and one of 25 eyes without them), which were fitted with CScL. Corneal hysteresis (CH), corneal resistance factor (CRF), and corneal-compensated intraocular pressure (IOPcc) were evaluated before fitting CScL and after 1 year of CScL wear. In addition, endothelial cell count (ECC) and centr…

Uncommon clinical presentation of Kimura’s disease as bilateral retroauricular masses in a young Malian male: successful surgical approach.

2016

We present a case of a 27 year-old Malian male referred to our hospital for two large, painless retroauricolar masses that had appeared two years earlier. Bilateral cervical painless lymphadenopathy was present at physical examination, without any other systemic symptoms. His history was relevant for bilateral Kimura’s disease lesions resected 5 years earlier in the same locations. Lymphocytosis and a mild hypereosinophilia were found in routine blood tests, together with increased total IgE levels. After surgery, histology showed lymphoid infiltrates with reactive prominent germinal centres containing eosinophils, suggesting relapse of Kimura’s disease, in the context of nonencapsulated fi…

Abnormal facilitatory mechanisms in motor cortex of migraine with aura

2010

Experimental evidence suggests impairment of inhibitory intracortical circuits in migraine, while not much is known about activity of facilitatory intracortical circuits. In the present work we evaluated the effects of high frequency-repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (hf-rTMS) on the activity of facilitatory circuits of motor cortex in 18 patients affected by migraine with aura and 18 healthy subjects. Trains of 10 stimuli were applied to the motor cortex at 5-Hz frequency with recording of the EMG traces from the contralateral abductor pollicis brevis muscle (APB). Two intensities of stimulation (110% and 130% of resting motor threshold) were used in order to explore whether mot…

Reduced Threshold for Inhibitory Homeostatic Responses in Migraine Motor Cortex? A tDCS/TMS Study

2014

Background and Objective Neurophysiological studies in migraine have reported conflicting findings of either cortical hyper- or hypoexcitability. In migraine with aura (MwA) patients, we recently documented an inhibitory response to suprathreshold, high-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (hf-rTMS) trains applied to the primary motor cortex, which is in contrast with the facilitatory response observed in the healthy subjects. The aim of the present study was to support the hypothesis that in migraine, because of a condition of basal increased cortical responsivity, inhibitory homeostatic-like mechanisms of cortical excitability could be induced by high magnitude stimulati…
