Experimental analysis of a thermoactive underground railway station

2022

Little is known about the real energy potential of thermoactive underground infrastructures, such as railway stations, that can act as a heating/cooling provider for the built environment. This study presents the results of thermomechanical full-scale in situ testing and numerical analysis of a thermoactive underground train station. The thermal performance and related geostructural impact of a portion of the new underground energy infrastructure (UEI) installed at the Lancy-Bachet train station in Geneva (Switzerland) are analyzed. Heating and cooling tests simulating real operative geothermal conditions are considered. Particular attention is given to ((i) the monitored wall-tunnel hydrot…

Mono and Stereoscopic Image Analysis for Detecting the Transverse Profile of Worn-Out Rails

2012

AbstractThe purpose of this paper is to suggest a new procedure for reconstructing the transverse profile of rails in operation by means of image-processing technique. This methodological approach is based on the “information” contained in high-resolution photographic images of tracks and on specific algorithms which allow to obtain the exact geometric profile of the rails and therefore to measure the state of the rail-head extrados wear. The analyses and the results concern rails taken from railway lines under upgrading by means of mono- and stereoscopic methods which are appropriate to be employed in laboratory applications or in high-efficiency surveys in situ.

A Random Dot Stereoacuity Test based on 3D Technology

2014

This paper presents a novel stereo acuity test that is realized by a software program on a PC with 3D capabilities. The 3D technology is used to provide two separate images to the two eyes. The test is a classical random dot test, but differently to other test printed on paper, the images shown to the patient can vary and there is no monocular clue. These features allow to deliver the test also in groups (instead of individuals) like school classes, and to increase the sensitivity. The system can be easily used also by not specialized personnel and this may further increase the cost efficiency of the test. Experiments carried on with a large set of children of age between five and seven yea…

Conclusions from the Evaluation of Virtual Machine Based High Resolution Display Wall System

2016

There are several approaches to the construction of large scale high resolution display walls depending on the required use case. Some require support of 3D acceleration APIs like OpenGL, some require stereoscopic projection. Others simply require a surface with a very high display resolution. The authors of this paper have developed a virtual machine based high resolution display wall architecture that works for all planar projection use cases and does not require a custom integration. The software that generates the presented content is executed in a virtual machine thus no specific APIs other than those of the virtualized OS are required. Any software that is able to run under a given OS…

Soft switched interleaved boost converters used as high-power battery discharge regulator for space power systems

2004

In the following years the telecommunication satellites will have a much greater power demand than nowadays. One reason for this is that the geostationary orbit required by this kind of satellites is becoming too crowded. Probably power levels of l0 kW to l00 kW will be the standard and with life duration of 25 years. It is not possible to keep 0.5 kW modules with more than 100 in parallel and therefore higher power modules (5 kW) must be used. A higher bus voltage seems also necessary and keeping a safety limit of 150 V, any voltage below it and above 100 V could meet the needs. In this paper we will propose a topology that fits the application: two soft switched interleaved boost converte…

Describing urban soils through a faceted system ensures more informed decision-making

2016

Urban areas are increasing worldwide at a dramatic rate and their soils definitely deserve more attention than they have received in the past. In urban environments, soils potentially provide the same ecosystem services as in rural and wild environments, although in some cases they are depleted of their basic functions, such as when they lose their productive and filtering capacities because of sealing, and become mere supports for infrastructures. In other cases, soils of urban areas acquire new functions that are unique to these environments. Current soil classifications fail to effectively account for the complexity of urban soils and the information that is required for their management…

Multimodal user interface for a semi-robotic visual assistance system for image guided neurosurgery

2005

Abstract We developed a visual assistance system for image guided neurosurgery, consisting of a stereoscopic digital camera (exoscope) mounted on a semi-robotic manipulator. In order to minimize the operation time, the application-specific multimodal user interface enables hands-free manipulation of the exoscope. The surgeon wears thereby a head-mounted unit with a binocular display, a head tracker, a microphone and earphones. Different modes of view positioning and adjustment can be selected by voice and controlled by head rotation while pressing a miniature confirmation button mounted on a finger ring or suction device. Apart from the development of the mechatronic and software modules of…

CLA-Enriched Diet Containing t10,c12-CLA Alters Bile Acid Homeostasis and Increases the Risk of Cholelithiasis in Mice

2011

International audience; Mice fed a mixture of CLA containing t10,c12-CLA lose fat mass and develop hyperinsulinemia and hepatic steatosis due to an accumulation of TG and cholesterol. Because cholesterol is the precursor in bile acid (BA) synthesis, we investigated whether t10,c12-CLA alters BA metabolism. In Expt. 1, female C57Bl/6J mice were fed a standard diet for 28 d supplemented with a CLA mixture (1 g/100 g) or not (controls). In Expt. 2, the feeding period was reduced to 4, 6, and 10 d. In Expt. 3, mice were fed a diet supplemented with linoleic acid, c9,t11-CLA, or t10,c12-CLA (0.4 g/100 g) for 28 d. In Expt. 1, the BA pool size was greater in CLA-fed mice than in controls and the …

Abstract The enantiomeric and diastereomeric profiling of chiral pharmaceuticals (ephedrine, norephedrine, atenolol and venlafaxine) and illicit drugs (amphetamine, methamphetamine, 3,4-methylenedioxyamphetamine (MDA), 3,4-methylenedioxy- N -methylamphetamine (MDMA) and 3,4-methylenedioxy- N -ethylamphetamine (MDEA)) was undertaken over a period of fourteen consecutive days in three wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in the city of Valencia, Spain. Degradation efficiency of WWTPs was found to be compound and enantiomer dependent. Selective enantiomer enrichment was observed for several target analytes. Amphetamine and MDMA were enriched with R (−)-enantiomers. 1 S ,2 S (+)-pseudoephedrine …

The toxicity and concentrations of PAHs in creosote-contaminated lake sediment

1999

Sediment samplers, divided into three layers (0 – 10, 10 – 20 and 20 – 30 cm), were collected from 16 sites in Lake Jamsanvesi, Central Finland. The acute toxicity of pore waters and elutriates (sediment + water 1:4 v/v) were studied by bioluminescence inhibition test and by immobilisation of water fleas (Daphnia magna Straus). Concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sediments and elutriates were measured by gas chromatography using flame ionization detection (GC/FID). The highest total PAH concentration was 3.3 mg/g dry weight in the sediment and up to 1.7 mg/l in the elutriate of the uppermost (0 – 10 cm) layer, also being the most toxic to photoluminencent bacteria, …
