Recombinant expression of human microsomal epoxide hydrolase protects V79 Chinese hamster cells from styrene oxide- but not from ethylene oxide-induc…

1997

Styrene 7,8-oxide and ethylene oxide are widely used genotoxic bulk chemicals, which have been associated with potential carcinogenic hazard for occupationally exposed workers. Both epoxides alkylate DNA preferentially at the N-7 position of guanine and consequently produce single-strand breaks and alkali labile sites in the DNA of exposed cells. In order to study the role of human microsomal epoxide hydrolase (hmEH) in protecting cells against genotoxicity of styrene 7,8-oxide and ethylene oxide, we expressed the cDNA of hmEH in V79 Chinese hamster cells. We obtained a number of cell clones that expressed functionally active epoxide hydrolase. Among these, the clone 92hmEH-V79 revealed an …

Glycidyl Tosylate: Polymerization of a “Non‐Polymerizable” Monomer permits Universal Post‐Functionalization of Polyethers

2019

Abstract Glycidyl tosylate appears to be a non‐polymerizable epoxide when nucleophilic initiators are used because of the excellent leaving group properties of the tosylate. However, using the monomer‐activated mechanism, this unusual monomer can be copolymerized with ethylene oxide (EO) and propylene oxide (PO), respectively, yielding copolymers with 7–25 % incorporated tosylate‐moieties. The microstructure of the copolymers was investigated via in situ 1H NMR spectroscopy, and the reactivity ratios of the copolymerizations have been determined. Quantitative nucleophilic substitution of the tosylate‐moiety is demonstrated for several examples. This new structure provides access to a librar…

Amino Functional Poly(ethylene glycol) Copolymers via Protected Amino Glycidol

2010

The synthesis of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) copolymers with multiple amino functionalities within the chain is described, relying on an epoxide comonomer bearing a protected amino group. N,N-dibenzyl amino glycidol (DBAG) and ethylene oxide (EO) were copolymerized via anionic polymerization, leading to well-defined polymers with varied comonomer content and low polydispersities (Mw/Mn in the range of 1.1 to 1.2). Subsequent hydrogenolysis with Pearlman’s catalyst afforded poly(ethylene glycol-co-amino glycerol)s (PEG-co-PAG) with a precisely adjusted number of randomly incorporated amino groups in the range of 2−15%. For the first time, the kinetics of an EO copolymerizations have has been…

Inflammatory fibro-epithelial hyperplasia related to a fixed implant-supported prosthesis : a case report

2018

The gingival overgrowth is a common finding in the clinical practice with a diverse etiology. There are no treatment guidelines defined for this oral lesions. These can provoke discomfort to the patient and often, can alter the function of the stomatologic system. This article presents a case report of a bilateral gingival overgrowth in a 68 years old woman wearing a fixed upper-arch implant-supported prosthesis placed five years ago. The clinical exam after removing the prosthesis showed an intense accumulation of plaque around the intermediate abutments associated to a mucosal enlargement with suppuration on touching the buccal area of the implant in position 1.5 and a probing depth of 8m…

Polymeric microcontainers improve oral bioavailability of furosemide.

2016

Microcontainers with an inner diameter of 223 μm are fabricated using the polymer SU-8, and evaluated in vitro, in situ and in vivo for their application as an advanced oral drug delivery system for the poorly water soluble drug furosemide. An amorphous sodium salt of furosemide (ASSF) is filled into the microcontainers followed by applying a lid using Eudragit L100. It is possible to control the drug release in vitro, and in vitro absorption studies show that the microcontainers are not a hindrance for absorption of ASSF. In situ perfusion studies in rats are performed with ASSF-filled microcontainers coated with Eudragit and compared to a furosemide solution. The absorption rate constant …

From the South. Ernesto Basile's Routes and Destinations

2014

Except for a few gaps, the Basile's archive is one of the best maintained contemporary architectural archives in Europe. Basile wrote extensively about his travels and discussed their context and significance. The documents range from reports on the World Exhibition in Paris in 1878, to stories of Ortensio Lando, the sixteenth-century Italian humanist and traveler, who moved "from the far Sicily to the edge of the Alps".

Debating Europe: Effects of the “Eurovision Debate” on EU Attitudes of Young German Voters and the Moderating Role Played by Political Involvement

2016

In the run-up to the elections to the European Parliament in 2014, EU citizens had the unprecedented opportunity to watch televised debates between the candidates running for president of the European Commission. The most important debate was the so-called "Eurovision debate", which was broadcasted in almost all EU member states. In this study we explore the responses of a sample of 110 young German voters, who watched this debate, to the candidates' messages and whether exposure to the debate caused a shift in the respondents' attitudes towards the EU. Combining data from a quasi-experiment, real-time response data, and data from a content analysis of the debate, we find that respondents' …

Understanding the Consequences of Accounting Standards in Europe: The Role of EFRAG

2012

The global financial crisis has accelerated the need for standard-setters to demonstrate that they understand the effects of the accounting standards they are setting. Within a European context, the endorsement process and the ultimate adoption of new and amended International Financial Reporting Standards into European Union law demand that there is evidence to support the assertion that such standards will improve financial reporting. Our analysis is anchored in the ideology theory of regulation which provides a compelling case for effect analysis to underpin the standard-setting process. For that process to work effectively, a number of key actors need to engage in the process. According…

Lacustrine sedimentation in the diapir-controlled Miocene Bicorb Basin, Eastern Spain

1998

The Miocene Bicorb Basin is a small elongated basin developed by normal faulting of a thick Jurassic–Cretaceous carbonate succession and subsequent diapirism of Upper Triassic mudstones and evaporites. The basin fill comprises a sequence over 650 m thick formed by two units. The lower, alluvial unit consists of a complex alternation of conglomerates, sandstones, mudstones, and minor lacustrine limestones. The upper unit comprises marginal alluvial and lacustrine deposits in which seven lacustrine facies associations have been distinguished. The inner lacustrine deposits comprise mudstones and carbonates with minor evaporitic deposits. At the northeast and southwest basin edges, alluvial inp…

Depositional environment and biofacies characterisation of the Triassic (Carnian to Rhaetian) carbonate succession of Punta Bassano (Marettimo Island…

2007

AThe aims of this study are to reconstruct the geological setting of the Punta Bassano series (Marettimo Island, Egadi Archipelago, western Sicily) and its palaeogeographic evolution. The reference section for the Upper Triassic of Marettimo shows an alternation of marl and limestone beds together with brecciated levels. The limestones are both homogeneous mudstones with evaporite pseudomorphs and laminated with fenestrae. Foraminiferal, palynomorph, and ostracod associations constrain the Punta Bassano sequence to the Carnian-Rhaetian interval. The Punta Bassano succession represents a shallow inner ramp, ranging from open-marine environment with good water circulation to lagoonal and peri…
