A bizarre foreign body in the appendix: A case report.

Foreign bodies are rare causes of appendicitis and, in most cases, ingested foreign bodies pass through the alimentary tract asymptomatically. However, ingested foreign bodies may sometimes remain silent within the appendix for many years without an inflammatory response. Despite the fact that cases of foreign-body-induced appendicitis have been documented, sharp and pointed objects are more likely to cause perforations and abscesses, and present more rapidly after ingestion. Various materials, such as needles and drill bits, as well as organic matter, such as seeds, have been implicated as causes of acute appendicitis. Clinical presentation can vary from hours to years. Pressure dependence of the optical properties of wurtzite and rock-salt Zn1–xCoxO thin films

In this paper we investigate the electronic structure of Zn 1-x Co x O by means of optical absorption measurements under pressure. Thin films of Zn 1-x Co x O with different Co content (from 1 to 30%) were prepared by pulsed laser deposition on mica substrates. Absorption spectra exhibit three main features that are clearly correlated to the Co content in the films: (i) absorption peaks in the infrared associated to crystal-field-split internal transitions in the Co 3d shell, with very small pressure coefficients due to their atomic character; (ii) a broad absorption band below the fundamental edge associated to charge transfer transitions, that exhibit relatively large pressure coefficient…

Absorption kinetics and swelling stresses in hydrothermally aged epoxies investigated by photoelastic image analysis

Abstract The present work proposes an experimental optical methodology able to measure the transient swelling stresses induced by the water uptake ageing of polymers. In particular, the work describes the implementation of a Photoelastic technique to quantify internal stresses arising during the hydrothermal ageing of cast epoxy samples. The material investigated is a model DGEBA/DDS epoxy system. Curing and post-curing cycles have been optimised in order to obtain a fully cured, high T g , and completely stress free initial condition. This work aimed to investigate the effect of hybrid carbon nanofillers (e.g., carbon nanotubes/carbon nanofibers in the ratio 1:1 by mass) over the electrical and flexural properties for an epoxy matrix and corresponding basalt fibre reinforcing composite (BFRC) subjected to full-year seasonal water absorption. Water absorption and hydrothermal ageing of epoxy adhesives reinforced with amino-functionalized graphene oxide nanoparticles

Abstract The study is focused on quantitative characterization of water absorption and hydrothermal ageing effects in a room-temperature amine cured epoxy adhesive widely used in automotive, aerospace, construction, and marine industries. Vibrational analysis of Ni(II)- and Cu(II)-octamethylchlorin by polarized resonance Raman and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy

We measured the polarized resonance Raman spectra of Cu(II)-2,2,7,8,12,13,17,18-octamethylchlorin in CS2 at various excitation wavenumbers in a spectral region covering the Qy, Qx and Bx optical absorption bands. Additionally, we measured the FTIR-Raman spectrum of the highly overcrowded spectral region between 1300 and 1450 cm−1. The spectral decomposition was carried out by a self-consistent global fit to all spectra obtained. Ag11(SG)7 : A New Cluster Identified by Mass Spectrometry and Optical Spectroscopy

We report a one-step and high yield synthesis of a red-luminescent silver cluster with the molecular formula, Ag11(SG)7 (SG: glutathionate) via reduction of silver ions by sodium borohydride in the presence of the tripeptide, glutathione (GSH). The as-prepared cluster shows prominent absorption features at 485 and 625 nm in its UV-vis absorption spectrum. Aging of the as-prepared cluster solution led to the disappearance of the 625 nm peak, followed by broadening of the 485 nm peak to give three maxima at ?487, 437, and 393 nm in its absorption spectrum. Fabrication and characterization of vacuum deposited fluorescein thin films

Simple vacuum evaporation technique for deposition of dyes on various solid surfaces has been developed. The method is compatible with conventional solvent-free nanofabrication processing enabling fabrication of nanoscale optoelectronic devices. Thin films of fluorescein were deposited on glass, fluorine-tin-oxide (FTO) coated glass with and without atomically layer deposited (ALD) nanocrystalline 20 nm thick anatase TiO2 coating.
