The feasibility and possible benefits of indoor exergames in primary school
2017
The purpose of this study is to identify the potential contribution of exergames to Primary schoolers, to define what exergames are and to classify them, as well as whether exergames could be an effective tool in physical education lessons from the point of view of students. Can exergames work as a spark to turn on the engine of physical activity practice? Will students acquire or even develop any motor skills by playing exergames that can be transferred into classical physical activities? The study was conducted with eight students of 6th grade in a Primary school in Finland. Students were selected randomly without asking prerequisites or gaming background. During spring season the group p…
Lastentarhanopettajat liikunnan suunnittelijoina
2014
Tiivistelmä. Piiroinen, Reetta & Saari, Saila. 2014. Lastentarhanopettajat liikunnan suunnittelijoina. Varhaiskasvatustieteen kandidaatintutkielma. Kasvatustie- teiden laitos. Jyväskylän yliopisto. 50 sivua + liitteet. Tutkimuksemme on tärkeä, koska varhaiskasvatusikäisten lasten liikuntaa on tutkittu vähän. Varhaiskasvatusikäisten lasten liikuntatutkimukset painottuvat lasten aktiivisuuden ja terveysvaikutusten tutkimiseen, joten on hyödyllistä tutkia lastentarhanopettajien toimintaa lasten liikunnan toteuttajina. Tutkimuksemme tavoitteena oli selvittää, miten lastentarhanopettajat suunnittelevat liikuntatuokioita lapsiryhmässä. Tutkimuksen aineistonhankinnan toteutimme tekemällä interneti…
Role of situational context in use continuance after critical exergaming incidents
2019
Use continuance is crucial in terms of information systems (IS) success. Previous research has shown that situational context can be central for IS use continuance but has paid limited attention to its specific characteristics. Furthermore, the link between situational context and use continuance has remained unexplored in the novel area of “exergames,” which are defined as digital games requiring physical effort from the player that determines the outcome of the game. Studying exergames is deemed important due to their potential in providing health benefits for users, revenues for providers, and well‐being for societies. However, their potential remains unreached because users tend to disc…
Simple view of reading across the transition from kindergarten to Grade 1 in a transparent orthography
2023
Purpose: This longitudinal study investigated the simple view of reading (SVR) model and its cognitive basis in a transparent orthography of the Lithuanian across the transition from kindergarten to Grade 1. Method: The language and early literacy skills of 229 children (Mage = 6.79, SD = .47) were tested at the end of kindergarten (vocabulary, letter knowledge, phonological awareness, and RAN); listening comprehension and word reading fluency were tested at the start of Grade 1; and reading comprehension was measured at the end of Grade 1. Results: Together with parental education, word reading fluency and listening comprehension predicted reading comprehension (R2 = 43.2%). The second mod…
Kindergarten teachers’ accounts of their developing mathematical practice
2012
Published version of an article in the journal: ZDM. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s11858-012-0422-1 This study explores kindergarten teachers’ accounts of their developing mathematical practice in the context of their participation in a developmental research project. Observations and interviews were analysed to elaborate the accounts as regards orchestrating mathematical activities in the kindergarten. A co-learning agreement was established as collaboration between the kindergarten teachers and researchers. The study reveals that the kindergarten teachers argue that they have been empowered in developing an inquiry stance towards mathematics and mathemat…
Home Literacy Activities and Children’s Reading Skills, Independent Reading, and Interest in Literacy Activities From Kindergarten to Grade 2
2020
According to the Home Literacy Model (Sénéchal and LeFevre, 2002, 2014), young children can be exposed to two distinct types of literacy activities at home. First, meaning-related literacy activities are those where print is present but is not the focus of the parent–child interaction, for example, when parents read storybooks to their children. In contrast, code-related literacy activities focus on the print, for example, activities such as when parents teach their children the names and sounds of letters or to read words. The present study was conducted to expand the Home Literacy Model by examining its relation with children’s engagement in literacy activities at home and at school as Fi…
OC2.01: Examination of the fetal brain by three-dimensional ultrasound: potential for routine neurosonographic studies
2005
Objective: To evaluate the role of three-dimensional (3D) ultrasound in the assessment of the fetal brain and its potential for routine neurosonographic studies. Methods: We studied prospectively 202 consecutive brain fetuses between 16 and 24 weeks’ gestation. A 3D-ultrasound volume of the fetal head was acquired transabdominally. The entire brain anatomy was later analyzed by a sonologist expert in neonatal cranial sonography using the multiplanar images. The quality of the conventional planes obtained (coronal, sagittal and axial, at different levels) and the ability to visualize properly the major brain anatomic structures were evaluated. Results: Acceptable rendered cerebral volumes we…
Pokémon GO 2016: Exploring Situational Contexts of Critical Incidents in Augmented Reality
2016
Pokémon GO, an augmented reality mobile game, captured the attention of millions of people around the world in July 2016. Various sources from around the globe have reported both positive and negative incidents and outcomes related to the game. Some of the incidents have been particularly remarkable for the player, i.e., critical incidents. A critical incident is a single experience, which a person perceives or remembers as unusually positive or negative. Critical incidents typically are highly influential for human behaviour, and thus, important to study. Playing augmented reality games can take place in varying situational contexts. Situational context includes information that can be use…
The developmental dynamics of task-avoidant behavior and math performance in kindergarten and elementary school
2012
Besides cognitive factors, children's learning at school may be influenced by more dynamic phenomena, such as motivation and achievement-related task-avoidant behavior. The present study examined the developmental dynamics of task-avoidant behavior and math performance from kindergarten to Grade 4. A total of 225 children were tested for their arithmetic skills in kindergarten and in Grades 1, 2, and 4 of elementary school. Children's task-avoidant behavior in learning situations was rated by their teachers. The results of latent growth curve analyses showed that math performance and task-avoidant behavior develop in tandem: an increase in task-avoidant behavior was related to less improvem…
