Phytochemical study of Cistus libanotis L.

2015

n continuation of our ongoing study on Mediterranean Flora, we focused the attention on Cistus genus. These plants possess interesting secondary metabolites and are used in many fields, principally in perfumery and more recently as raw material for food supplements (botanicals). n this article, we report the phytochemical analysis of Cistus libanotis L. from Tunisia. Among the diterpenes, labdane compounds resulted absent, in favour of two clerodanes, one of that never reported in Cistus sp. The main representative compounds were found to be several flavonoids with various grades of O-methylation. Other interesting components were two cinnamic esters of borneol, reported here for the first …

An EKF Based Method for Path Following in Turbulent Air

2017

An innovative use of the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) is proposed to perform both accurate path following and adequate disturbance rejection in turbulent air. The tuned up procedure employs simultaneously two different EKF: the first one estimates gust disturbances, the second one estimates modified aircraft parameters. The first filter, by using measurements gathered in turbulent air, estimates both aircraft states and wind components. The second one, by using the estimated disturbances, obtains command laws that are able to reject disturbances. The predictor of the second EKF uses the estimated wind components to solve motion equations in turbulent air. Besides a set of unknown stability …

Computerized dynamic fluid simulation (CFD) for measuring the influence of the cab deflector on the aerodynamics of trucks

2021

This paper refers to how the cab deflector of trucks can influence the aerodynamic coefficient. The first part of the paper includes some generalities taken from previous studies, regarding the types of solutions to improve aerodynamics for trucks. The second part of the paper is a more practical one and has two main chapters: modeling and simulation of modeled parts. In this sense, a truck and 3 cabin deflectors were schematically modeled in Catia v5. After assembly in the Catia v5 program, the impact of the cabin deflector was analyzed. Thus, a computerized dynamic fluid simulation (CFD) was performed using the specific module in Ansys. The simulation included the CFD analysis of the four…

Family studies in scleroderma (systemic sclerosis) demonstrating an HLA-linked increased chromosomal breakage rate in cultured lymphocytes

1988

An increased chromosomal breakage rate (ICBR) was found in 27 of 28 patients with scleroderma (systemic sclerosis, SS) - 5 with the syndrome including calcinosis cutis, Raynaud phenomenon, esophagus hypomotility, sclerodactyly and telangiectasia (CREST), 4 incomplete CREST, 1 overlapping syndrome, 18 progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS). Not only the patients, but also about half of their first-degree relatives showed an increased chromosomal breakage rate (more than 5 breaks per 100 metaphases). This character segregated as a dominant marker in nine families of scleroderma patients. In the six informative of the nine families, the ICBR trait showed close linkage with the HLA region on chro…

Wild-type Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase stabilizes mutant variants by heterodimerization

2014

Mutations in the gene encoding Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase (SOD1) are responsible for a subset of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis cases presumably by the acquisition of as yet unknown toxic properties. Additional overexpression of wild-type SOD1 in mutant SOD1 transgenic mice did not improve but rather accelerated the disease course. Recently, it was documented that the presence of wild-type SOD1 (SOD(WT)) reduced the aggregation propensity of mutant SOD1 by the formation of heterodimers between mutant and SOD1(WT) and that these heterodimers displayed at least a similar toxicity in cellular and animal models. In this study we investigated the biochemical and biophysical properties of obligate…

Heterodimerization of Two Pathological Mutants Enhances the Activity of Human Phosphomannomutase2

2015

The most frequent disorder of glycosylation is due to mutations in the gene encoding phosphomannomutase2 (PMM2-CDG). For this disease, which is autosomal and recessive, there is no cure at present. Most patients are composite heterozygous and carry one allele encoding an inactive mutant, R141H, and one encoding a hypomorphic mutant. Phosphomannomutase2 is a dimer. We reproduced composite heterozygosity in vitro by mixing R141H either with the wild type protein or the most common hypomorphic mutant F119L and compared the quaternary structure, the activity and the stability of the heterodimeric enzymes. We demonstrated that the activity of R141H/F119L heterodimers in vitro, which reproduces t…

Pseudo-exclusion from paternity due to maternal uniparental disomy 16.

1998

The investigation of a case of disputed paternity revealed indirect exclusion of the alleged father in the haptoglobin system and in the DNA single-locus system D16S309/Hinf I (MS205). The paternity index for the non-exclusion systems was > 10(6). Since both exclusion systems (HP and MS205) are located on chromosome 16, we investigated 10 microsatellite loci covering this chromosome with 10-20 cM resolution. Analysis of the child's chromosome showed only alleles of maternal origin and lack of inheritance of paternal alleles for five informative loci. The markers close to the centromere of chromosome 16 were heterozygous, whereas distal loci were either heterozygous or homozygous for materna…
