Context: Machine learning has proved an efficient tool, but the systems need tools to mitigate risks during runtime. One approach is fault tolerance: detecting and handling errors before they cause harm. Objective: This paper investigates whether rare co-activations – pairs of usually segregated nodes activating together – are indicative of problems in neural networks (NN). We develop a Bayesian spatio-temporal model to study pre-industrial grain market integration during the Finnish famine of the 1860s. Our model takes into account several problematic features often present when analysing multiple spatially interdependent time series. For example, compared with the error correction methodology commonly applied in econometrics, our approach allows simultaneous modelling of multiple interdependent time series avoiding cumbersome statistical testing needed to predetermine the market leader as a point of reference. Estimation of linear errors-in-variable models with error free covariates: a backfitting approach

We present a backfitting algorithm to estimate linear regression mod- els having both error-prone and error-free covariates as predictors. The algorithm assumes that the variance-ratios are known, and it is particulary efficient when several explanatory variables are included. The resulting estimators are shown to be unbiased and to perform well as compared to method-of-moments estimators which are usually employed when the variance ratio is known.

In 2013, ex-National Security Agency (NSA) contractor Edward Snowden shocked the world by revealing the American NSA’s (and its partners’) extensive surveillance programs. The ensuing media discussion became a focal point for the justification and contestation of surveillance in the digital age.
