Visual-manual in-car tasks decomposed: text entry and kinetic scrolling as the main sources of visual distraction
2013
Distraction effects of in-car tasks with a touch screen based navigation system user interface were studied in a driving simulator experiment with eye tracking. The focus was to examine which particular in-car task components visually distract drivers the most. The results indicate that all of the visual-manual in-car tasks led to increased levels of experienced demands and to lower driving speeds. The most significant finding was that text entry and kinetic scrolling of lists were the main sources of visual distraction whereas simple selection tasks with familiar target locations led to least severe distraction effects.
A New Augmented Lagrangian Approach for $L^1$-mean Curvature Image Denoising
2015
Variational methods are commonly used to solve noise removal problems. In this paper, we present an augmented Lagrangian-based approach that uses a discrete form of the L1-norm of the mean curvature of the graph of the image as a regularizer, discretization being achieved via a finite element method. When a particular alternating direction method of multipliers is applied to the solution of the resulting saddle-point problem, this solution reduces to an iterative sequential solution of four subproblems. These subproblems are solved using Newton’s method, the conjugate gradient method, and a partial solution variant of the cyclic reduction method. The approach considered here differs from ex…
Designing browsing for in-car music player
2012
User interface features of a touch based mobile music player and their comparative impact on driver distraction when searching music albums were investigated. In a driving simulator experiment (N=18) three scrolling methods buttons, swipe and kinetic were compared, whereat the number of music tracks presented in a list-style format varied between three, five and seven items per page. Half of the participants used the music player in a portrait mode and half of them in a landscape mode. It was expected that swipe supports less severe distraction effects than kinetic or button due to systematic page-by-page scrolling and low levels of pointing accuracy required for browsing. Three items shoul…
Turing's error-revised
2016
Many important lines of argumentation have been presented during the last decades claiming that machines cannot think like people. Yet, it has been possible to construct devices and information systems, which replace people in tasks which have previously been occupied by people as the tasks require intelligence. The long and versatile discourse over, what machine intelligence is, suggests that there is something unclear in the foundations of the discourse itself. Therefore, we critically studied the foundations of used theory languages. By looking critically some of the main arguments of machine thinking, one can find unifying factors. Most of them are based on the fact that computers canno…
Efficient Time Integration of Maxwell's Equations with Generalized Finite Differences
2015
We consider the computationally efficient time integration of Maxwell’s equations using discrete exterior calculus (DEC) as the computational framework. With the theory of DEC, we associate the degrees of freedom of the electric and magnetic fields with primal and dual mesh structures, respectively. We concentrate on mesh constructions that imitate the geometry of the close packing in crystal lattices that is typical of elemental metals and intermetallic compounds. This class of computational grids has not been used previously in electromagnetics. For the simulation of wave propagation driven by time-harmonic source terms, we provide an optimized Hodge operator and a novel time discretizati…
Curvelet-based method for orientation estimation of particles from optical images
2014
A method based on the curvelet transform is introduced to estimate the orientation distribution from two-dimensional images of small anisotropic particles. Orientation of fibers in paper is considered as a particular application of the method. Theoretical aspects of the suitability of this method are discussed and its efficiency is demonstrated with simulated and real images of fibrous systems. Comparison is made with two traditionally used methods of orientation analysis, and the new curvelet-based method is shown to perform better than these tradi- tional methods. © The Authors. Evidence of Weak Halogen Bonding: New Insights on Itraconazole and its Succinic Acid Cocrystal
2012
Exact knowledge of the crystal structure of drugs and lead compounds plays a significant role in the fields of crystal engineering, docking, computational modeling (drug–receptor interactions), and rational design of potent drugs in pharmaceutical chemistry. The succinic acid cocrystal of the systemic antifungal drug, itraconazole, reported by Remenar et al. (J. Am. Chem. Soc.2003, 125, 8456–8457) (CSD: IKEQEU), represents one of the classical examples displaying a molecular fitting mechanism in the solid state. In this work, we disclose the X-ray single-crystal structure of the cis-itraconazole–succinic acid (2:1) cocrystal and found that it differs slightly from the previously reported st…
SERS detection of cell surface and intracellular components of microorganisms using nano-aggregated Ag substrate
2016
Abstract The intracellular and cell surface composition and structural features of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria were identified using near-infrared surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). The structural differences of components that reside in the cell envelope are manifested by their SERS spectra, e.g. gram-negative vs. gram-positive. Silver particles were used as a SERS substrate by exploiting the existence of strong local electromagnetic fields (hot spots) within nanoscale aggregates of the particles. The aggregation of silver nanoparticles was induced by magnesium ions. These hot spots reduce the screening length of the double layer. The obtained SERS spectra showed excell…

Nil de nihilo fit princips izmeklētāja atbildībā kriminālprocesā
2016
Izmeklētāja atbildība ir kriminālprocesa rezultāts – ja izmeklētājs, kriminālprocesu uzsākot, nepareizi rīkojas procesuālās darbībās, pierādījumu izņemšanā vai noskaidrošanā, tas var būtiski ietekmēt pierādījumu pieļaujamību kriminālprocesā un novest pie kriminālprocesa izbeigšanas pierādījumu trūkuma dēļ. (nil de nihilo fit princips- tulk. no latīņu val. no nekā nekas nerodas) Tas pārkāpj LR Satversmes 92.pantu - ikvienam ir tiesības uz taisnīgu tiesu un atbilstīgu nodarītā atlīdzinājumu. Jēdziens “izmeklētājs” kriminālprocesa izpratnē kādreiz bijis profesija, laika gaitā šis jēdziens no likuma izņemts, šobrīd Kriminālprocesa likums pieļauj izmeklēšanas darbības vienā kriminālprocesā veikt…
