The Chiral Anomaly

1989

The Dirac operator on a manifold M is a first order partial differential operator acting on sections of a spin bundle over M. The Dirac operator is elliptic when the metric of M is positive definite. The main task in this chapter is to study properties of the determinant of the Dirac operator.

Calculation of organic solvent–water partition coefficients of iron–sulfur protein models

2002

Abstract A method is presented that permits semiquantitative estimation of the partitioning of many solutes between many pairs of media. As an example, the organic solvent–water partition coefficients P are calculated. The only needed parameters are the dielectric constant and molecular volume of the organic solvent. Fe 4 S 4 Cys n models of high-potential FeS proteins are studied. The Gibbs free energies of solvation and partition coefficients for Fe 4 S 4 Cys n are calculated. The organic solvent–water partition coefficients for 1-octanol P o , cyclohexane P ch and chloroform P cf decrease 4.41, 6.22 and 4.60 log units per cysteine (Cys) ligand, respectively. P o results are compared with…

Gaussian processes retrieval of leaf parameters from a multi-species reflectance, absorbance and fluorescence dataset.

2013

Abstract: Biochemical and structural leaf properties such as chlorophyll content (Chl), nitrogen content (N), leaf water content (LWC), and specific leaf area (SLA) have the benefit to be estimated through nondestructive spectral measurements. Current practices, however, mainly focus on a limited amount of wavelength bands while more information could be extracted from other wavelengths in the full range (400-2500 nm) spectrum. In this research, leaf characteristics were estimated from a field-based multi-species dataset, covering a wide range in leaf structures and Chl concentrations. The dataset contains leaves with extremely high Chl concentrations (>100 mu g cm(-2)), which are seldom es…

DNA methylation episignature testing improves molecular diagnosis of Mendelian chromatinopathies

2021

Abstract Purpose Chromatinopathies include more than 50 disorders caused by disease-causing variants of various components of chromatin structure and function. Many of these disorders exhibit unique genome-wide DNA methylation profiles, known as episignatures. In this study, the methylation profile of a large cohort of individuals with chromatinopathies was analyzed for episignature detection. Methods DNA methylation data was generated on extracted blood samples from 129 affected individuals with the Illumina Infinium EPIC arrays and analyzed using an established bioinformatic pipeline. Results The DNA methylation profiles matched and confirmed the sequence findings in both the discovery an…

Simultaneous analysis of lysine, Nɛ-carboxymethyllysine and lysinoalanine from proteins

2007

Protein quality was assayed by simultaneous measurement of lysine (Lys), carboxymethyllysine (CML) and lysinoalanine (LAL). GC-FID analysis of N-tert-butyl dimethylsilyl (tBDMSi) derivatives of these amino acids was undertaken. tBDMSi derivates were separated on a CP-SIL 5CB commercially fused silica capillary column (25 m × 0.25 mm i.d., 0.25 μm film thickness) employing a thermal gradient programmed from 200 to 300 °C. The identity of tBDMSi derivatives of Lys, CML and LAL was established by GC–MS while FID detection was employed for quantification. Analytical parameters such as linearity (lysine 350–4200 μM, LAL 3–81 μM, CML 16–172 μM), precision (1–13% variation coefficients), accuracy …

Approaches to estimate the time and height at the peak maximum in liquid chromatography based on a modified Gaussian model

2011

The time and height at the peak maximum are key parameters to describe a chromatographic peak with prediction or optimization purposes, or in the qualitative/quantitative analysis of samples. Three different approaches to estimate these parameters, using the experimental points in the peak maximum region, are here described and compared. The approaches are based on the reliable description of the peak profile using a modified Gaussian model with a parabolic variance (PVMG). In the first approach, non-linear fitting of the chromatographic data to the PVMG model is carried out to obtain the time and height at the peak maximum (Approach I). In the other two approaches, the PVMG model is linear…

Gas chromatography-fourier transform infrared spectrometry of fatty acids: New Applications with a direct deposition interface

1998

Infrared spectroscopy is a suitable spectroscopic method to differentiate geometric Z and E isomers of unsaturated compounds. A direct-deposition Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR), coupled to a gas chromatograph, was used successfully to analyze with a high sensitivity traces of C18:1 fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) isomers. It could also conclusively distinguish between isomers of conjugated diunsaturated FAME. The achievable sensitivity of this direct-deposition device makes possible accurate FAME mixture analyses that are not currently attainable with the more conventional light-pipe interface.

Resin adsorption as a means to enrich rare stilbenes and coumarin from pigeon pea leaves extracts

2011

Abstract In this study, resin adsorption as a means to enrich rare stilbenes cajaninstilbene acid (CSA) and longistyline C (LLC), and coumarin cajanuslactone (CL) from pigeon pea leaves was investigated. Among widely used twenty macroporous adsorption resins, NKA-9 resin presented higher adsorption capacity and desorption ratio in static tests. The adsorption kinetic model fitted better depended on types of compounds and pH values. The experimental adsorption data were better fitted to Langmuir isotherm (R2 0.921–0.991) than Freundlich isotherm (R2 0.753–0.988). In order to optimize the operating parameters for separating CSA, LLC and CL, dynamic adsorption and desorption tests were carried…

High-performance liquid chromatographic determination of furfural compounds in infant formulas during full shelf-life

2005

Abstract In order to evaluate the extent of the Maillard reaction in adapted and follow-up infant formulas (IF), a study was made of the evolution of furfural compound (2-furaldehyde, 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furfuraldehyde, 2-furylmethylketone and 5-methyl-2-furaldehyde) in these products, along with their relation to available lysine during the shelf-life period (two years at 20 and 37 °C). Total and free furfural contents were measured by RP-HPLC and UV detection, heating or not the sample in boiling water to free the furfurals bound to proteins and the furfurals formed from precursors. Only 2-furylmethylketone and 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furfuraldehyde were detected. Adapted and follow-up IF showed …
