Measurement of Agglomeration and Spatial Effects
2009
The aim of the paper is to examine the influence of spatial agglomeration on the employment growth in the sicilian local labor systems. In this paper we want provide a methodological contribution to agglomeration literature. On the base of the hypothesis that the forces of agglomeration do not use up their effects inside of a single SLL but they extend to more wide geographic areas, and their effect fall down on the adjacent territorial partition; we have modified the traditional agglomeration index built by Maurell and Sédillot in 1999, at first, inverting the role of the industry with that one of the area, so we obtain a measure of agglomeration for each area, and then we included a spati…
L’anno successivo, Vin…
Measuring agglomeration by spatial effects: a proposal
2015
In this paper we examine the influence of spatial dependence on the estimation of the effect of standard measures of agglomeration on local growth. The hypothesis is that the forces of agglomeration do not use up their effects inside a single local area but extend to wider geographic areas, particularly on the adjacent territories. To account for these spatial effects, we propose a modification of the traditional agglomeration index, suggested by Maurel and Sedillot (1999), including both agglomeration of economic activity within an area and neighbour effects, that is, the effect of agglomeration that comes from neighbouring areas. In the empirical exercise we compute the a-spatial and the …
A spatial analysis of Italian unemployment differences
2008
Using spatial econometric models, this paper focuses attention on the spatial structure of provincial unemployment disparities of Italian provinces for the year 2003. On the basis of findings from the economic literature and of the available socio-economic data, various model specifications including supply- and demand-side variables are tested. Further we use ESDA analysis as equivalent to integration analysis on time series; therefore it is applied on each variable, dependent and independent, involved in the statistical model. The suggestions of ESDA lead us to the most adequate statistical model, which estimates indicate that there is a significant degree of neighbouring effect (i.e. pos…
Impact of the Hypoechogenicity Criteria on Thyroid Nodule Malignancy Risk Stratification Performance by Different TIRADS Systems
2021
Background: Various Thyroid Imaging and Reporting data systems (TIRADS) are used worldwide for risk stratification of thyroid nodules. Their sensitivity is high, while the specificity is suboptimal. The aim of the study was to compare several TIRADS systems and evaluate the effect of hypoechogenicity as a sign of risk of malignancy on the overall assessment of diagnostic accuracy. Methods: The prospective study includes 274 patients with 289 thyroid nodules to whom US and risk of malignancy were assessed according to four TIRADS systems—European (EU-TIRADS), Korean (K-TIRADS), TIRADS by American College of Radiology (ACR TIRADS), and modified Kwak et al. TIRADS (L-TIRADS) systems, in which …
Observations of land use transformations during the Neolithic using exploratory spatial data analysis: contributions and limitations
2010
International audience; The settlement pattern analysis in archaeology implies some methodological questions. In this paper, we question some issues about the use of geostatistical methods for the observation of land use transformations during the Neolithic. We have developed two examples in Burgundy (France): the first one on a regional scale and the second one on a micro-regional scale. Using different ESDA approaches (Ripley’K function, Nearest Neighbour Distance, Kernel Density Estimation), we would like to underline what the methodological and archaeological contributions and their limits are. Both experiences point out that the results obtained depend not only on the analytical scale,…
L'évolution de l'occupation humaine : l'analyse spatiale exploratoire des données.Le problème de l'incertitude et de l'hétérogénéité des données en a…
2011
The analysis of the evolution of the settlement requires a lot of methodological questioning. Despite a frequent use of the spatial analysis methods, few works return to their methodological problems. This article proposes to make a comparison and a discussion around two exploratory statistical methods (the K function of Ripley and the Kernel Density Estimation). It seems that scale, quality and quantity of input data, are three essential parameters to be taken into account so as to lead a spatial analysis in archaeology. In intrinsic way, archaeological data are non homogeneous. For that purpose, our article proposes a multi scalar approach integrating the non homogeneousness character of …
Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance-favour reactive compared to atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance-favour dysplasi…
2005
Abstract Background and objectives: The current study compared the cervical cytological sub-category “atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance-favour reactive (AFR)”, recently recommended to be eliminated by the Bethesda system, to the sub-category “atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance-favour dysplasia (ASC-US)”, in terms of prevalence of coexistent squamous intraepithelial lesions of either low-grade (LSIL) or high-grade (HSIL) and rate of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. Study design: One hundred women with AFR and 100 with ASC-US were consecutively included in the study. All patients underwent colposcopy, followed by biopsy when necessary, and were screen…
Idiopathic thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura: strongest risk factor for relapse from remission is having had a relapse
2016
BACKGROUND Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is a rare, episodic clinical syndrome involving the production of thrombi in the microvasculature accompanied by thrombocytopenia and symptoms of organ ischemia. Idiopathic TTP develops when a patient produces antibodies that react with the protease ADAMTS13. The course after an episode is unpredictable; patients may relapse frequently or never. There is no laboratory value that can reliably predict potential relapse. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS To assess diagnostic and predictive values for risk of relapse, plasma samples from 27 patients with idiopathic TTP in remission were analyzed for anti-ADAMTS13 immunoglobulin (Ig)G, ADAMTS13 activit…
Predictors of Central Compartment Involvement in Patients with Positive Lateral Cervical Lymph Nodes According to Clinical and/or Ultrasound Evaluati…
2021
Lymph node neck metastases are frequent in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). Current guidelines state, on a weak level of evidence, that level VI dissection is mandatory in the presence of latero-cervical metastases. The aim of our study is to evaluate predictive factors for the absence of level VI involvement despite the presence of metastases to the lateral cervical stations in PTC. Eighty-eight patients operated for PTC with level II–V metastases were retrospectively enrolled in the study. Demographics, thyroid function, autoimmunity, nodule size and site, cancer variant, multifocality, Bethesda and EU-TIRADS, number of central and lateral lymph nodes removed, number of positive lymph n…
