Career opportunities and benefits for young oncologists in the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO)

2016

The European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) is one of the leading societies of oncology professionals in the world. Approximately 30% of the 13 000 ESMO members are below the age of 40 and thus meet the society's definition of young oncologists (YOs). ESMO has identified the training and development of YOs as a priority and has therefore established a comprehensive career development programme. This includes a leadership development programme to help identify and develop the future leaders in oncology. Well-trained and highly motivated future generations of multidisciplinary oncologists are essential to ensure the optimal evolution of the field of oncology with the ultimate goal of pro…

European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) position paper on supportive and palliative care

2018

Oncology has come a long way in addressing patients' quality of life, together with developing surgical, radio-oncological and medical anticancer therapies. However, the multiple and varying needs of patients are still not beingmet adequately as part of routine cancer care. Supportive and palliative care interventions should be integrated, dynamic, personalised and based on best evidence. They should start at the time of diagnosis and continue through to end-of-life or survivorship. ESMO is committed to excellence in all aspects of oncological care during the continuum of the cancer experience. Following the 2003 ESMO stand on supportive and palliative care (Cherny N, Catane R, Kosmidis P. …

Comparison of the value of PCNA and Ki-67 as markers of cell proliferation in ameloblastic tumors

2012

Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare among PCNAand Ki-67 as the most reliable immunohisto chemical marker for evaluating cell proliferation in ameloblastic tumors. Study Design: Observational, retrospective, and descriptive study of a large series of ameloblastic tumors, com- D esign: Observational, retrospective, and descriptive study of a large series of ameloblastic tumors, com- esign: Observational, retrospective, and descriptive study of a large series of ameloblastic tumors, com posed of 161 ameloblastomas and four ameloblastic carcinomas, to determine and compare PCNA and Ki-67 expression using immunohistochemistry techniques. Results: When analyzing Ki-67 positivity, the…

Desmoplastic ameloblastoma of maxilla: a case report

2010

Ameloblastoma is the most common neoplasm affecting the jaws, arising from the odontogenic epithelium. Despite its locally aggressive nature, it is considered to be benign. The chief histopathological variants of ameloblastoma are the follicular and plexiform types, followed by the acanthomatous and granular cell types. Uncommon variants include desmoplastic, basal cell, clear cell ameloblastoma, keratoameloblastoma and papilliferous keratoameloblastoma. When the desmoplastic type co-exists with other types, it is called as “hybrid” ameloblastoma. There are significant anatomic, histopathological and radiological differences between desmoplastic ameloblastoma and the classical type. The pur…

Symmetrical palatal fibromatosis: An additional case report with immunohistochemical characterization

2021

Background The term "symmetrical palatal fibromatosis" was recently suggested to designate bilateral palatal lesions presenting as typically broad, "mirror" images on the posterior lateral region of the hard palate. Purpose We report an additional case of this as-yet poorly understood oral lesion in a 67-year-old male patient, with emphasis on differential diagnoses and immunohistochemical characterization. Case Report The histopathological examination demonstrated a hypocellular, fibrous connective tissue with prominent thick collagen bundles and few blood vessels. Scattered large, stellate, and sometimes binucleated fibroblasts were found. Immunohistochemistry was positive for vimentin an…

Kit Is Expressed by Epithelial Cells In Vivo

2003

In mammalian skin, stem cell factor (SCF) regulates the proliferation and maturation of mast cells and melanocytes, which are thought to be the only cutaneous cells that express the Kit-tyrosine kinase receptor (Kit) and respond to epithelial and mesenchymal-derived SCF. We previously had noted, however, the presence of Kit+ cells in murine hair follicles, in an introepithelial tissue compartment devoid of melanocytes and mast cells. Here we have identified the nature of this Kit+ population of cells in hair follicles of C57BL/6 mice. Anagen hair follicles showed strong Kit immunoreactivity not only in the pigmentary unit above the follicular dermal papilla but also in a much more proximall…

Fibronectin as an adjuvant in the diagnosis of oral inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor

2009

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor is a distinctive lesion composed of myofibroblastic spindle shaped cells accompanied by inflammatory infiltrate that may arise in various organs. It is believed to be a noneoplastic inflammatory condition, although this is still controversial. The recognition of inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor as an entity is important especially to avoid unnecessary surgery. A few cases have been reported in the oral cavity. This report primarily presents a case of inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor that arose in the floor of mouth of a 23-year-old woman. The proliferating spindle cells were immunoreactive for vimentin, smooth muscle actin, and muscle specific actin an…

Components from the Essential oil of Centaurea aeolica Guss. and C-diluta Aiton from Sicily, Italy

2015

Volatile components from florets, leaves and stems and branches of Centaurea aeolica Guss. harvested in Lipari, Sicily, Italy, were analysed by gas phase chomatography (GC) and gas chomatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The main constituents were β-eudesmol, caryophyllene oxide, ( E )-12-norcaryophyll-5-en-2-one and hexahydrofarnesylacetone in flowers, hexahydrofarnesylacetone, 2-methyloctadecane and tricosane in the leaves and hexadecanoic acid , caryophyllene oxide and β-eudesmol in the stems and branches . The analysis of the essential oil of the aerial parts of Centaurea diluta Aiton gave mainly fatty acids and derivatives, the main ones being hexadecanoic acid and (Z,Z)-9,12-octadeca…
