Volatile components of aerial parts of Centaurea nigrescens an C. stenolepis growing wild in the Balkans

2010

The volatile constituents of the aerial parts of Centaurea nigrescens Willd, collected in Romania and of two samples of C. stenolepis A. Kerner from Bulgaria and Romania were obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed. The main components of C. stenolepis were caryophyllene oxide (6.9-15.6%), hexahydrofarnesyl acetone (6.5-4.4%), heptacosane (6.0-4.9%) and p-vinyl guiacol (4.3-5.0%). The main components of C. nigrescens were caryophyllene oxide (9.9%), β-eudesmol (9.5%), spathulenol (7.6%), heptacosane (6.1%) and p-vinyl guiacol (5.5%). The chemotaxonomic significance with respect to their co-location in Sections Lepteranthus and Nigrescentes, respectively, is discussed.

Grassland fire effect on soil organic carbon reservoirs in a semiarid environment

2013

Abstract. The aim of this work was to investigate the effect of an experimental fire used for grassland management on soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks. The study was carried out on Hyparrhenia hirta (L.) Stapf (Hh) grassland and Ampelodesmos mauritanicus (Desf.) T. Durand & Schinz (Am) grasslands located in the north of Sicily. Soil samples were collected at 0–5 cm before and after the experimental fire, and SOC was measured. During the grassland fire, soil surface temperature was monitored. Biomass of both grasses was analysed in order to determine dry weight and its chemical composition. The results showed that SOC varied significantly with vegetation type, while it is not affecte…

Seasonal patterns in butterfly abundance and species diversity in five characteristic habitats in Sites of Community Importance in Sicily (Italy)

2015

Sicily (Italy) is one of the richest European regions in animal biodiversity. Butterflies offer good opportunities for studies on biodiversity , population and community ecology. Many species are strictly seasonal, preferring only a particular set of habitats. Five typical Mediterranean habitats: olive grove (conducted following organic farm management), mixed wood, ampelodesmos prairie (with dominance of Ampelodesmos mauritanicus), Mediterranean shrub and shrub at the coastal areas, were monitored for diversity and seasonal patterns in butterfly communities for 2 years. All habitats were inside protected areas indicated as Sites of Community Importance. Butterfly species richness was highe…

Mnemosyne-Lesmosyne. Memoria e oblio, mito e storia

1995

The focus of this paper concerns the role of myth and oblivion in the 20th century in the thought of Karl Kerényi: the political use of myth and its ideological manipulation. The reflection is developed through the examination of a neglected essay (Mnemosyne-Lesmosyne), written in 1945 and linked to the correspondence with Thomas Mann.

Analysis of sterols by high-performance liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry combined with chemometrics

2006

A newly developed high-performance liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (HPLC/MS) method has been successfully used to analyze plasma concentrations of various phytosterols (cholestanol and beta-sitosterol) and cholesterol metabolites (desmosterol and lathosterol). This was based on an unusual solvent combination of water/methanol vs. methanol/acetone/n-hexane applied on a Purospher Star RP-18e (125 x 2 mm, 3 microm) column, which proved excellent for the separation, identification and quantification of plasma sterols. Simple solid-phase extraction preparation of plasma samples was performed, followed by the developed fast and robust HPLC separation. Results on four groups of people were…

INTRABDOMINAL DESMOPLASTIC SMALL ROUND CELL TUMOR: CASE REPORT WITH LITERATURE REVIEW

2015

Intra-abdominal desmoplastic small round cell tumor arerrare aggressive neoplasm, with a very poor prognosis, observed in young adults with a male predominance, Their etiology is unknown and the diagnosis is based on histopathology, immunohistochemistry and cytogenetics. Histological analysis shows typically clusters of round cells separated by abundant desmoplastic stroma. These tumors exhibit a multi-marker immunohistochemistry profile expressing the three embryonic lineages: epithelial, neural and mesenchymal. They are positive for desmin and cytokeratin and are characterized by a specific recurring translocation t (11:22) (q12-p13), which involves EWSR! WT1 gene. They are usually fatal …

Sterol Composition in Infant Formulas and Estimated Intake.

2015

Sterol contents in infant formulas (IFs) from the European market were determined, and their intakes by infants between 0 and 6 months were evaluated. Total animal sterols (mg/100 mL) ranged from 1.71 to 5.46, cholesterol being the main animal sterol (1.46-5.1). In general, cholesterol and desmosterol were lower than the human milk (HM) values indicated by other authors. Total plant sterol (mg/100 mL) ranged from 3.1 to 5.0. β-Sitosterol, the most abundant phytosterol, ranged from 1.82 to 3.01, followed by campesterol (0.72-1.15), stigmasterol (0.27-0.53), and brassicasterol (0.14-0.28). Cholesterol intake (mg/day) ranged from 9 to 51 and plant sterol intake (mg/day) from 19 to 50. The ster…
