Analyse multirésolution pour la recherche et l'indexation d'images par le contenu dans les bases de données images - Application à la base d'images p…

2005

Recent content-based image retrieval systems offer an interactive visual browsing of images databases. These methods perform a classification of images (offline) into a search tree for users browsing (online). This approach shows three main problems:1) The size of decriptor vector (n>100) makes distance computing sensitive to dimensionality curse,2) Having many different kinds of attributes into descriptor vector does not help classification,3) In general, classification does not take in consideration users' search context. In this work, we propose a method based on building hierarchical signatures having small increasing sizes, this allows to take users' search context into consideration. …

Monitoring the evolution of coastline in Sicily by aerial photos and high resolution satellite imagery

2009

Italy is one of the country more exposed to coasts erosion: about 1200 km of coasts on about 8350 km are moved back of about 25 m in the last 50 years. Particularly Sicily have about 300 km of coasts moved back. There are various reasons of this phenomenon: natural factor (climatic or physical-oceanographic) with environmental and economic effects. The paper reviews the activity of the Dipartimento di Rappresentazione of University of Palermo in cooperation with the Regional Agency of Environmental Protection (ARPA) about the coastline evolution in Sicily. The research is carried out on selected physiographic units marked out by important erosive phenomena. The coastline trend are reconstru…

L’impiego di strumenti acustici ad alta risoluzione nella valutazione, monitoraggio e gestione delle praterie di Posidonia oceanica.

2015

High-resolution sonar system (MBS, SSS, Sub Bottom Profiler) was used to map and characterize Posidonia oceanica meadows, dead matte formations and to long-term monitor its progressive lower limit. Hydro-acoustic techniques allows to quickly acquire, at sufficiently low cost, a synoptic coverage of a large area and a high number of data by mean of non-destructive methods. Hence, they are recommended as useful tools for detecting and characterizing submerged aquatic vegetation.

Evaluation of Dysphagia and Inhalation Risk in Neurologically Impaired Children Using Esophageal High-Resolution Manometry with Swallowing Analysis

2022

Background: Dysphagia in neurologically impaired children is associated with feeding difficulties, malnutrition and aspiration pneumonia. Esophageal high-resolution manometry (HRM) has been used in the diagnosis of motility disorders affecting the swallowing process. The aim of this study was to analyze swallowing functions in NI children by using HRM in order to establish swallow parameters identifying inhalation risk. Methods: Twenty-five NI children with cerebral palsy were submitted to esophageal HRM with UES analysis, comparing the results with non-NI children. The following parameters were evaluated: maximum pressure and duration of contraction of the velopharynx (VP) and tongue base …

Physics opportunities with the Advanced Gamma Tracking Array : AGATA

2020

New physics opportunities are opening up by the Advanced Gamma Tracking Array, AGATA, as it evolves to the full 4π instrument. AGATA is a high-resolution γ-ray spectrometer, solely built from highly segmented high-purity Ge detectors, capable of measuring γ rays from a few tens of keV to beyond 10 MeV, with unprecedented efficiency, excellent position resolution for individual γ-ray interactions, and very high count-rate capability. As a travelling detector AGATA will be employed at all major current and near-future European research facilities delivering stable and radioactive ion beams. peerReviewed

Multi-objective human resources allocation in R&D projects planning

2009

In a R&D department, several projects may have to be implemented simultaneously within a certain period of time by a limited number of human resources with diverse skills. This paper proposes an optimisation model for the allocation of multi-skilled human resources to R&D projects, considering individual workers as entities having different knowledge, experience and ability. The model focuses on three fundamental aspects of human resources: the different skill levels, the learning process and the social relationships existing in working teams. The resolution approach for the multi-objective problem consists of two steps: firstly, a set of non-dominated solutions is obtained by exploring the…

X-ray flare modeling in the single giant HR 9024

2005

We analyze a Chandra-HETGS observation of the single G-type giant HR 9024. The high flux allows us to examine spectral line and continuum diagnostics at high temporal resolution, to derive plasma parameters (thermal distribution, abundances, temperature, ...). A time-dependent 1D hydrodynamic loop model with semi-length 10$^{12}$cm ($\sim R_{\star}$), and impulsive footpoint heating triggering the flare, satisfactorily reproduces the observed evolution of temperature and emission measure, derived from the analysis of the strong continuum emission. The observed characteristics of the flare appear to be common features in very large flares in active stars (also pre-main sequence stars), possi…

Space-Frequency Quantization for Image Compression With Directionlets

2007

The standard separable 2-D wavelet transform (WT) has recently achieved a great success in image processing because it provides a sparse representation of smooth images. However, it fails to efficiently capture 1-D discontinuities, like edges or contours. These features, being elongated and characterized by geometrical regularity along different directions, intersect and generate many large magnitude wavelet coefficients. Since contours are very important elements in the visual perception of images, to provide a good visual quality of compressed images, it is fundamental to preserve good reconstruction of these directional features. In our previous work, we proposed a construction of critic…

Sub-milliarcsecond imaging of a bright flare and ejection event in the extragalactic jet 3C 111

2020

Context. Flares in radio-loud active galactic nuclei are thought to be associated with the injection of fresh plasma into the compact jet base. Such flares are usually strongest and appear earlier at shorter radio wavelengths. Hence, very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) at millimeter(mm)-wavelengths is the best-suited technique for studying the earliest structural changes of compact jets associated with emission flares. Aims. We study the morphological changes of the parsec-scale jet in the nearby (z = 0.049) γ-ray bright radio galaxy 3C 111 following a flare that developed into a major radio outburst in 2007. Methods. We analyse three successive observations of 3C 111 at 86 GHz with th…
