From Familiar to Uncanny. Aesthetics of Atmospheres in Domestic Spaces

The notion of “familiar” has recently become crucial in the debate generated by Everyday Aesthetics. In this essay I will explore this concept following Arto Haapala and Yuriko Saito’s theories, then I will investigate the notion of familiar – and some antonym notions (i.e. strange, uncanny, alien) – while embracing a phenomenological approach. The present contribution aims at offering a brief rewiew of some main places in Herder aesthetical theory and at reconstructing the genesis of the family of concepts including fühlen, Gefühl, Mitfühlen, Familiengefühl, in order to understand their relationship with regard to the theory of knowledge, the aesthetics, the politics.

The paper focuses on Du Bos’ contribution to the birth of aesthetics. Du Bos elaborates – in an anticlassicistical tone – three central notions: 1) that of “artificial passion”, 2) of the taste of “the public” (which is in turn linked to a peculiar conception of “feeling”) and 3) of “artistic genius”. Figura fascinante y controvertida, el filósofo italiano Armando Plebe se formó en el Turín neoilustrado de la posguerra. Empezó su actividad combatiendo la estética de Croce cuando todavía era una obligación ser crociano, y combatió, en calidad de marxista, las hipocresías de la respetabilidad intelectual cuando era arriesgado declararse marxista. En 1968, cuando la izquierda occidental abrazó la “revolución”, Plebe, intolerante a las tendencias dominantes, no dudó en tomar partido por la valiente minoría de la “reacción”. Gracias a su versatilidad extraordinaria, ha dejado huella en diferentes campos de la cultura.
