Virtual Instruments: Uncertainty Evaluation in the Presence of Electromagnetic Interferences
2007
The electromagnetic interferences can influence the performances of a virtual instrument; consequently, in a generic measurement performed by using these instruments, the related uncertainty values can increase. In the paper, we report the results of various experimental tests performed with the aim to check if and how the radiated and/or conducted disturbances affect the instruments' characteristics and, in particular, the single uncertainty sources. Starting from these results and applying an already proposed method for the uncertainty estimation in the measurements performed by means of virtual instruments, it is possible to take into account and to evaluate the contribute of the electro…
Multiresolution wavelet-based approach to identification of modal parameters of a vehicle full-scale crash test
2012
In this work estimation of vehicle modal parameters was achieved by application of a wavelet-based method. The time-frequency analysis, which comprises those techniques that study a signal in both the time and frequency domains simultaneously, using Morlet wavelet properties are applied to the measured acceleration pulse of the colliding vehicle. Determination of the ridge of the wavelet coefficients matrix makes it possible to identify the frequency components of the recorded crash pulse. Subsequently, by using the estimated natural frequency of the system, the values of damping factor for a given mode shape are assessed. In this work there are concerned both: the major frequencies of the …
A PC-based instrument for harmonics and interharmonics measurement in power supply systems
2004
Abstract Growing interest on power quality has led international working groups to define new standards for testing and measurement techniques to apply to power systems. Special attention has been paid to harmonic and interharmonic measurements. Here, the authors introduce a PC-based instrument capable of synchronising sampling frequency with fundamental frequency in order to perform on-line voltage or current distortion analysis. The instrument has been developed in accordance with currently available standards and international documents, IEC 61000-4-7 Ed. 2002, IEC 61000-4-30 Ed. 2003, Draft Guide IEEE P1159.1 Ed. 2003 and limits given by IEC 61000 Part. 3. A detailed description of the …
Dynamic identification of a reinforced concrete frame in progressive states of damage
2006
Two, full size, reinforced concrete frames were put on a shaking table and underwent seismic excitations with increasing intensities. The aim of the reported experiment was to study changes in their dynamic, modal parameters due to development of cracks in concrete. Dynamic identification of these frames was carried out through diagnostic tests interlaced with the damaging excitations. This paper presents the results of their identification in various states of damage, using low level non-destructive damage estimation methods. A characteristic decrease of natural frequencies and an increase of structural damping was observed. The drop of the natural frequency was fastest for the 1st mode an…
Descriptor-type Robust Kalman Filter and Neural Adaptive Speed Estimation Scheme for Sensorless Control of Induction Motor Drive Systems
2012
Abstract This paper deals with robust estimation of speed and rotor flux for sensorless control of motion control systems which use induction motors as actuators. Due to the observability lack of five and six order Extended Kalman Filters, speed is here estimated by means of a Total Least Square algorithm with Neural Adaptive mechanism. This allows the use of a fourth-order Kalman Filter for estimating rotor flux and to filter stator currents. To cope with motor-load parameter variations, a descriptor-type robust Kalman Filter is designed taking explicitly into account these variations. The descriptor-type structure allows direct translation of parameter variations into variations of the co…
Automated single ring infiltrometer with a low-cost microcontroller circuit
2015
Automation of a new single ring infiltrometer.Data acquisition system based on the open source microcontroller platform Arduino.New method to minimize the disturbance of the soil surface.New approach to process transducer output. A method to automate data collection with a compact infiltrometer under constant head conditions was developed. The infiltrometer consists of a containment ring with a small quasi-constant head of water (i.e., 2-3mm) that is controlled by a Mariotte reservoir and a data acquisition system based on the open source microcontroller platform Arduino and a differential pressure transducer. The presented design can be easily reproduced and operated. The infiltrometer was …
A structured filter for Markovian switching systems
2014
In this work, a new methodology for the structuring of multiple model estimation schemas is developed. The proposed filter is applied to the estimation and detection of active mode in dynamic systems. The discrete-time Markovian switching systems represented by several linear models, associated with a particular operating mode, are studied. Therefore, the main idea of this work is the subdivision of the models set to some subsets in order to improve the detection and estimation performances. Each subset is associated with sub-estimators based on models of the subset. In order to compute the global estimate and subset probabilities, a global estimator is proposed. Theoretical developments ba…
Impedance estimation of FEA's grid in fiji islands by V-I measurement by using the synchronous reference frame-PLL
2017
In recent years there has been a significant increase in distributed renewable energy generation feeding into the grid, with resulting detriment of the stability of the network, since present networks have not been designed for this purpose. To feed-in these renewable energy sources with minimum impact, it is essential to know a few grid parameters (voltage, current, grid impedance) at the point in which power supply is convenient. For this purpose in this paper an algorithm is proposed to obtain the estimated network impedance. This algorithm operates in time domain by a synchronous reference coordinate transformation, it requires only the measurement of the phase voltage with no-load and …
Novel Resistance Measurement Method: Analysis of Accuracy and Thermal Dependence with Applications in Fiber Materials
2016
Material resistance is important since different physicochemical properties can be extracted from it. This work describes a novel resistance measurement method valid for a wide range of resistance values up to 100 GΩ at a low powered, small sized, digitally controlled and wireless communicated device. The analog and digital circuits of the design are described, analysing the main error sources affecting the accuracy. Accuracy and extended uncertainty are obtained for a pattern decade box, showing a maximum of 1 % accuracy for temperatures below 30 ∘ C in the range from 1 MΩ to 100 GΩ. Thermal analysis showed stability up to 50 ∘ C for values below 10 GΩ and systematic deviations for higher …
Entrepreneurial optimism and survival
2012
This paper uses entrepreneurs’ survival expectations around the time of market entry and subsequent venture exits to study entrepreneurial optimism. Using data on a large number of nascent entrepreneurs in the US and start-ups in Finland, we find that new entrepreneurs survival beliefs are on average optimistic but heterogeneous: Some are excessively optimistic, whereas a small subset holds unbiased beliefs. Entrepreneurial optimism is increasing in the relative (interpersonal) optimism and decreasing in entrepreneurs level of education and industry experience in both countries. At least in Finland, those holding optimistic views are more likely to transit into entrepreneurship.
