Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL, a.k.a Lnc2) is a member of the lipocalin family which has diverse roles including stabilizing matrix metalloproteinase-9 from auto-degradation and as siderocalins which are important in the transport of iron. NGAL also has important biological functions involved in immunity and inflammation as well as responses to kidney damage. NGAL expression has also been associated with certain neoplasia and is important in the metastasis of breast cancer. Uzmākšanās sievietēm publiskās vietās kā sociāla problēma

Bakalaura darba tēma ir “Uzmākšanās sievietēm publiskās vietās kā sociāla problēma”. Darba mērķis ir noskaidrot sieviešu uzskatus par uzmākšanos publiskās vietās kā par sociālu problēmu. Lai sasniegtu izvirzīto mērķi, tika veiktas daļēji strukturētas intervijas ar sievietēm vecumā no 18 līdz 25 gadiem. Bakalaura darba ietvaros tika noskaidrots sieviešu viedoklis par uzmākšanos publiskās vietās kā problēmu, faktorus par to, kas padara uzmākšanos par normu pārkāpumu, kā arī sieviešu interpretāciju un to, kā tā maina uztveri par uzmākšanos publiskās vietās. Pētījumā tika secināts, ka uzmākšanās publiskās vietās Latvijā ir aktuāla problēma, tomēr tā ir atkarīga no katras personas interpretācija…

Space-Time Forecasting of Seismic Events in Chile

The aim of this work is to study the seismicity in Chile using the ETAS (epidemic type aftershock sequences) space‐time approach. The proposed ETAS model is estimated using a semi‐parametric technique taking into account the parametric and nonparametric components corresponding to the triggered and background seismicity, respectively. The model is then used to predict the temporal and spatial intensity of events for some areas of Chile where recent large earthquakes (with magnitude greater than 8.0 M) occurred.

Electron spectra in forbidden β decays and the quenching of the weak axial-vector coupling constant gA

Evolution of the electron spectra with the effective value of the weak axial-vector coupling constant gA was followed for 26 first-, second-, third-, fourth- and fifth-forbidden β− decays of odd-A nuclei by calculating the involved nuclear matrix elements (NMEs) in the framework of the microscopic quasiparticle-phonon model (MQPM). The next-to-leading-order terms were included in the β-decay shape factor of the electron spectra. The spectrum shapes of third- and fourth-forbidden nonunique decays were found to depend strongly on the value of gA, while first- and second-forbidden decays were mostly unaffected by the tuning of gA. Metastasis to the cavernous sinus from head and neck cancer is uncommon and has been previously reported by a few authors. It is usually a late manifestation of the primary tumor and may be the first evidence of a widespread dissemination of the disease. Main clinical findings are those related with involvement of cranial nerves III to VI as they pass through the cavernous sinus. Although diagnosis may be difficult, the appearance of clinical and radiological findings of cavernous sinus involvement in a context of head and neck cancer must alert us about an intracranial metastatic infiltration. Latvijas nacionālajās tiesībās pretēji Eiropas Savienības tiesību aktiem, kas regulē jurisdikcijas noteikšanu, nav paredzētas tiesības prasītājiem celt tiesā prasību civillietā, kas attiecas uz līguma izpildi, pēc saistību izpildes vietas. Tādējādi regulās paredzēts lielāks tiesību apjoms nekā Latvijas nacionālajā likumā, līdz ar ko netiek nodrošināta efektīva kārtība jurisdikcijas noteikšanai civillietās, kurās jurisdikcija nosakāma saskaņā ar nacionālajām procesuālajām normām. Gastric metastasis from breast cancer

Introduction: Breast carcinoma is the most common malignancy in women and the main cause of tumor deaths. Despite early recognition by screening and improvement in treatment regimens, many patients will eventually develop metastases, either locoregional recurrences or distant metastases, most frequently in the skeleton, liver and lung. Metastases to the gastrointestinal tract are infrequent and not even mentioned in the major oncologic textbooks.
