Hydrological drivers of wetland vegetational biodiversity patterns within Everglades National Park, Florida
2009
The influence of hydrological dynamics on vegetational biodiversity and structuring of wetland environments is of growing interest as wetlands are modified by human alteration and the increasing threat from climate change. Hydrology has long been considered a driving force in shaping wetland communities as the frequency of inundation along with the duration and depth of flooding are key determinants of wetland structure. We attempt to link hydrological dynamics with vegetational distribution and species richness across Everglades National Park(ENP) using two publicly available datasets. The first, the Everglades Depth Estimation Network (EDEN),is a water-surface model which determines the m…

The restoration of a mosaic fragment in Betlehem’s Nativity church
2022
The fragment of mosaic, depicting one of the angels of the theory, which is located on the walls of the central nave inside the church of the Nativity in Bethlehem (Palestine…
Deep-sea Tardigrada from South Shetland Islands (Antarctica) with description of Angursa antarctica sp. nov. (Arthrotardigrada, Halechiniscidae)
1998
A new species of marine tardigrade is described coming from the muddy sediment of the Antarctic deep sea. Angursa antarctica sp. nov. is characterized by the presence of balloon-shaped primary clavae, long lateral cirri, long cephalic cirri, spines on legs I, hemispherical capsule-shaped papillae on legs IV, and short external peduncles. Geographical distribution of the genus Angursa extends to Antarctic waters, suggesting a cosmopolitan distribution for this bathyal and abyssal genus. A table comparing the main differentiating characteristics of the species of Angursa is presented.
EURO-CORDEX regional climate model simulation of precipitation on Scottish islands (1971-2000): model performance and implications for decision-makin…
2017
Due to their scale and complex topography, islands such as the Hebrides and Shetland Islands are not completely resolved by global climate models, which may impact the quality of data that can be provided about future climate in such locations. In principle, dynamical downscaling may provide helpful additional detail about future local climate. However, there is also the potential for error and uncertainty to cascade through to the regional simulation. Here, we evaluate the simulative skill of the EURO-CORDEX regional climate model ensemble on regional and local scales in the Hebrides and Shetland Islands, and consider the potential for such models to aid decision-making in island settings,…
Community structure and physiological characterization of microbial mats in Byers Peninsula, Livingston Island (South Shetland Islands, Antarctica)
2007
The community structure and physiological characteristics of three microbial mat communities in Byers Peninsula (Livingston Island, South Shetland Islands, Antarctica) were compared. One of the mats was located at the edge of a stream and was dominated by diatoms (with a thin basal layer of oscillatorian cyanobacteria), whereas the other two mats, located over moist soil and the bottom of a pond, respectively, were dominated by cyanobacteria throughout their vertical profiles. The predominant xanthophyll was fucoxanthin in the stream mat and myxoxanthophyll in the cyanobacteria-dominated mats. The sheath pigment scytonemin was absent in the stream mat but present in the soil and pond mats. …
Benthic hydroids from the south of Livingston Island (South Shetland Islands, Antarctica) collected by the Spanish Antarctic expedition Bentart 94
2006
Twenty-five species of benthic hydroids were collected during the Spanish Antarctic expedition Bentart 94 from the south of Livingston Island (Antarctica). All species are considered regarding autecology and geographical distribution. The systematic position amongst allied species is discussed when considered necessary. Antarctoscyphus asymmetricus and Symplectoscyphus nesioticus are reported for the second and the third time, respectively.

Spatial Distribution of Soil Hydrological Properties in the Kilombero Floodplain, Tanzania
2017
Analysis and interpretation of soil properties dynamics is a keystone in understanding the hydrologic responses and yield potential of floodplain wetlands. This study characterizes the distribution and spatial trends of selected soil physical properties in the Kilombero floodplain, Tanzania. A total of 76 composite soil samples were taken from 0 to 20 cm and 20 to 40 cm depth in a regular grid design across three hydrological zones, related to flooding intensity defined as fringe, middle, and riparian during the rainy season of 2015. The samples were analyzed for soil texture, bulk density, organic carbon, and saturated hydraulic conductivity. Seasonal soil moisture content was monitored at…
