Noise effect in a FitzHugh-Nagumo circuit driven by a bichromatic signal
2013
We analyze the response of a nonlinear circuit exactly ruled by the FitzHugh-Nagumo equations. This circuit is submitted to a bichromatic signal including a high frequency and a low frequency. In absence of noise, we show that for an appropriate amplitude of the high frequency driving, the response of the circuit estimated at the low frequency can be optimized via the phenomenon of vibrational resonance. Next, we show that under certain conditions, noise can contribute to the effect of vibrational resonance. Colored noise is also considered. Our experimental results are confirmed by a numerical analysis.

Mixtures identification of chemical compounds on the basis of their IR spectra by artificial intelligence
2012
Infrared (IR) spectrometric identification of individual chemical compounds from their mixtures is still a challenging process. Therefore, we developed a method in which we use the IR “Fingerprint” spectra of a particular chemical substance followed by artificial intelligence (AI) – based analysis to correctly characterise components of relatively simple chemical mixtures. We describe here the assembly of tools developed especially for this purpose as well as the artificial neural network design together with the requirements that must be met for its proper functioning. To test our approach, we used a mixture of amphetamine and creatinine which are difficult to identify in mixtures by stand…
SEAM PUCKERING EVALUATION METHOD FOR SEWING PROCESS
2014
The paper presents an automated method for the assessment and classification of puckering defects detected during the preproduction control stage of the sewing machine or product inspection. In this respect, we have presented the possible causes and remedies of the wrinkle nonconformities. Subjective factors related to the control environment and operators during the seams evaluation can be reduced using an automated system whose operation is based on image processing. Our implementation involves spectral image analysis using Fourier transform and an unsupervised neural network, the Kohonen Map, employed to classify material specimens, the input images, into five discrete degrees of quality…
The Integration of Social and Neural Synchrony : A Case for Ecologically-Valid Research Using MEG Neuroimaging
2021
The recent decade has seen a shift from artificial and environmentally-deprived experiments in neuroscience to real-life studies on multiple brains in interaction, coordination and synchrony. In these new interpersonal synchrony experiments, there has been a growing trend to employ naturalistic social interactions to evaluate mechanisms underlying synchronous neuronal communication. Here, we emphasize the importance of integrating the assessment of neural synchrony with measurement of non-verbal behavioral synchrony as expressed in various social contexts: relaxed social interactions, planning a joint pleasurable activity, conflict discussion, invocation of trauma, or support giving, and as…
The lizard cerebral cortex as a model to study neuronal regeneration
2002
The medial cerebral cortex of lizards, an area homologous to the hippocampal fascia dentata, shows delayed postnatal neurogenesis, i.e., cells in the medial cortex ependyma proliferate and give rise to immature neurons, which migrate to the cell layer. There, recruited neurons differentiate and give rise to zinc containing axons directed to the rest of cortical areas, thus resulting in a continuous growth of the medial cortex and its zinc-enriched axonal projection. This happens along the lizard life span, even in adult lizards, thus allowing one of their most important characteristics: neuronal regeneration. Experiments in our laboratory have shown that chemical lesion of the medial cortex…
Electrocatheter-mediated High-voltage Pulsed Radiofrequency of the Dorsal Root Ganglion in the Treatment of Chronic Lumbosacral Neuropathic Pain
2019
Objectives: Despite the interest in scientific community, there is still poor evidence about pulsed radiofrequency (PRF) efficacy in the treatment of neuropathic pain. In order to determine whether high-voltage PRF and epidural adhesiolysis (PRF-EA) showed better results than epidural adhesiolysis alone (EA), a randomized, double-blind, comparative-effectiveness study was conducted in patients with chronic lumbosacral radiating pain and neuropathic features. Materials and Methods: A total of 41 patients were randomly allocated to 2 groups. Twenty-one patients were randomized to receive 2 cycles of 240 seconds high-voltage PRF followed by the injection of local anesthetics, hyaluronidase, an…
Living on the edge: Meoneura obscurella in the ‘Wieliczka’ Salt Mine (southern Poland) exhibits the first case of lecithotrophic ovoviviparity in the…
2021
During the studies on the invertebrate fauna of the subterranean part of the “Wieliczka” Salt Mine in Wieliczka, Poland, the presence of many specimens of the dipteran species Meoneura obscurella (Fallén 1823) was observed. Organic remains and faeces related to the presence of mice (Mus musculus) were indicated as a potential food source for the insects. M. obscurella displays lecithotrophic viviparity (ovoviviparity), which has developed due to extremely harsh abiotic conditions and a lack of food. This is the first documented case of lecithotrophic viviparity within the fly family Carnidae. Based on the ability of this species to inhabit and reproduce in the conditions of the subterranean…
Koulutus- ja kehittämisintervention vaikutus polvinivelrikkopotilaiden lähetteiden sisältöön ja hoitolinjapäätöksiin erikoissairaanhoidossa
2013
Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli selvittää koulutus- ja kehittämisintervention vaikutusta erikoissairaanhoidon ortopedian poliklinikalle ohjautuneiden polvinivelrikkopotilaiden lähetteiden sisältöön, strukturoidun lähetteen käyttöastetta sekä koulutusintervention ja strukturoidun lähetteen vaikutusta lähetteistä seuranneisiin hoitolinjapäätöksiin. Tutkimusaineisto koostui vuosina 2007 (n=250) ja 2009 (n=237) ortopedian poliklinikalle saapuneista peräkkäisistä lähetteistä. Sisäänottokriteerinä olivat polvinivelrikkopotilaiden kiireettömän hoidon lähetteet, joista päivystyslähetteet oli poissuljettu. Vuonna 2008 Keski- Suomen sairaanhoitopiiri uudisti asiantuntijatyöryhmän kanssa polvioire…
It takes time to see the menu from the body: an experiment on stable isotope composition in freshwater crayfishes
2015
For many applications and ecological studies in which wild individuals are brought to laboratory it would be essential to know accurately how fast novel diet is reflected in composition of different tissues. To study the effects of two different diets on the stable isotope composition of freshwater crayfish muscle and hemolymph, we conducted a three month experiment on noble crayfish (Astacus astacus) and signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus) by feeding them sweet corn (Zea mays) or Baltic herring (Clupea harengus membras) as novel food. During the experiment, the crayfish were given 0.4 g of selected food daily and the amount consumed was recorded. The samples for the stable isotope a…
