An Elevated Neutrophil-Lymphocyte Ratio Increases the Risk of Cardiovascular Events and of Renal Function Decline in Hypertensive Patients with CKD

2021

Introduction: Many epidemiological studies have shown that low-grade chronic inflammation, estimated through the neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), is linked to traditional and non-traditional cardiovascular (CV) risk factors. Aim: The aim of our study was to investigate the potential prognostic role of NLR regarding the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and the development of CV events in a cohort of renal and hypertensive patients. Methods: In this retrospective observational study, 403 patients consecutively attending our Nephrology and Hypertension clinics were included. At the baseline observation and control visits in all patients, in addition to the clinical-anamnestic eval…

Dermatologic adverse events associated with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis treatment

2020

Introduction: Steroids and disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) are widely used in the treatment of juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). Dermatologic adverse events including psoriasis have been reported in treatment of various inflammatory diseases (1-3). However, data regarding the occurrence of dermatologic adverse events in JIA patients are scarce (4-6). Objectives: To determine the prevalence of dermatologic adverse events in JIA patients treated with systemic steroids and DMARDs. To investigate an association between drugs and dermatologic adverse events and the association between anti-TNF treatment and psoriasiform lesions.

Tasty Events : On Culinary Events in the Silesian Voivodeship

2015

The topic of reflection undertaken herein are public events having an evident culinary character. In the first part of her essay, the author proposes a typology of culinary events, with special focus on those events which appear in the public space the most often. Their number and considerable complexity are associated with the target participant group, the current patterns of consumption, gastronomic styles, and finally with functions which have been ascribed to those events. In the second part, she discusses selected culinary events organised in the Silesian voivodeship which have characteristic dishes (e.g. wodzionka, moczka, kołocz) associated with the local cuisine as their Leitmotif. …

Efficacy of a 12-Week Simeprevir Plus Peginterferon/Ribavirin (PR) Regimen in Treatment-Naïve Patients with Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) Genotype 4 (GT4) …

2017

Background HCV GT4 accounts for up to 20% of HCV infections worldwide. Simeprevir, given for 12 weeks as part of a 24- or 48-week combination regimen with PR is approved for the treatment of chronic HCV GT4 infection. Primary study objectives were assessment of efficacy and safety of simeprevir plus PR in treatment-naïve patients with HCV GT4 treated for 12 weeks. Primary efficacy outcome was sustained virologic response 12 weeks post-treatment (SVR12). Additional objectives included investigation of potential associations of rapid virologic response and baseline factors with SVR12. Methods This multicentre, open-label, single-arm study (NCT01846832) evaluated efficacy and safety of simepre…

“Mega-Sports Events, Gentrification and Social Mobilization in Rio de Janeiro” - Experiences from Metrô Mangueira

2017

Master's thesis Development management UT503 - University of Agder 2017 In order to promote gentrification of the city of Rio de Janeiro, the Brazilian government and the municipality of Rio de Janeiro have actively used Mega-Sports Events (MSE) in urban planning. Examples are tax cuts and the legalization of various measures for large-scale urban programs, to prepare the city for hosting these prestigious events. Whilst trying to fulfil the obligations from MSEs, the host city denies its citizens access to democratic participation and thereby their right to the city. The promises made to the international sportive federations regarding upgraded infrastructure, sportive arenas, media covera…

Stress conceptions in life event research: Towards a person‐centred perspective

1987

The present article focuses on a discussion of the theoretical foundations of life event research. Since critical life events are usually regarded as stressful events, the main question is which concepts of stress are employed in different life event approaches and what is their rationale. The discussion centres on two topics that have to be treated independently: the question of specificity vs nonspecificity and the question of individualized vs normative weightings. It is shown that different life event approaches rely on different concepts of stress. Numerous objections lead to a rejection of the nonspecificity concept and a normative proceeding. However, even when a specificity view of…

Does self-acceptance captured by life narratives and self-report predict mental health? A longitudinal multi-method approach

2019

Abstract We aimed to investigate the validity of different self-acceptance measures to predict mental health. Self-acceptance and negative life events, assessed via self-report and rated from life narratives (N = 149), served as predictors of mental health at baseline (T1) and four years later (T2). Path models showed distinguishable, complementary effects of self-reports and other-ratings. A moderate congruence of self- and other-ratings of self-acceptance was observed. Exploratory analyses revealed an association of self-acceptance with emotional words in life narratives. Controlling for negative life events, a positive link and a moderating effect of self-acceptance on mental health at T…

Expanding the Family Frame: Social Specialists, Mediated Experiences, and Gendered Images of Mobility in Transnational Wedding Videos

2021

This contribution explores the role of wedding videos in shaping transnational social relationships. Examining the production and aesthetic means of these ‘mobile images of mobility’, I show how videographers serve as ritual and social specialists to bring to the fore a fictionalized, imagined place of transnational social relationships. As evidence of ‘memory objects’ for life events, these videos form the basis for mediated experiences in transnational settings, relating those depicted to those engaging in and those watching the videos. They all become part of the social relationships that are inscribed in the video. Yet this imaginary filmic space creates gendered, contested spaces of mo…
