Rydberg Excitation of a Single Trapped Ion.

2015

We demonstrate excitation of a single trapped cold $^{40}$Ca$^+$ ion to Rydberg levels by laser radiation in the vacuum-ultraviolet at 122 nm wavelength. Observed resonances are identified as 3d$^2$D$_{3/2}$ to 51 F, 52 F and 3d$^2$D$_{5/2}$ to 64F. We model the lineshape and our results imply a large state-dependent coupling to the trapping potential. Rydberg ions are of great interest for future applications in quantum computing and simulation, in which large dipolar interactions are combined with the superb experimental control offered by Paul traps.

Zero-point excitation of a circularly moving detector in an atomic condensate and phonon laser dynamical instabilities

2020

We study a circularly moving impurity in an atomic condensate for the realisation of superradiance phenomena in tabletop experiments. The impurity is coupled to the density fluctuations of the condensate and, in a quantum field theory language, it serves as an analog of a detector for the quantum phonon field. For sufficiently large rotation speeds, the zero-point fluctuations of the phonon field induce a sizeable excitation rate of the detector even when the condensate is initially at rest in its ground state. For spatially confined condensates and harmonic detectors, such a superradiant emission of sound waves provides a dynamical instability mechanism leading to a new concept of phonon l…

Squeezing in a two-photon Dicke hamiltonian

1986

Abstract The single-mode, two-level atom Dicke hamiltonian with two-photon atom-field coupling is treated exactly and it is shown to yield a certain degree of squeezing in the field variables. This result is briefly discussed in connection with the previously shown absence of squeezing in the two-photon laser model.

Faraday patterns in low-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates

2004

We show that Faraday patterns can be excited in the weak confinement space of low-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates by temporal modulation of the trap width, or equivalently of the trap frequency Omega_tight, in the tight confinement space. For slow modulation, as compared with Omega_tight, the low-dimensional dynamics of the condensate in the weak confinement space is described by a Gross-Pitaevskii equation with time modulated nonlinearity coefficient. For increasing modulation frequencies a noticeable reduction of the pattern formation threshold is observed close to 2*Omega_tight, which is related to the parametric excitation of the internal breathing mode in the tight confinement sp…

Roton-roton crossover in strongly correlated dipolar Bose-nonstnon condensates

2011

We study the pair correlations and excitations of a dipolar Bose gas layer. The anisotropy of the dipole-dipole interaction allows us to tune the strength of pair correlations from strong to weak perpendicular and weak to strong parallel to the layer by increasing the perpendicular trap frequency. This change is accompanied by a roton-roton crossover in the spectrum of collective excitations, from a roton caused by the head-to-tail attraction of dipoles to a roton caused by the side-by-side repulsion, while there is no roton excitation for intermediate trap frequencies. We discuss the nature of these two kinds of rotons and the relation to instabilities of dipolar Bose gases. In both regime…

Density as a constraint and the separation of internal excitation energy in TDHF

1985

We present a fast and efficient constrained Hartree-Fock iteration scheme which constraints the complete density distribution to remain constant. The scheme is particularly suited to a coordinate- or momentum-space representation. The technique is applied to separate the collective and the internal energy in a propagating TDHF state. We study the behavior of these two energies in an16O+16O collision.

Thermal-, pressure- and light-induced spin-crossover behviour in the two-dimensional Hofman-like coordination polymer [Fe(3-Clpy)2Pd(CN)4]

2013

The thermal spin-crossover behaviour, photoexcitation and subsequent relaxation, as well as the pressure-induced spincrossover behaviour at 298 K are discussed for the non-porous two-dimensional Hofmann-like coordination polymer [Fe(3-Clpy)(2)Pd(CN)(4)] (1). The title compound undergoes a two-step, cooperative thermal-induced SCO with critical temperatures T-c1(down arrow) = 159.6 K and T-c1(up arrow) = 164.5 K for the first step and T-c2(down arrow) = 141.4 K and T-c2(up arrow) = 148.4 K for the second step. Irradiation of the low-spin state with green light (514 nm) at 10 K induced the photoexcitation of around 60% of the iron(II) centres to the high-spin state (LIESST effect). The subseq…

Structure of low-lying states in 140Sm studied by Coulomb excitation

2016

The electromagnetic structure of 140Sm was studied in a low-energy Coulomb excitation experiment with a radioactive ion beam from the REX-ISOLDE facility at CERN. The 2+ and 4+ states of the ground-state band and a second 2+ state were populated by multistep excitation. The analysis of the differential Coulomb excitation cross sections yielded reduced transition probabilities between all observed states and the spectroscopic quadrupole moment for the 2+ 1 state. The experimental results are compared to large-scale shell model calculations and beyond-mean-field calculations based on the Gogny D1S interaction with a five-dimensional collective Hamiltonian formalism. Simpler geometric and alge…
