JYFLTRAP: a cylindrical Penning trap for isobaric beam purification at IGISOL

2004

Abstract A Penning trap has been installed for isobaric beam purification at the IGISOL-facility at the University of Jyvaskyla. In this paper, the technical details of this new device together with results of the first tests are presented. The mass resolving power, depending on the excitation parameters and the ion species, can be as high as 145 000 and the total transmission has been determined to be 17%. In addition, it is shown that with this experimental setup it is possible to measure atomic masses up to A=120 with accuracies of approximately 50 keV .

A finite number of regular rotational bands in the superdeformed well of 143Eu

1995

Abstract The number of excited superdeformed bands in 143 Eu is measured by use of the Fluctuation Analysis Method. Between 10 and 40 rotational bands, displaying typical rotational energy correlations over two consecutive transitions, are populated within a rather narrow range in transition energy, E γ ≈ 1300–1500 keV. These numbers are close to the values found for normally deformed nuclei and agree with microscopic cranking + band mixing calculations for the specific superdeformed nucleus, which predict the onset of rotational damping to occur at the excitation energy U 0 = 1.3–1.6 MeV above the yrast line.

Evidence for a two-phonon octupole vibrational state in208Pb

1992

Collective properties of206,208Pb have been investigated with gamma-ray spectroscopy using nuclear and electromagnetic excitation by208Pb projectiles. From the measurement of particle-particle-γ and particle-particle-γ γ coincidences a new energy level in208Pb at 5.683 MeV was observed and the data suggest an interpretation as a 2-phonon octupole vibrational state with spin 4+ or 6+. For this state one finds the same dynamical deformation parameterβ3 as for the first-excited collective 3− state. The results are compared to predictions of models which consider, in particular, the aspects of the quadrupole interaction and the interaction of the 2-particle pairing vibration with the 2-phonon o…

$\beta$ - decay of the M$_{T}$=-1 nucleus $^{58}$Zn studied by selective laser ionization

1998

$\beta$ - decay of $^{58}$Zn has been studied for the first time. A new laser ion-source concept has been used to produce mass-separated sources for $\beta$ and $\gamma$ - spectroscopy. The half-life of $^{58}$Zn was determined to be 86(18) ms. Comparisons are made with previous data from charge-exchange reactions. Our Gamow-Teller strength to the 1$^{+}$ state at 1051 keV excitation in $^{58}$Cu agrees well with the value extracted from a recent ($^{3}$He, t) study. Extensive shell-model calculations are presented.

First observation of excited states in $^{197}$At: the onset of deformation in neutron-deficient astatine nuclei

1999

Excited states in the Z= 85 nucleus 197At have been identified for the first time using the recoil-decay-tagging (RDT) technique. The excitation energy of these states is found to be consistent with the systematics of neutron-deficient astatine nuclei and with theoretical calculations indicating that the nucleus may be deformed in its ground state.

Transfer reactions in inverse kinematics, an experimental approach for fission investigations

2013

Inelastic and multi-nucleon transfer reactions between a $^{238}$U beam, accelerated at 6.14 MeV/u, and a $^{12}$C target were used for the production of neutron-rich, fissioning systems from U to Cm. A Si telescope, devoted to the detection of the target-like nuclei, provided a characterization of the fissioning systems in atomic and mass numbers, as well as in excitation energy. Cross-sections, angular and excitation-energy distributions were measured for the inelastic and transfer channels. Possible excitations of the target-like nuclei were experimentally investigated for the first time, by means of g -ray measurements. The decays from the first excited states of $^{12}$C, $^{11}$B and …

Observation of mass-asymmetric fission of mercury nuclei in heavy ion fusion

2015

Background: Mass-asymmetric fission has been observed in low energy fission of $^{180}\mathrm{Hg}$. Calculations predicted the persistence of asymmetric fission in this region even at excitation energies of 30--40 MeV.Purpose: To investigate fission mass distributions by populating different isotopes of Hg using heavy ion fusion reactions. Methods: Fission fragment mass-angle distributions have been measured for two reactions, $^{40}\mathrm{Ca}+^{142}\mathrm{Nd}$ and $^{13}\mathrm{C}+^{182}\mathrm{W}$, populating $^{182}\mathrm{Hg}$ and $^{195}\mathrm{Hg}$, respectively, using the Heavy Ion Accelerator Facility and CUBE spectrometer at the Australian National University. Measurements were ma…
