Virtual Compton scattering off the nucleon in chiral perturbation theory

1996

We investigate the spin-independent part of the virtual Compton scattering (VCS) amplitude off the nucleon within the framework of chiral perturbation theory. We perform a consistent calculation to third order in external momenta according to Weinberg's power counting. With this calculation we can determine the second- and fourth-order structure-dependent coefficients of the general low-energy expansion of the spin-averaged VCS amplitude based on gauge invariance, crossing symmetry and the discrete symmetries. We discuss the kinematical regime to which our calculation can be applied and compare our expansion with the multipole expansion by Guichon, Liu and Thomas. We establish the connectio…

〈VAP〉 Green function in the resonance region

2004

Abstract We analyze the 〈 V A P 〉 three-point function of vector, axial-vector and pseudoscalar currents. In the spirit of large N C , a resonance dominated Green function is confronted with the leading high-energy behaviour from the operator product expansion. The matching is shown to be fully compatible with a chiral resonance Lagrangian and it allows to determine some of the chiral low-energy constants of O ( p 6 ) .

Unduland universe: expansion with alternating eras of acceleration and deceleration

2005

If the equation of state for 'dark energy' varies periodically, the expansion of the Universe may have undergone alternating eras of acceleration and deceleration. We examine a specific form that survives existing observational tests, does not single out the present state of the Universe as exceptional, and suggests a future much like the matter-dominated past: a smooth expansion without a final inflationary epoch.

A new representation of the Adler function for lattice QCD

2013

We address several aspects of lattice QCD calculations of the hadronic vacuum polarization and the associated Adler function. We implement a representation derived previously which allows one to access these phenomenologically important functions for a continuous set of virtualities, irrespective of the flavor structure of the current. Secondly we present a theoretical analysis of the finite-size effects on our particular representation of the Adler function, based on the operator product expansion at large momenta and on the spectral representation of the Euclidean correlator at small momenta. Finally, an analysis of the flavor structure of the electromagnetic current correlator is perform…

Three-body Coulomb interaction effects in the final state of thePb208(B8,Be7p)Pb208Coulomb breakup reaction

2005

The photodissociation reaction $^{8}\mathrm{B}+\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}^{7}\mathrm{Be}+p$ is used to provide information on the astrophysical ${S}_{17}$ factor of the inverse radiative capture reaction, knowledge of which is crucial for an estimation of the high-energy neutrino flux from the sun. Since, at present, the Coulomb field of a fully stripped nucleus serves as the source of the photons, an adequate analysis requires a genuine three-body treatment of this reaction. Among the uncertainties still affecting present analyses, the possible modification of the dissociation cross section by the post-decay acceleration of the fragments $^{7}\mathrm{Be}$ and p in the targ…

One-loop calculation of the oblique S parameter in higgsless electroweak models

2012

We present a one-loop calculation of the oblique S parameter within Higgsless models of electroweak symmetry breaking and analyze the phenomenological implications of the available electroweak precision data. We use the most general effective Lagrangian with at most two derivatives, implementing the chiral symmetry breaking SU(2)_L x SU(2)_R -> SU(2)_{L+R} with Goldstones, gauge bosons and one multiplet of vector and axial-vector massive resonance states. Using the dispersive representation of Peskin and Takeuchi and imposing the short-distance constraints dictated by the operator product expansion, we obtain S at the NLO in terms of a few resonance parameters. In asymptotically-free gauge …

Multipole strength inC12from the (e,e’α) reaction for momentum transfers up to 0.61fm−1

1995

We have excited the giant resonance region in $^{12}\mathrm{C}$ via inelastic electron scattering, and have measured the first complete angular correlations for charged particle emission for this reaction for four values of momentum transfer ranging from 0.24 ${\mathrm{fm}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$ to 0.61 ${\mathrm{fm}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$. By analyzing the \ensuremath{\alpha}-emission channels via the Legendre and resonance formalisms, we unambiguously determined the multipole contributions to the total cross section for \ensuremath{\alpha} emission to the ground state of $^{8}\mathrm{Be}$, and have set limits on these contributions for \ensuremath{\alpha} emission to the first…

Laser spectroscopy for nuclear structure physics

2016

High-resolution laser spectroscopy is an established powerful tool in the study of nuclear shape, size and multipole moments. Measurements of the hyperfine structures and isotope shifts in the atomic spectra of radioactive nuclei provide unique insight into the evolution of the nuclear macroscopic shape and microscopic structure. These measurements can be made with high precision and high sensitivity and applied directly on-line at radioactive nuclear beam facilities. Recent measurements, advances at facilities and the future direction of the field are reviewed. A summary of experimental data is presented. peerReviewed

General Multipole Expansion of Polarization Observables in Deuteron Electrodisintegration

2002

Formal expressions are derived for the multipole expansion of the structure functions of a general polarization observable of exclusive electrodisintegration of the deuteron using a longitudinally polarized beam and/or an oriented target. This allows one to exhibit explicitly the angular dependence of the structure functions by expanding them in terms of the small rotation matrices $d^j_{m'm}(\theta)$, whose coefficients are given in terms of the electromagnetic multipole matrix elements. Furthermore, explicit expressions for the coefficients of the angular distributions of the differential cross section including multipoles up to $L_{max}=3$ are listed in tabular form.
