General Multipole Expansion of Polarization Observables in Deuteron Electrodisintegration

2002

Formal expressions are derived for the multipole expansion of the structure functions of a general polarization observable of exclusive electrodisintegration of the deuteron using a longitudinally polarized beam and/or an oriented target. This allows one to exhibit explicitly the angular dependence of the structure functions by expanding them in terms of the small rotation matrices $d^j_{m'm}(\theta)$, whose coefficients are given in terms of the electromagnetic multipole matrix elements. Furthermore, explicit expressions for the coefficients of the angular distributions of the differential cross section including multipoles up to $L_{max}=3$ are listed in tabular form.

Clinical characteristics of patients with familial amyotrophic lateral sclerosis carrying the pathogenic GGGGCC hexanucleotide repeat expansion of C9…

2012

A large hexanucleotide (GGGGCC) repeat expansion in the first intron of C9ORF72, a gene located on chromosome 9p21, has been recently reported to be responsible for 40% of familial amyotrophic lateral sclerosis cases of European ancestry. The aim of the current article was to describe the phenotype of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis cases carrying the expansion by providing a detailed clinical description of affected cases from representative multi-generational kindreds, and by analysing the age of onset, gender ratio and survival in a large cohort of patients with familial amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. We collected DNA and analysed phenotype data for 141 index Italian familial amyotrophic l…

Experimental study of a naturally weathered stiff clay

2016

Studying the shear strength of a naturally weathered clay is important to understand rain-induced slope failures in weathered soils. However, experimental studies on naturally weathered soils are limited. The paper focuses on the laboratory experimental investigation carried out to analyse the shear strength of a naturally weathered stiff clay that can be found in unsaturated conditions in situ. This has an important practical relevance in the evaluation of the stability conditions of natural slopes at clay outcrops. Different experimental techniques of suction measurement were used to obtain the soil-water retention curve of the clay over a wide range of suctions. Scanning electronic micr…

Where is the line? Phylogeography and secondary contact of western Palearctic coal tits (Periparus ater: Aves, Passeriformes, Paridae)

2013

In this study, a phylogeographic scenario of the coal tit (Periparus ater) was reconstructed based on a fragment of the mitochondrial control region, and within- and between-population genetic diversity was analysed with a focus on the western Palearctic breeding range. We inferred a first pan-European delimitation of a postulated secondary contact zone among coal tits from the north-eastern Palearctic ater subspecies group and those from the south-western Palearctic abietum group. Generally, between-population differentiation was greatest in the Mediterranean range, which was explained by a greater separation in multiple Pleistocene refuge areas compared to the lower differentiation across…

tau -> pi pi pi nu(tau) decays and the a(1)(1260) off-shell width revisited

2009

The tau -> pi pi pi nu(tau) decay is driven by the hadronization of the axial-vector current. Within the resonance chiral theory, and considering the large-N-C expansion, this process has been studied in Ref. [1] (D. Gomez Dumm, A. Pich, J. Portoles, 2004). In the light of later developments we revise here this previous work by including a new off-shell width for the lightest a(1) resonance that provides a good description of the tau -> pi pi pi nu(tau) spectrum and branching ratio. We also consider the role of the rho(1450) resonance in these observables. Thus we bring in an overall description of the tau -> pi pi pi nu(tau) process in excellent agreement with our present experimental know…

Metallic interconnects for solid oxide fuel cell: Effect of water vapour on oxidation resistance of differently coated alloys

2009

International audience; The need of interconnect to separate fuel and oxidant gasses and connect individual cells into electrical series in a SOFC stack appears as one of the most important point in fuel cell technology. Due to their high electrical and thermal conductivities, thermal expansion compatibility with the other cell components and lowcost, ferritic stainless steels (FSS) are nowconsidered to be among the most promising candidate materials as interconnects in SOFC stacks. Despite the formation at 800 ◦C of a protective chromia Cr2O3 scale, it can transform in volatile chromium species, leading to the lost of its protectiveness and then the degradation of the fuel cell. A previous…

Characterization and Tuning of Ultra High Gradient Permanent Magnet Quadrupoles

2009

The application of quadrupole devices with high field gradients and small apertures requires precise control over higher order multipole field components. We present a new scheme for performance control and tuning, which allows the illumination of most of the quadrupole device aperture because of the reduction of higher order field components. Consequently, the size of the aperture can be minimized to match the beam size achieving field gradients of up to $500\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{T}\text{ }{\mathrm{m}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ at good imaging quality. The characterization method based on a Hall probe measurement and a Fourier analysis was confirmed using the high quality electron beam at the M…

THE OPERATOR PRODUCT EXPANSION OF THE QCD PROPAGATORS

1992

We bring together for the first time the coefficients in covariant gauges of all the condensates of dimension four or less in the operator product expansion (OPE) of the quark, gluon and ghost propagators. It is stressed that contrary to general belief the condensates do not enter the OPE of the propagators in gauge-invariant combinations like [Formula: see text] and 〈G2〉. The results are presented in arbitrary dimension to lowest order in the light quark masses for the SU (Nc) internal symmetry group. All terms which, through the equations of motion, may be viewed as being effectively of order αs are included. The importance of the equations of motion if one is to fulfill the Slavnov-Tayl…

Regional Policy Lessons from Finland

2005

The Finnish economy and society has long been dominated by primary production. Post-war economic development was rapid and welfare gaps between the much more developed economies and Finland narrowed and were even partly reversed. Rapid economic expansion together with structural change has had the effect of centralizing both economic activity and population. The trend has been towards the southern and central regions where the metropolitan area of Helsinki and most of the other larger towns and urban centres are located. Together with vigorous technological progress in agriculture and forestry the rapid urbanization and industrialization of the 1960s and 1970s the fastest in Europe altered …
