Sort and beer: Everything you wanted to know about the sorting task but did not dare to ask

2011

author cannot archive publisher's version/PDF; International audience; In industries, the sensory characteristics of products are key points to control. The method commonly used to characterize and describe products is the conventional profile. This very efficient method requires a lot of time to train assessors and to teach them how to quantify the sensory characteristics of interest. Over the last few years, other faster and less restricting methods have been developed, such as free choice profile, flash profile, projective mapping or sorting tasks. Among these methods, the sorting task has recently become quite popular in sensory evaluation because of its simplicity: it only requires ass…

Online Multi-Person Tracking by Tracker Hierarchy

2012

Tracking-by-detection is a widely used paradigm for multi-person tracking but is affected by variations in crowd density, obstacles in the scene, varying illumination, human pose variation, scale changes, etc. We propose an improved tracking-by-detection framework for multi-person tracking where the appearance model is formulated as a template ensemble updated online given detections provided by a pedestrian detector. We employ a hierarchy of trackers to select the most effective tracking strategy and an algorithm to adapt the conditions for trackers' initialization and termination. Our formulation is online and does not require calibration information. In experiments with four pedestrian t…

Improved Statistically Based Retrievals via Spatial-Spectral Data Compression for IASI Data

2019

In this paper, we analyze the effect of spatial and spectral compression on the performance of statistically based retrieval. Although the quality of the information is not com- pletely preserved during the coding process, experiments reveal that a certain amount of compression may yield a positive impact on the accuracy of retrievals. We unveil two strategies, both with interesting benefits: either to apply a very high compression, which still maintains the same retrieval performance as that obtained for uncompressed data; or to apply a moderate to high compression, which improves the performance. As a second contribution of this paper, we focus on the origins of these benefits. On the one…

From beverage to companion food: Experts' principles for pairing wines and beers with food

2016

Projet "Associations entre bières et mets : de la perception au jugement des consommateurs en situation réelle de consommation".; Pairing beverages and dishes is part of culinary tradition. The objective is to identify the principles used by experts for pairing. Ten sommeliers and ten beer experts were presented with the description of a drink, either beer or wine. They were asked to suggest dishes to match the drink and explaining their choices. They performed the task with two beers and two wines. Both perceptual and conceptual principles are reported, the former being the most often used. Overall, 10 perceptual principles were identified. They intend to either reinforce the quality of th…

The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child's Role in Litigation Before the Committee of Experts of the African Children's Charter

2020

On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, this article contributes to a reflection about the Convention's impact on domestic and international case law by investigating its role in, and implications for, litigation before the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child. To this end, the analysis starts by tracing the core aspects of the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child, and by comparing its content to that of the UN Convention. It then investigates the extent to which, in its practice, the African Committee has engaged with (or, indeed, ignored or overlooked) the UN Convention, and critically assess…

Commonalities between ENT Specialists and Oral Medicine Experts: Old HPV Diseases and New Oral HPV-Cancer along the Borders

2021

A human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is globally one of the most common causes of sexually transmitted infections of the mucous membranes (genital, anal and oral). Over the last decade, an increasing number of young patients have been infected due to the changes in sexual habits in the general population. The majority of the lesions are benign; however, substantial scientific evidence has suggested a role for the HPV family in the carcinogenesis of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). It is proposed that dentists, in addition to ENT specialists, should apply standardized management protocols in order to construct a well-defined pathway in terms of diagnosis, which is based on a PCR diagnostic t…

Channel Gain Cartography via Mixture of Experts

2020

In order to estimate the channel gain (CG) between the locations of an arbitrary transceiver pair across a geographic area of interest, CG maps can be constructed from spatially distributed sensor measurements. Most approaches to build such spectrum maps are location-based, meaning that the input variable to the estimating function is a pair of spatial locations. The performance of such maps depends critically on the ability of the sensors to determine their positions, which may be drastically impaired if the positioning pilot signals are affected by multi-path channels. An alternative location-free approach was recently proposed for spectrum power maps, where the input variable to the maps…
