Manganese (Mn) has been associated with embryo toxicity as it impairs differentiation of neural and skeletogenic cells in vertebrates. Nevertheless, information on the mechanisms operating at the cellular level remains scant. We took advantage of an amenable embryonic model to investigate the effects of Mn in biomineral formation. This review discusses examples of conserved cellular and molecular mechansims in development, including the pathway of signal transduction between the photoreceptors R8 and R7 in Drosophila, which is compared to vulval induction in Caenorhabditis elegans. Abstract In an attempt to investigate cellular fibronectin synthesis and deposition during acute liver damage and fibrogenesis, we used the presence of the additional type III-related ED-A domain of cellular fibronectin as a characteristic for distinguishing it from the plasma form. Using site-specific antibodies, we localized cellular fibronectin deposition in the necrotic pericentral areas of acutely damaged liver tissue after a single CCl 4 -gavage, whereas in control liver only trace amounts of cellular fibronectin were detectable along the sinusoids. Summary The influence of light quantity on the steady-state levels of plastid encoded transcripts was examined during the development of primary leaves from mustard ( Sinapis alba ) plants. RbcL mRNA, petA mRNA, and psbA mRNA, which encode the large subunit (LSU) of Rubisco, Cyt f of the Cyt b6/f complex, and D1 protein of PS II were investigated in leaves grown under high-light (HL) or low-light (LL) conditions. Additionally, the nuclear encoded 25 S rRNA was quantified. Reverse-transcription polymerase chain reactions (RT-PCR) demonstrated NOS III mRNA, but no NOS II mRNA (which is short-lived) and no NOS I mRNA in platelets. Immunofluorescent staining of human bone marrow smears showed the presence of NOS III, but not NOS I in megakaryocytes. A subpopulation of megakaryocytes also expressed NOS II.
