The effect of pH and nitrite concentration on the activity of the nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB) in an activated sludge reactor has been determined by means of laboratory batch experiments based on respirometric techniques. The bacterial activity was measured at different pH and at different total nitrite concentrations (TNO 2). The experimental results showed that the nitrite oxidation rate (NOR) depends on the TNO 2 concentration independently of the free nitrous acid (FNA) concentration, so FNA cannot be considered as the real substrate for NOB. ABSTRACT Methanoculleus bourgensis , of the order Methanomicrobiales , is a dominant methanogenic archaeon in many biogas-producing reactor systems fed with renewable primary products. It is capable of synthesizing methane via the hydrogenotrophic pathway utilizing hydrogen and carbon dioxide or formate as the substrates. Here we report the complete and finished genome sequence of M. bourgensis strain MS2 T , isolated from a sewage sludge digester.

Abstract Alcoholic fermentation is one of the main phases in wine production. It is usually conducted by yeasts belonging to the species Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Industrial S. cerevisiae strains are highly specialized organisms, which have evolved to utilize to their full potential the different environments or ecological niches. So, during the alcoholic fermentation, the yeast has been adapted to different kinds of stress conditions; this adaptation is call “domestication”. In this review, we describe the different mechanisms involved in the adaptive evolution of wine yeast strains.

Fermented foods are frequently contaminated by histamine that is generated by microorganisms with histidine decarboxylase activity. The ingestion of large amounts of histamine can cause serious toxicological problems in humans. A study of the effects of histamine, histidine, and growth phase on histamine production by lactic acid bacteria isolated from wine is reported here. With northern blots and specific activity analysis, we observed that histidine induces the expression of the histidine decarboxylase gene (hdc) and that histamine causes a decrease in the expression of this gene. Abstract This work proposes a correlation for the specific capital cost of multi-effect distillation (MED) plants, considering their main design options and parameters, such as the number of effects, size/capacity, and heat source temperature. These parameters are varied within a large range to cover as many different cases as possible. The cost correlation decouples the evaporator cost and includes in the expression the ratio of the heat exchanger area to a reference one. Application of small angle neutron scattering to micellar fluids

Abstract In this paper we present a short overview of the application of small angle neutron scattering (SANS) to micellar fluids. In the first part of the paper a general expression of the scattering equation is derived, with particular emphasis on the approximations involved and on their practical consequences. In the second part of the paper we present six selected test cases (such as mono- and polydisperse fluids, critical fluids, shapes other than spherical, etc.) taken from our own work, to demonstrate the kind of analysis performed in each case to extract the information from SANS data.

Peak capacity (PC) is a key concept in chromatographic analysis, nowadays of great importance for characterising complex separations as a criterion to find the most promising conditions. A theoretical expression for PC estimation can be easily deduced in isocratic elution, provided that the column plate count is assumed constant for all analytes. In gradient elution, the complex dependence of peak width with the gradient program implies that an integral equation has to be solved, which is only possible in a limited number of situations. Radiant field distribution is an important modeling issue in many systems of practical interest, such as photo-bioreactors for algae growth and heterogeneous photo-catalytic reactors for water detoxification.In this work, a simple radiant field model suitable for dispersed systems showing particle size distributions, is proposed for both dilute and dense two-phase systems.
