Impacts of wood extraction on soil: assessing rutting and soil compaction caused by skidding and forwarding by means of traditional and innovative me…
2021
AbstractIntensive forestry operations may cause soil compaction, plastic soil disturbances and rutting, which are responsible for undesirable effects on soils, vegetation and water bodies. Despite the numerous studies aimed to identify the main factors affecting soil damages, it still remains unclear whether wood extraction methods and driving direction (uphill or downhill) may affect the impacts of forest machines. This research analyses soil compaction and soil penetration resistance as well as rutting from forwarding and skidding using the same farm tractor in up- and downhill wood extraction. Rutting was estimated by 3D soil reconstruction derived by portable laser scanning (PLS) and cl…
[Environment and health in Gela (Sicily): present knowledge and prospects for future studies]-Indoor air quality: an environmental and health priority
2009
The study area includes the Municipalities of Gela, Niscemi and Butera located in the South of Sicily, Italy. In 1990 it was declared Area at High Risk of Environmental Crisis. In 2000 part of it was designated as Gela Reclamation Site of National Interest, RSNI. The site includes a private industrial area, public and marine areas, for a total of 51 km(2). Gela populationin 2008 was 77,145 (54,774 in 1961). Sea level:46 m. Total area: 276 km(2). Grid reference: 37 degrees 4' 0" N, 14 degrees 15' 0" E. Niscemi and Butera are located border to Gela. Populations are respectively 26,541 and 5,063. Sea level respectively: 332 m and 402 m. Close to the city of Gela, the industrial area, operating…
Multi-objective DSE algorithms' evaluations on processor optimization
2013
Very complex micro-architectures, like complex superscalar/SMT or multicore systems, have lots of configurations. Exploring this huge design space and trying to optimize multiple objectives, like performance, power consumption and hardware complexity is a real challenge. In this paper, using the multi-objective design space exploration tool FADSE, we tried to optimize the hardware parameters of the complex superscalar Grid ALU Processor. We compared how different heuristic algorithms handle the DSE optimization. Three of these algorithms are taken from the jMetal library (NSGAII, SPEA2 and SMPSO) while the other two, CNSGAII and MOHC were implemented by us. We show that in this huge design …
Outdoor performance of north-facing multicrystalline modules in Southern Norway
2012
The present paper deals with reports on an outdoor performance evaluation of multicrystalline modules facing north in Southern Norway. The relevance of this study is mainly for building integrated systems where some of the facades are in a far from optimum position. The impact of shading on the photovoltaic modules' performance is also evaluated. A dedicated experimental set up has been created to study the PV modules performance under the above mentioned conditions. The results indicate significant power extraction from the PV modules even in the north facing direction. Effects of shadowing are also considered.
Hydrogen and methane yields of untreated, water-extracted and acid (HCl) treated maize in one- and two-stage batch assays
2011
Abstract In the present study, two-stage H 2 and CH 4 production was compared with one-stage CH 4 production from maize subjected to water extraction and acid (HCl) treatment. In addition, the effect of duration (2 and 14 days) of the first-stage H 2 process on the H 2 yields and subsequent CH 4 yields from the second-stage was also investigated. Results showed that the average H 2 yields from untreated maize were 5.6 and 9.9 ml/g volatile solids added (VS added ) after 2 and 14 days, respectively. On the other hand, H 2 yields from water-extracted and HCl-treated maize were 18.0 and 20.5 ml/gVS added (14 d), respectively. On comparison to one-stage CH 4 assays, the average increase in CH 4…
“Ice” juice from apples obtained by pressing at subzero temperatures of apples pretreated by pulsed electric fields
2016
Abstract The impact of apple pretreatment by pulsed electric field (PEF) on juice extraction using the freezing-assisted pressing was studied. Apple discs were PEF pretreated at electric field strength of E = 800 V/cm and then air blast frozen inside the freezer (− 40 °C). Then, pressing experiments in a laboratory-pressing chamber (2–5 bars) were started at sub-zero temperature (− 5 °C). Time evolution of juice yield and its nutritional qualities were compared for PEF and untreated apple samples. High improvements of juice yield were obtained for freeze-thawed (FT) and PEF + FT samples. The combination of PEF + pressing (5 bar) at sub-zero temperature gave optimum results for juice extrac…
3D chain interactive
2014
With constant evolution of technology, 3D scanners are providing more and more data with ever greater precision. However, the substantial increase of the data size is problematic. Files become very heavy and can cause problems in data transmission or data storage. Therefore, most of the time, the data obtained by the 3d scanners will be analyzed, processed and simplify; this is called 3D acquisition chain. This manuscript presents an approach which digitize objects dynamically by adapting point density during the acquisition depending on the object complexity, without informations on object shape. This system allows to avoid the use of the classic 3D chain. This system do not calculate a den…
Structural Knowledge Extraction from Mobility Data
2016
Knowledge extraction has traditionally represented one of the most interesting challenges in AI; in recent years, however, the availability of large collections of data has increased the awareness that “measuring” does not seamlessly translate into “understanding”, and that more data does not entail more knowledge. We propose here a formulation of knowledge extraction in terms of Grammatical Inference (GI), an inductive process able to select the best grammar consistent with the samples. The aim is to let models emerge from data themselves, while inference is turned into a search problem in the space of consistent grammars, induced by samples, given proper generalization operators. We will …
Sulfonation of Triphenylphosphines and Separation of Sulfonated Triphenylphosphines by Crystallization and Solvent Extraction
2007
Abstract The effect of sulfonation conditions on the formation of sulfonated triphenylphosphines and their separation from the post‐reaction mixture, containing concentrated sulphuric acid, was studied. The solvent extraction was found to be a suitable technique to separate sulfonated triphenylphosphines from concentrated sulphuric acid, and the purity and yield was higher than obtained by crystallization from various solvents. Tributyl phosphate was a suitable extractant. Sodium salts of sulfonated triphenylphosphines could then be recovered as precipitates by treating the organic phase with the sodium hydroxide solution and separation by crystallization. The solvent extraction simplified …
Development of New Cationic Exchangers for the Recovery of Uranium (VI) from Concentrated Phosphoric Acid
2013
The extraction of uranium (VI) from 5.3 mol.L−1 phosphoric acid with a series of phosphoric, phosphinic, dithiophosphoric, or dithiophosphinic acid derivatives (0.5 mol.L−1) in mixture with 0.125 mol.L−1 TOPO in Isane IP 185 has been investigated. In the frame of the present work, eight acidic phosphorus and thiophosphorus compounds have been synthesized: bis(1,3-diisobutoxypropan-2-yl) phosphoric acid, bis(1,3-bis-(butylthio)propan-2-yl) phosphoric acid, bis(5,8,12,15-tetraoxanonadecan-10-yl) phosphoric acid, bis(1-butoxyheptan-2-yl) phosphoric acid, bis(undecan-6-yl) phosphoric acid, bis(2-(1,3-dibutoxypropan-2-yloxy)ethyl) phosphoric acid, bis(3-butoxy-2-(butoxymethyl)-2-methylpropyl) ph…
