A 65-year-old man presented with a history of type 2 diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and non-alcoholic fatty liver. He had had no injuries to, or operations on his neck, but had had right submandibular and retroauricular pain for years. Computed tomography with 3-dimensional reconstruction (Figs. 1 and 2) showed elongation of both styloid processes associated with pseudoarticulation of the hyoid bone on the right side. This confirmed the complete ossification of the stylohyoid ligament, but the patient did not want an operation to resolve it. Beagle dog is a standard animal model for evaluating nonclinical pharmacokinetics of new drug candidates. Glucuronidation in intestine and liver is an important first-pass drug metabolic pathway, especially for phenolic compounds. This study evaluated the glucuronidation characteristics of several 7-hydroxycoumarin derivatives in beagle dog's intestine and liver in vitro. Total gastrectomy was performed on purebred beagle dogs and a 30--40 cm jejunal segment was grafted isoperistaltically between oesophagus and duodenum. Histological and histoautoradiographical examinations were carried out and the wall-thickness and the cell-transformation rate in the interponate determined. Despite the isoperistaltic substitute-stomach a muscular wall-hypertrophy of 140% of the interponated jejunum was found. The reason for this hypertrophy is thought to be the result of adhesions and the functional mechanical demands. The snowy owl (Bubo scandiacus) is a nomadic species with a circumpolar distribution. It has recently declined in the western Palearctic and may thus be worthy of special consideration for conservation. We investigated genetic structure in three well separated geographic regions within the snowy owls’ breeding range. We sequenced two mitochondrial genes; the control region and cytochrome b, and two Z-chromosome introns; VLDLR-9 and BRM-15. We found no phylogeographic structure among the sampled regions, indicating high levels of gene flow in the recent past and possibly still today. The effect of long-term excercise on the intervertebral disc collagen concentration (hydroxyproline), collagen-synthesizing enzymes (prolyl-4-hydroxylase, PH, and galactosyl-hydroxylysyl glucosyltransferase, GGT) and hydroxypyridinium crosslinks was studied in ten female beagle dogs. The dogs were run on a treadmill for 1 year starting at the age of 15 weeks. The daily running distance was gradually increased to 40km, which distance the dogs ran for the final 15 weeks. The Secret Lives of the Brain (2011), y se plantean objeciones a sus tesis ontológicas. Luego se expone el enfoque fenomenológico del problema mente-cuerpo defendido por Paul Ricoeur en su debate con el neurocientífico Jean-Pierre Changeaux (Ce qui nous fait penser. La nature et la régle, (1998). Finalmente, se definen ambas posiciones por referencia al cartesianismo.
