Fabry disease is an X-linked lysosomal storage disorder characterized by multi-organ dysfunction, including hearing loss - mainly sensorineural. The recent introduction of enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) has resulted in improvements in renal and cardiac function, pain and quality of life. One study has also suggested small improvements in high-frequency hearing. In this paper, we study the effect of ERT on hearing in patients in the Europe-wide database - the Fabry Outcome Survey (FOS). Twenty-six patients in FOS had pure-tone audiometry performed up to 6 months before starting ERT with agalsidase alpha and after a median of 12 months of treatment. Centrifuge tests on strip footings on sand with a weak layer

Tests on small-scale physical models of a strip footing resting on a dense sand bed containing a thin horizontal weak soil layer were carried out at normal gravity (1 g ). The results, reported in a companion paper, point out that the weak layer plays an important role in the failure mechanism and the ultimate bearing capacity of the footing if it falls within the ground volume relevant to the behaviour of the sand–footing system. The same problem was also investigated by means of centrifuge tests on reduced-scale models at 25 g and 40 g . Bioactive Glass-Ceramics in Middle Ear Surgery An 8-Year Review

An 8-year follow-up of Ceravital middle ear prostheses showed there was extremely good tolerance in the middle ear space. Incompatibility phenomena were not observed, and inflammatory reactions were neither caused nor supported by the implants. The tympanoplasties were always performed without interposition of cartilage between the tympanic membrane or the tympanic membrane graft and the disk-shaped portion of the implant, and extrusions were never observed. The practicability of the bioactive glass ceramic Cernvitnl® in ear surgery was tested in animals. The histological findings are presented. Over the last 3 years implants of bioactive glass ceramic were used in humans. Prostheses for the total or partial reconstruction of the ossicular chain and the reconstruction of the bony wall of the outer ear canal were fashioned. We have conducted about 300 tympanoplasties and 60 total or partial reconstructions of the bony wall of the outer ear canal. The otoscopic and functional results were satisfactory.

In 1987 and 1988 Nickisch et al. discussed the effect of infusions of prednisolone, pentoxifylline and, partially, piracetam in Ringer lactate solvent on progressive sensorineural hearing loss in childhood and adolescence. Time of observations was 4 years. Unfortunately long-term investigations could not confirm the initially good therapeutic results of 1987/88. In 35% were found permanently and in 12.5% temporarily better auditory thresholds after infusion. This study analyzes correlates of the acceptability of physical punishment of children in Europe. The design was a three-level ordinal logistic regression of 10,812 people nested within 208 localities (cities), nested within 14 countries of the European Union. Results showed that higher levels of acceptability were reported by men, the older, the less educated, and those who perceived that violence against children was less frequent in their own country. A number of studies reviewed here show that those who are exposed to negative child-rearing practices varying from punitive and lax parenting to severe punishment and abuse in childhood tend to be antisocial, aggressive and commit violent crimes later in life. Both the record approach (Widom) studying later outcomes among abused children and the retrospective approach (Lewis) studying violent childhood experiences among offenders provide support for the violence breeds violence hypothesis. The aim of this study is to find constructions of parental responsibility by analysing letters sent by readers to a newspaper on the topic of parenting and parental responsibility. The study takes a methodological approach, focusing on the meanings of responsibility and looking at different portrayals of parenthood. Three dimensions of responsibility (beginning responsibility, diminished sense of responsibility and obligating responsibility) emerged from the analysis.
