Ascorbic acid reduces noise-induced nitric oxide production in the guinea pig ear.

2008

Objectives: Noise-induced hearing loss can be caused, among other causes, by increased nitric oxide (NO) production in the inner ear leading to nitroactive stress and cell destruction. Some studies in the literature suggest that the degree of hearing loss (HL) could be reduced in an animal model through ascorbic acid supplementation. To identify the effect of ascorbic acid on tissue-dependent NO content in the inner ear of the guinea pig, we determined the local NO production in the organ of Corti and the lateral wall separately 6 hours after noise exposure. Study Design: Prospective animal study in guinea pigs. Methods: Over a period of 7 days, male guinea pigs were supplied with minimum (…

Quantitative value of medial femoro-tibial width (FTW) with weight-bearing technique. Our experience with a modified Lyon-Schuss view.

2010

In the period between September 2008 and February 2009, we evaluated with knee radiography a group of 30 patients with known knee osteoarthritis (OA). For each patient, two weight-bearing views of the knee were acquired, the first with a standard antero-posterior (AP) technique, the latter with a posteroanterior (PA) technique with a 10° skull-caudal incidence. The radiographs obtained were evaluated blinded by two radiologist who assessed the medial femoro-tibial width (FTW). Statistical analysis of the results, carried out with the “t” Student test, showed a statistically significant difference about FTW values between the two radiographic views (t = 5.2331 for reader 1 and t=5.1970 for r…

Impact of very low crop residues cover on wind erosion in the Sahel

2011

International audience; In the Sahel, with average annual precipitation in the order of 500 mm yr− 1, wind erosion occurs mainly on cultivated millet fields whose surfaces are only partially covered by crop residues. The impact of these residues on wind erosion was not clearly established. The objective of this study is thus to quantify the actual amount of crop residues in traditional Sahelian fields and to determine their impacts on wind erosion by reference to a bare surface throughout the seasonal cycle over several years. At the beginning of the year during dry season, Sahelian farmers use to "clean" their fields, i.e. cut and lay flat on the soil surface any millet stalks still standi…

Modelling of thermal stresses in bearing steel structure generated by electrical current impulses

2018

This work is the study of one particular candidate for white etching crack (WEC) initiation mechanism in wind turbine gearbox bearings: discharge current impulses flowing through bearing steel with associated thermal stresses and material fatigue. Using data/results from previously published works, the authors develop a series of models that are utilized to simulate these processes under various conditions/local microstructure configurations, as well as to verify the results of the previous numerical studies. Presented models show that the resulting stresses are several orders of magnitude below the fatigue limit/yield strength for the parameters used herein. Results and analysis of models …

Measuring Child-Rearing Values. A Research Note

2012

Abstract Large scale comparative studies, such as the value surveys (EVS and WVS) or the Eurobarometer, include measurements for parental/child-rearing values. This reflects a persistent interest for the topic, which produced salient studies starting with the first half of the twentieth century (Lynd and Lund 1929; Duvall 1946). Various scholars report data on parental values which use versions of the Q-sort methodology (Kohn 1977), ranking variables (Alwin 1990; Lenski 1961), scale indicators (Tulviste et al. 2007). Q-sort methodology remains the most widely employed. One of its versions is included in the value surveys as well. However, it fails to produce comparable indicators in differe…

Interactions in the network of Usher syndrome type 1 proteins

2004

International audience; Defects in myosin VIIa, harmonin (a PDZ domain protein), cadherin 23, protocadherin 15 and sans (a putative scaffolding protein), underlie five forms of Usher syndrome type I (USH1). Mouse mutants for all these proteins exhibit disorganization of their hair bundle, which is the mechanotransduction receptive structure of the inner ear sensory cells, the cochlear and vestibular hair cells. We have previously demonstrated that harmonin interacts with cadherin 23 and myosin VIIa. Here we address the extent of interactions between the five known USH1 proteins. We establish the previously suggested sans-harmonin interaction and find that sans also binds to myosin VIIa. We …

2016

A georeferenced database of the main flint-bearing formations of Southern France is currently being finalised. It offers a toolto all prehistorians that is essential for the development of studies regarding raw material circulation and selection criteria. This database results from the collaborative work of various actors involved in the optimisation of flint source determination. It groups together the results of their surveys — whether these are systematic or targeted — carried out in six regions (Aquitaine, Auvergne, Languedoc-Roussillon, Midi-Pyrénées, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, Rhône-Alpes). This database also incorporates recent studies on registering the properties of palaeoenvironm…

REARING STYLES IN ADOLESCENCE: THEIR RELATION WITH PROSOCIAL BEHAVIOR

2007
