The diagnostic role of saliva - A Review

2011

As a diagnostic fluid, saliva offers distinctive advantages over serum because it can be collected non-invasively by individuals, even by patient. Does not require special equipment for collection and storage as unlike blood saliva does not clot. Advantageous for person in whom blood drawing is difficult as in obese and haemophilic patient. Whole saliva used for diagnosis of systemic diseases, because it contains serum constituents. These constituents are derived from the local vasculature of the salivary glands and gingival cervicular fluid. This review examines the diagnostic application of saliva for hereditary disorders, autoimmune diseases, malignant and infectious diseases, and endocri…

Interest of studying the saliva metabolome, transcriptome and microbiome in screening for pancreatic cancer

2019

Abstract Introduction Pancreatic cancer is a public health problem because its mortality rate is close to its incidence rate. If it were possible to detect this cancer before the onset of symptoms, 5-year survival could reach 75%. Numerous studies have attempted to accelerate the diagnosis to improve survival. Saliva presents interesting characteristics as a fluid for screening and diagnosis. Its many components provide a promising source of constitutive biomarkers with a specific signature of the disease. The aim of this work was to determine the interest of studying the metabolome, the transcriptome and the microbiome of saliva in screening for pancreatic cancer. Materials and methods A r…

Screening for Early Detection of Asymptomatic Coronary Artery Disease (Secondary Prevention): An Approach to Cost/Benefit and Cost/Effectiveness Anal…

1983

Classification of different types of preventive measures for ischemic heart disease (IHD) has been much debated. In the classical use of terms “primary prevention” (prevention of occurrence) includes removal of risk factors in otherwise healthy individuals, while the attempts to change diet and life style in the very early age, in order to avoid the acquisition of risk factors, has been called “preprimary prevention” or “early prevention.”

A genetic algorithm for the design of a fuzzy controller for active queue management

2003

Active queue management (AQM) policies are those\ud policies of router queue management that allow for the detection of network congestion, the notification of such occurrences to the\ud hosts on the network borders, and the adoption of a suitable control\ud policy. This paper proposes the adoption of a fuzzy proportional\ud integral (FPI) controller as an active queue manager for Internet\ud routers. The analytical design of the proposed FPI controller is\ud carried out in analogy with a proportional integral (PI) controller,\ud which recently has been proposed for AQM. A genetic algorithm is\ud proposed for tuning of the FPI controller parameters with respect\ud to optimal disturbance rej…

Traducción y validación preliminar del Cuestionario de Adicción al Sexo en jóvenes

2016

Sex addiction is a pathology that starts in the adolescence or the early adulthood and has an important impact on social and personal development. Early detection is a key issue, so the aim of this study was to adapt and validate one of the most employed questionnaires for its assessment: the Sexual Addiction Screening Test. For this purpose, 600 young people completed the study surveys. Through a factor analysis, we found that the SAST was composed by 4 subscales that explained 38.38% of the variance. Furthermore, reliability and convergent validity values supported its employment in the assessment of sex addiction. Therefore, SAST is now one of the available resources for the assessment o…

Cancer: Clinical Background and Key Challenges

2011

This chapter is aimed at a wide audience ranging from biologists to medical students and cancer specialists. It provides a comprehensive overview of systems approaches to the pathology and treatment of cancer. In particular, it addresses diagnosis and therapy by interconnecting various aspects of cancer at both the molecular and clinical level, and contrasts the unifying features of malignancies with the daunting diversity of cancer types, stages, and evolutionary processes during treatment. The importance is emphasized of both prevention and innovative treatments in reducing the cancer burden, and of early detection as the link between these two major areas. It sets the stage for analysis …

An analytical model of a new packet marking algorithm for TCP flows

2005

In Differentiated Services networks, packets may receive a different treatment according to their Differentiateo Services Code Point (DSCP) label. As a consequence, packet marking schemes can also be devised to differentiate packets belonging to a same TCP flow, with the goal of improving the performance experienced. This paper presents an analytical model for an adaptive packet marking scheme proposed in our previous work. The model combines three specific sub-models aimed at describing (i) the TCP sources aggregate, (ii) the marker, and (iii) the network status. Preliminary simulation results show quite accurate predictions for throughput and average queue occupancy. Besides, the research…

Fibronectin urothelial gene expression as a new reliable biomarker for early detection of local toxicity secondary to adjuvant intravesical therapy f…

2020

Background: A marker of urothelial damage could be helpful for early detection and monitoring of local toxicity due to intravesical therapy for non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). The aim of the study was to investigate the correlation between fibronectin (FN) gene expression in bladder washings and local toxicity secondary to adjuvant intravesical therapy. Materials and methods: Patients undergoing adjuvant intravesical therapy for NMIBC and age-matched healthy patients were enrolled. Real time polymerase chain reaction was performed to analyze FN expression in bladder washings. Local toxicity was classified as: 0–1 mild (no medical therapy), 2 moderate (medical therapy and/or inst…

Robotic versus laparoscopic radical hysterectomy in early cervical cancer: A case matched control study

2018

Abstract Background This study aims at evaluating the feasibility, surgical outcome and oncological results observed after robotic radical hysterectomy (RH) compared to laparoscopy for patients with early stage cervical cancer (ECC) patients. Methods Between January 2010 and October 2016, 210 patients underwent RH for treatment of ECC: 70 underwent robotic approach (Cases), and 140 underwent laparoscopic approach (Controls). Results There was no statistically significant difference between the two approaches with regard to clinical patient characteristics and in terms of extent of RH and rate of pelvic and aortic lymphadenectomy. Operative time was significantly longer in the robotic versus…
