Seed germination in Sarcopoterium spinosum (L.) Spach from South-Eastern Sicily

2012

Sarcopoterium spinosum (L.) Spach is a nanophanerophyte whose presence in Sicily is limited to the South-East of the island. A study on seed germination behaviour of seeds collected from some populations indicates low viability of seedlings which could seriously put the long-term survival of these populations at risk.

Meristic character counts and incidence of skeletal anomalies in the wild Diplodus puntazzo (Cetti, 1777) of an area of the south-eastern Mediterrane…

2006

The sharpsnout seabream (Diplodus puntazzo, Cetti 1777) is a species rarely found in coastal areas of Sicily, but is important in Mediterranean aquaculture. In order to detect the number of meristic characters and the main types of body deformation, 588 specimens of sharpsnout seabream were collected from a coastal zone of south-east Sicily (Licata, AG—Italy). Different sized classes were examined and the relationship between size and the number of meristic characters (number of fin rays) was found. The number of vertebrae, anal fin hard rays and dorsal fin hard rays was constant and did not vary with size. Seventeen types of skeletal and fin anomalies were observed, but no grave anomalies …

First record of Pachygrapsus transversus (Gibbes, 1850) (Brachyura, Grapsidae) in Italian waters

2005

[Pachygrapsus transversus (Gibbes, 1850) is reported for the first time from Italian waters. This crab was collected at Ustica Island and at several other localities on NW Sicily (southern Tyrrhenian Sea) on vermetid reefs, an intertidal habitat frequent in the sampling area. P. transversus, whose distributional range covers the warm and warm-temperate areas of the eastern and western Atlantic and the eastern Pacific, was already known from the eastern Mediterranean since the 1920s; prior to this paper it was recorded in the western Mediterranean only in 1980 and 1994 with very few specimens. There are no data to ascertain the origin of the Sicilian population, i.e., natural or ship-mediated…

Perforazione della Caldera dei Campi Flegrei - Una proposta anfibia IODP-ICDP

2018

Active calderas are major volcanic features of the Earth’s crust associated with shallow magma reservoirs, high geothermal gradients, and geodynamic unrests often documented through historical time. As large caldera-forming eruptions are also among the most catastrophic events that may affect the Earth’s surface, calderas are ostensibly the sites of major interest for both the scientific community and governmental institutions worldwide. The Campi Flegrei is an active volcanic area located west of the city of Naples, largely on the continental shelf of the Eastern Tyrrhenian margin that has been characterized by dominantly explosive eruptions during the latest Quaternary. This is one among …

Comparing marine geology and coastal geomorphology vertical tectonic data, a case study between Acquedolci and Patti (Messina)

2011

The study of new data on vertical movements show a complex geologic response in a restricted sector of coastal area between Acquedolci and Patti (north-eastern Sicily). Different surveys allowed to the recognition of morphological, biological and archaeological markers of paleo-sea level. The analysis of these markers and the absolute datings performed, allowed to reconstruct the history of vertical deformation of this sector but only the comparison among coastal geomorphological data and marine geological data of platform-scarp continental system associates, allowed to find the necessary keys words to explain the geologic complexity of this sector.

Spatial extent of recent vertical tectonic motions misured in NE Sicily coastal area. Insights from marine geology and coastal geomorphology studies.

2011

Vertical position of sea-level, pointed out by related deposits and morphologies, provide useful markers to estimate tectonic uplift rates. For the Holocene very high uplift rates are misured in the northeast Sicily coast (Antonioli et al., 2009). This study compare vertical tectonic movements and marine geology data in the coastal sector between Capo d’Orlando and Brolo (NE Sicily); tectonic lineaments show different trends both onland (Nigro & Sulli, 1995) and offshore (Nicolich et al.,1982) and also the morphological response follow closely this difference. The geomorphologic survey provided data on Holocene uplift rates. We studied an archaeological ancient quarry of grinding wheels for…

Multiscale integrated approach to understand the structure and evolution of the Neapolitan Yellow Tuff (NYT) caldera off the Campi Flegrei, eastern T…

2016

Resurgent calderas are among the largest and most dynamic volcanic structures on earth. They are typically associated with major eruptions with considerable volumes of pyroclastic deposits accompanied by large collapse structures and late stage deformation and uplift of the intra-caldera floor region. The Campi Flegrei is a vast volcanic area located on the coastal zone of the Campania region of SW Italy, a large part of which develops off the Naples (Pozzuoli) Bay. The area has been active since at least ~80 ka BP and is structurally dominated by a caldera collapse, ca. 8 km in diameter, associated with the eruption of the Neapolitan Yellow Tuff (NYT), a 30–50 km3 Dense Rock Equivalent ign…

Riti musicali del cordoglio in Sicilia

2014

Musical Mourning Rituals in Sicily

2017

This article surveys various vocal and instrumental performances (chants, laments, calls, sounds of church bells and drums, band music) connected to the ritual celebration and commemoration of the dead that are still characterized in Sicily by a manifest syncretism between Christian Church rules and folk customs and beliefs. These “sounds of mourning” are examined in terms of both their musical aspects and their social and symbolic functions, with special attention given to the changing dynamics between the present day and the recent past. The focus also extends to include celebrations in which “fictitious funerals” are performed, such as those for Christ during the Easter procession and fo…
