A kink that makes you sick : The effect of sick pay on absence

We exploit a regression kink design to estimate the elasticity of the duration of sickness absence with respect to replacement rate. Elasticity is a central parameter in defining the optimal social insurance scheme compensating for lost earnings due to sickness. We use comprehensive administrative data and a kink in the policy rule near the median earnings. We find a statistically significant estimate of the elasticity of the order of one. peerReviewed
Unbundling Technology Adoption andtfpat the Firm Level: Do Intangibles Matter?

We use a panel of European firms to investigate the relationship between intangible assets and productivity. We distinguish between total factor productivity (tfp) and technology adoption, whereas standard estimations consider only a notion of productivity that conflates the two effects. Although we are unable to address simultaneity, we allow for the existence of multiple technologies within sectors through a mixture model approach. We find that intangible assets have nonnegligible effects that both push firms toward better technologies (technology adoption effects) and allow for more efficient exploitation of a given technology (tfp effects).

Time and frequency dynamics of connectedness between renewable energy stocks and crude oil prices

Abstract This paper examines the time and frequency dynamics of connectedness among stock prices of U.S. clean energy companies, crude oil prices and a number of key financial variables using the methodology developed by Barunik and Krehlik (2018). This approach allows measuring the dynamics of return and volatility connectedness over time and across frequencies simultaneously. The empirical results show that most of return and volatility connectedness is generated in the very short-term, i.e. movements up to five days, while the long-term plays a minor role. Abstract This paper extends the literature on the relationship between oil price shocks and financial markets by examining the effect of oil shocks on the sovereign bond markets of a large number of advanced and emerging economies and exploring the impact of oil shocks on the degree of connectedness among international financial markets. We show that the effect of oil price shocks is not only limited to stock market returns, but also extends to bond markets, even after controlling for discount rate shocks as well as aggregate capital market effects. Abstract This paper assesses social progress in 139 countries over the period 1995–2017 following the framework proposed by the Social Progress Imperative; a notable contribution is a composite index allowing for comparisons across countries and over time. The index considers 45 raw indicators covering three fundamental pillars of social progress: basic human needs, foundations of well-being, and opportunities. The results point to a marked improvement in social progress all over the world from the mid-1990s, although they also depict a highly polarized world. La corrupción en la economía pública en España está generando muchas y muy diversas propuestas de medidas para combatirla. En este trabajo se presenta un método de ordenación de dichas medidas a partir de una combinación de dos teorías criminológicas, la Teoría de las Expectativas Racionales y la Teoría de las Actividades Rutinarias. El método distingue cuatro espacios de riesgo de corrupción articulados en torno al ciclo de las políticas públicas: delincuentes, guardianes, escenarios y víctimas. En cada uno de estos espacios la política anticorrupción posee una naturaleza diferente y, en consecuencia, unos objetivos e instrumentos específicos.
