When does Regression discontinuity design work? Evidence from random election outcomes

2018

We use elections data in which a large number of ties in vote counts between candidates are resolved via a lottery to study the personal incumbency advantage. We benchmark non‐experimental regression discontinuity design (RDD) estimates against the estimate produced by this experiment that takes place exactly at the cutoff. The experimental estimate suggests that there is no personal incumbency advantage. In contrast, conventional local polynomial RDD estimates suggest a moderate and statistically significant effect. Bias‐corrected RDD estimates that apply robust inference are, however, in line with the experimental estimate. Therefore, state‐of‐the‐art implementation of RDD can meet the re…

Stability and Change in Diffusion Model Parameters over Two Years

2021

In recent years, mathematical models of decision making, such as the diffusion model, have been endorsed in individual differences research. These models can disentangle different components of the decision process, like processing speed, speed–accuracy trade-offs, and duration of non-decisional processes. The diffusion model estimates individual parameters of cognitive process components, thus allowing the study of individual differences. These parameters are often assumed to show trait-like properties, that is, within-person stability across tasks and time. However, the assumption of temporal stability has so far been insufficiently investigated. With this work, we explore stability and c…

Individual differences in adaptive choice strategies

2003

Abstract Individual differences in compensatory and non-compensatory choice processes remain an unresolved issue for decision process researchers. This study investigates the stability and nature of individual differences in choice processes when individuals adapt to changes in the structure of the choice environment, namely the correlation among the choice attributes. By means of process tracing techniques, between-subjects differences in choice processing (option-based or attribute based) were found to be stable across different tasks. Individuals with higher openness to experience and ability to solve reasoning tasks were found to be more adaptive, that is to switch more promptly their c…

Network embeddedness and new product development in the biopharmaceutical industry: The moderating role of open innovation flow

2015

This paper explores the role of centrality and structural holes positions on the likelihood to develop new products and the moderating role of the open innovation flow, a measure of the net knowledge flow crossing the firm’s boundaries, on the aforementioned relation. We argue that network positions provide the information content to the firm, whilst open innovation flow describes how the firm uses such content, thus the combination of these two concepts has a significant impact on new product development. We test the theoretical framework on a large sample of 544 public companies and data from 1758 agreements among 1890 bio-pharmaceutical firms through the period 2006–2010. Our results sho…

EU income stabilization tool: potential impacts, financial sustainability and farmer’s risk aversion

2021

AbstractThe Income Stabilization Tool, a risk management scheme introduced within the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) 2014–2020, could help European Union farmers manage the income risks they face. This study assesses the potential impact of implementing this tool through the maximum level of contribution to the fund which determines an indifference to participate in the fund and its financial sustainability. The study relies on an expected utility approach and assesses the variability of loss ratios over time using a sample of Italian hazelnut farms as a case study. The participation depends on the level of farmers' contributions and their degree of risk aversion. However, the CAP public …

Research and Development Expenditures and Economic Growth in the EU: A Panel Data Analysis

2016

Abstract The main aim of the paper is to investigate the empirical relationship between research and development (R&D) expenditures and economic growth in the European Union member states in the period of 2000–2013. The empirical analysis is based on panel data regressions. The estimated model is the production function type standard growth model extended with R&D stock variable. The results show a statistically significant impact of R&D expenditures on the economic growth in the EU countries. The significance for R&D coefficient remains robust to different sub-periods, but the level of significance decreases as a sub-sample of new EU countries was considered.

How Intellectual Capital is Made?

2021

Abstract Worldwide organizations are compelled by global competition to achieve notable, inimitable results. In order to achieve this organizations must differentiate themselves from their competitors by using intangible resources that can get the long-term competitive advantage. This can be accomplished by identifying and managing the important elements of performance more effectively and efficiently. Consequently, organizations have to be aware and understand the connection between valuing intellectual capital and their performance. This article enhances the relationship between intellectual capital indicators and the measures to be taken in order to become strong innovators at european l…

Changes in Brand-Related Consumer Loyalty in the Current Pandemic Context

2021

Abstract The current medical crisis and, implicitly, the economic one, generated by the Covid-19 pandemic have brought increased attention to the issue of brand-related consumer loyalty, as loyal consumers are the safest and most stable source of profit in the current economic and social context. It is well-known that there is no equality between the notions of consumer satisfaction and loyalty. The two notions are not synonymous, as consumer satisfaction is only a relative, but not sufficient condition to obtain consumer loyalty. This paper aims to take a systemic approach in discussing the issue of brand-related consumer loyalty, starting from the inputs, respectively the favorable factor…

The Importance of the Sustainability of the Romanian Convergence Process to the Euro Zone

2018

Abstract Since 2007, Romania has been under the under the glance of experts in the European Union, but also under the strict monitoring of the NBR and also under the pressure of citizens and investors' expectations about the moment of euro adoption. My research concerns have also been channeled to this point of maximum interest, impact and timeliness, which is why I have proposed through this paper to highlight a synthetic situation regarding the fulfillment of the convergence criteria from the moment of accession to the European Union, to the present. The objective of this paper is to reflect, in dynamics and correlation, the degree of fulfillment of the nominal and real convergence criter…

Creating Value – From Corporate Governance to Total Shareholders Return. An Overview

2016

Abstract The term “value” can be interpreted in a subjective way, depending about what we refer at. Usually the firm's value is related to the financial performance: profitability, cash flow, liquidity, solvability, etc. A corporation can create and in some cases reduce value for its stakeholders. Also, a corporation can create value for the stakeholders by simply creating jobs, paying taxes and help the population to improve their financial situation. The aim of the paper is to describe the process of value creation starting with corporate governance, continuing with stakeholders’ expectations and finishing with shareholders requests.
