An assessment of energy vulnerability in Small Island Developing States

2020

Abstract Small Island Developing States (SIDS) suffer from several structural characteristics that jeopardize their ability to achieve a sustainable energy future. Their reliance on imported fossil fuels exacerbates their exposure to external threats on international energy markets. Their energy systems are also exposed to internal disturbances that disrupt the proper production, transmission and distribution of energy. The aim of this paper is to investigate the extent to which island energy systems are vulnerable to shocks and internal dysfunctions over which they have no control. For this purpose, we build a composite index of energy vulnerability using the Multi-Layer Benefit-of-the-Dou…

European Banking System - Before and After Brexit -

2021

Abstract The history of the last 15 years has been marked by many events at European level, some which led to the last wave of EU enlargement in 2013, with the accession of Croatia, others that led European authorities to take radical action in order to overcome the crisis of 2007-2008, and recently the pandemic crisis of 2020, and the others that marked the first contraction of the European Union since its establishment, together with the decision of Great Britain to no longer be part of the European Union, a phenomenon known as Brexit. Starting from the important role that Great Britain played in the European Union, London being a famous financial and banking center, through this paper we…

The Problem of the First Belief: Group Agents and Responsibility

2020

Abstract Attributing moral responsibility to an agent requires that the agent is a capable member of a moral community. Capable members of a moral community are often thought of as moral reasoners (or moral persons) and, thus, to attribute moral responsibility to collective agents would require showing that they are capable of moral reasoning. It is argued here that those theories that understand collective reasoning and collective moral agency in terms of collective decision-making and commitment – as is arguably the case with Christian List and Philip Pettit’s theory of group agency – face the so-called “problem of the first belief” that threatens to make moral reasoning impossible for gr…

Romania and the Big Challenge of Implementing the Europe 2020 Strategy

2017

Abstract The evolution and evolvement of the Europe 2020 strategy in each country are subjects, which should interest all European citizens. The investigation on this subject stems from two issues: firstly, the importance of knowing the direction in which Europe is going in the future, and, secondly the wish to assess whether this is the right direction. Unfortunately, due to several possible obstacles, such as level of development, not all countries have the ability to achieve performance in all fields. Romania, just like many other countries, is one example. Being one of the least developed countries, reaching success in implementing the Europe 2020 strategy is, for Romania, a difficult m…

The Triple Layered Business Model Canvas Meets the Beekeeping Sector. General and Particular Considerations from the Romanian Industry

2020

Abstract Today, sustainability has been clearly recognized as a necessity at global level by many, and the role of the business environment as a contributor in ensuring sustainability has become more and more acknowledged lately. Several efforts undertaken in this direction were focused on obtaining higher life quality levels and long-term benefits through businesses’ actions. Exploring and understanding agri-businesses from a managerial perspective becomes necessary due to sector’s particularities, but also to the fact that they are generally small enterprises, deeply embedded into their local communities. Beekeeping, as an agricultural branch, has indispensable contributions at societal a…

Environmental Management Systems (Ems) - Control Instrument of the Impact of the Organization Activities on the Environment

2015

Abstract Due to the ability to create and use technology, the human being has found various ways to transform the resources of the Earth in all sorts of new materials, equipment and energy sources. At least since the last industrial revolution until now, each generation has added more technology to the received legacy, but at the same time, left the planet in a far more degraded state than the inherited condition. Within these changes, small and medium enterprises (SME) in their capacity as pillars of the economic development of a nation, have been compelled to change their previous strategies. Implementing an Environmental Management Systems (EMS) can be seen as the only way to connect the…

Institutional Logics, ICT and Stability of Management Accounting

2009

The purpose of this paper is to study the institutional logics of how and why two case units in the Finnish Defence Forces have reacted differently to external pressures originating from the State Audit Office to change their management accounting systems. The situation is made complex due to the fact that in military organisations, accountants’ tasks have traditionally consisted of bookkeeping and financial reporting, while management accounting tasks especially (e.g. planning and control) have been performed predominantly by military personnel, who can be called hybrid accountants. The data for this study consists of project memos and interviews with people involved in designing and imple…

Identification of clusters of investors from their real trading activity in a financial market

2012

We use statistically validated networks, a recently introduced method to validate links in a bipartite system, to identify clusters of investors trading in a financial market. Specifically, we investigate a special database allowing to track the trading activity of individual investors of the stock Nokia. We find that many statistically detected clusters of investors show a very high degree of synchronization in the time when they decide to trade and in the trading action taken. We investigate the composition of these clusters and we find that several of them show an over-expression of specific categories of investors.
