Ecologists overestimate the importance of predictor variables in model averaging: a plea for cautious interpretations.

2014

Abstract: Information-theory procedures are powerful tools for multimodel inference and are now standard methods in ecology. When performing model averaging on a given set of models, the importance of a predictor variable is commonly estimated by summing the weights of models where the variable appears, the so-called sum of weights (SW). However, SWs have received little methodological attention and are frequently misinterpreted. We assessed the reliability of SW by performing model selection and averaging on simulated data sets including variables strongly and weakly correlated to the response variable and a variable unrelated to the response. Our aim was to investigate how useful SWs are …

A Contribution to the Schumpeterian Growth Theory and Empirics

2010

International R&D spillovers in the multi-country Schumpeterian growth model

2007

en ligne : http://ungaro.u-bourgogne.fr/pages/Documents%20de%20travail/Economie/e2007-04.pdf; Document de travail du LEG 2007-04; This paper reconsiders the multi-country Schumpeterian growth model and its empirical implications. We first show that the model implies a spatial econometric reduced form. Indeed, the global interdependence implied by international R&D spillovers needs to betaken into account in the theoretical model as well as in the empirical model. The spatial econometric model we propose includes the neoclassical growth model as a particular case. We can therefore test explicitly the role of R&D investment in the long run growth processagainst the Solow growth model which is…

Multinationals, R&D and productivity: Evidence for UK Manufacturing firms

2010

In this study, we analyze multinationality (domestic-based firms versus multinationals) and foreignness (foreign versus domestic firms) effects in the returns of R&D to productivity. We follow a two-step strategy. In the first step, we consistently estimate firm's productivity by GMM and numerically compute the sample distribution of the R&D returns. In the second step, we use stochastic dominance techniques to make inferences on the multinationality and foreignness effects. Results for a panel of UK manufacturing firms suggest that multinationality and foreignness effects operate in an opposite way: whilst the multinationality effect enhances R&D returns, the foreignness diminishes them. Effects of responsible human resource management practices on female employees’ turnover intentions

2017

This study focuses on the effects of socially responsible human resource management (SR-HRM) practices on female employees’ turnover intentions and the moderating effect of supervisor gender on this relationship. With a sample of 212 female employees from eight different industries in Finland, the results indicate that SR-HRM practices promoting equal career opportunities and work–family integration play a significant role in reducing women's turnover intentions. The study adds to the academic discourse of corporate social responsibility by highlighting the impact of the organizational-level HRM determinants on the individual-level outcome. In addition, supervisor gender makes a difference …

Theory of storage implications in the European natural gas market

2023

The theory of storage stands that futures prices should be equal to the spot price plus the interest forgone in storing the commodity and the warehousing costs minus the convenience yield on the inventory. In this paper, we test several implications of the theory of storage on the pricing of United Kingdom natural gas futures. We obtain partial evidence for the theory of storage as a complete explanation of the pricing of this futures contract. Explicitly, (i) we obtain evidence to explain convenience yield seasonality with spot price volatility, unexpected demand shocks when supply is tight, inventory variations, and trading activity in the futures markets; (ii) we obtain indirect evidence…

A note on normalization schemes: The case of generalized forecast error variance decompositions

2016

The aim of this paper is to propose new normalization schemes for the values obtained from the generalized forecast error variance decomposition, in order to obtain more reliable net spillover measures. We provide a review of various matrix normalization schemes used in different application domains. The intention is to contribute to the financial econometrics literature aimed at building a bridge between different approaches able to detect spillover effects, such as spatial regressions and network analyses. Considering DGPs characterized by different degrees of correlation and persistence, we show that the popular row normalization scheme proposed by Diebold and Yilmaz (2012), as well as t…
