Understanding how Human Resource Knowledge Accumulation, Depletion Processes impact on a Service Firm Performance

2016

This paper outlines how soft stock variables, such as human resource knowledge and more broadly Intellectual Capital (IC), accumulation and depletion processes are dynamically interrelated with firm performance. To this goal, the author suggests a framework making explicit the relationships between policy levers, strategic resources, drivers, end-results and performance indicators. The author argues that to explain a firm superior performance, it is not sufficient to look at the endowment of strategic resources in a given moment of time; it is instead required to investigate over time company strategic resources accumulation and depletion processes and how such assets are interconnected wit…

Exploring intellectual capital in a call centre through a 'system dynamics' resource based view

2008

This paper examines alternative Intellectual Capital (IC) investment policies in a dynamically com plex system in order to explain differences in firm performance. The analysis is supported through the use of a System Dynamics (SD) simulation model. This paper is based on the hypothesis that in order to explain superior performance, it is not sufficient to look at the endowment of strategic resources; it also requires an analysis of the dynamics of resource accumulation and depletion processes, which stem from management policies. To assess the impact of ICon company performance, a conceptual framework and an SD simulation model are developed. Finally, the results from alternative scenario…

Using a Dynamic Performance Management approach to reinforce the benefits of territorial strategic planning

2013

The purpose of this paper is to present how system dynamics (SD) can be used to enrich performance management in local government and to foster a common shared view of the relevant system’s structure and behavior among stakeholders for territorial strategic planning. We begin by framing how dynamic complexity through SD modeling can support consensus building among different stakeholders within a territory, which moves beyond the traditional view of strategic planning within the context of a single jurisdiction. A Dynamic Performance Management (DPM) approach, as shown by our case-study, may help such players to overcome possible barriers to collaboration because of its support to better de…

Measuring and Managing the Performance of Territories as a hybrid field of study and practice: a System Dynamics Approach

2014

The purpose of this paper is to illustrate how system dynamics (SD) modeling can be used to enrich performance management in local government and to foster a common shared view of the relevant system’s structure and behavior among stakeholders for territorial strategic planning. This is a quite hybrid field of analysis in performance measurement/management. In fact, in this context, performance is not primarily related to the single institutions in a regional area; it is rather associated to the territory where they operate. We begin by showing how framing dynamic complexity through SD modeling can support consensus building among different stakeholders in a territory. This shifts the atten…

Enhancing Collaborative Governance to Build Active Citizenship through Social Inclusion in Historical Neighborhood Regeneration: A Dynamic Performanc…

2021

Active citizenship and collaborative governance can be supported to enhance urban regeneration and social inclusion through Dynamic Performance Governance (DPG). The problem of urban decay and urban decline is identified as the main problem that continues to affect cities and urban areas. The study focuses on the urban regeneration experience of the historic urban neighborhood of Ballaro which is located in the historic city of Palermo. Urban regeneration is essential for transforming urban neighborhoods which are at risk of decline and blight. However, the lack of a social aspect such as social inclusion through active citizenship was identified to affect the sustainability of urban regene…

Reframing the systemic approach to complex organizations as intangible portfolios

2012

The aim of this paper is to pave the way towards the inclusion of mainstream sociological approaches (based on Luhmann’s approach) for the studies of firms-organizations. In social sciences we can observe that the theoretic consequences of a paradigm shift is signiicantly represented by the evolution of systemic thinking from Parsons to Luhmann. This shift implies the change from the vision of systemic organizations as “structures” to that of systemic organizations as “communication flows”. The milestone of systemic approach in management maybe found in the research and applied works of Anthony Staford Beer with his Viable System Model (VSM) that today faced a relevant reconiguration by Gol…

Why Does Systems Thinking Matter?

2012

The social and economic complexity of our times triggers intense transformations in the competitive logics of markets and, broadly speaking, of business systems. Business scenarios today are typified by dynamism, connectivity, nonlinearity, and emergent properties—in other words by "complexity". Asserting that the world, and consequently business systems, are complex means that it is impossible to understand them by considering their individual elements separately, and that there is no option of predicting the future, but only of grasping and proactively influencing future scenarios. Reductionist models are unable to fully depict, or to allow us to deeply understand, new complex and dynamic…

El impuesto sobre servicios digitales en Italia

2020

Monetary Policy Rules: From Adam Smith to John Taylor

2012

We describe, through the lenses of history, the intellectual origins of the Taylor rule. The Taylor rule was an important component of the transformation that swept through the monetary policy landascape in a remarkable few years following the abandonment of monetary targeting. In this long paper we provide an original overview of the long-dated debate on rules vs discretion in monetary policy, ever since Adam Smith and the monetary controversies of the XIX century. We then analyse in greater detail the debates in the interwar years (Wicksell, Keynes, Cassel, Simons, Fisher) and the debates in the 1950s and 1960s (Phillips, Friedman, the rational expectation hipothesis) and how these debate…

I Conti del Teatro Massimo. Contesto economico-politico e Analisi dei flussi finanziari

2018
