2009
Policies for Innovation in Sicilia: Origins, Activities and Limits. This article examines origins, activities and limitations of the regional policies for fostering innovation conceived and implemented in Sicily during the last decade, by focusing on three relevant sectors of Sicilian economy: agrifood, industrial manufacturing and tourism. The study moves from the observation of the mounting relevance that innovation diffusion policy has assumed in regional territorial contexts, which have the greatest meaning in times of global-local dialectic (“glocalization”). In particular, the leading hypothesis is that for Sicilian micro, small and medium-sized firms operating in international settin…

2016
The Relationship between Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Economic Growth: a Comparison between Italian Macro-Regions. This work is part of the scientific debate on the relationship between innovation and economic growth. In this paper the study of this quite complex and bidirectional relationship has been enhanced by a third factor that is entrepreneurship as a driving force for the development of local economies. Entrepreneurship can play a key role, especially for the regions of Southern Italy marked by significant delays in development than the regions of Central/North. The paper try to launch a reflection on the role of the University in the creation of entrepreneurship through two spe…
Innovazione e sviluppo locale in Sicilia
2009
The role of system dynamics to unveil the complexity of academic missions. An integrated approach for entrepreneurial universities’ performance evalu…
2023
The third mission concept implies that universities are expected to perform several diversified activities besides teaching (first mission) and scientific research (second mission). Third mission efforts may include activities such as knowledge dissemination, technological innovation, social innovation, advisory services, or entrepreneurship. Through third mission activities, universities engage in sustainable, inclusive development and/or territorial competitiveness by interacting with a wide range of subjects far beyond their students and reference scientific communities. The third mission’s activities vary a lot according to the specific characteristics of each university, the territory …

The market of migrant smuggling through Libya to Southern Italy since 2011: filling the knowledge gap as a human rights' strategy
2018
The first formal distinction between human smuggling and trafficking in international law was made with the signing in December 2000 of the Palermo Protocols. These definitions have influenced and shaped most of the academic research, discourse, methodology and language on human smuggling and trafficking. In turn, an understanding of the formal definitions of these crimes is necessary to appreciate their influence on policies and therefore their effects on the individuals and institutions involved (Campana and Varese, 2015). The argument at the basis of this thesis is that academic research on especially migrant smuggling has often blindly adopted the above-mentioned definitions as a given-…
Risultati:…
Adopting sustainable irrigation technologies in Italy: a study on the determinants of inter- and intra-farm diffusion
2023
This paper analyses the drivers for adopting irrigation systems with water conservation and saving technologies (WCSTs) by Italian farmers. The agricultural sector in Italy, like in other Mediterranean countries, suffers from water scarcity and water endowment variability. Water resources play a decisive role in agricultural production and in implementing large-scale WCSTs capable of improving the resilience of the whole agricultural sector. This study uses a microeconomic panel data approach to estimate farmers' decisions in adopting (inter-farm) sustainable irrigation technologies and assesses the intensity of (intra-farm) water-saving practices. Our analysis identifies the main determina…
