Urban—Rural Flows and the Meaning of Borders
2009
This article focuses on political and everyday interplay and integration between city and hinterland, investigating borders and boundaries in such interplay. Five Norwegian city-regions served as the empirical basis for analysing two empirical fields. In the first field — everyday mobility and flow — institutionalized interactions between the cities and their hinterlands were analysed as well as objectives and meaning as motivations in everyday mobility in the city-region between city and hinterland. In the second field — urban-regional economic development policy — the questions addressed related to the degree to which governance networks are developed as a tool in local economic developm…
CULTURA E SVILUPPO. IDEE E STRUMENTI. INTRODUZIONE PER UN DIBATTITO
2016
The causal link between culture and development is extremely complex and is expressed by following patterns that can not be traced inside of unitary or homogeneous analytical schemes. In this debate, there is a broad acknowledgement that «culture matters». First of all, and even more than in the past, as a source of externalities with …

2014
Anotācija Promocijas darba mērķis ir novērtēt Latvijas ūdenssaimniecības apakšnozares attīstības priekšnosacījumus, pamatojoties uz ES fondu līdzfinansēto projektu apakšnozarē rezultātu analīzi pašvaldību griezumā. Latvijā ES fondu finansējums 2007.-2013.gadā pārsniedz 4,5 miljardus eiro, būtiski ieguldījumi ir veikti ūdenssaimniecības sistēmu sakārtošanā. Neskatoties uz to ūdenssaimniecības apakšnozare Latvijā nav plaši pētīta, kas ir skaidrojams ar to, ka, pieņemot nepieciešamību ieviest ES normatīvajos aktos paredzētos standartus attiecībā uz šo pakalpojumu sniegšanu, otrajā plānā ir palikusi nepieciešamība pārliecināties par ieguldījumu rezultātiem. Pētījuma aktualitāte ir saistīta arī …

El desarrollo local sostenible en clave estratégica
2008
This article considers local development from the point of view of the ecological sustainability of the economic process. We put forward ideas that help to provide a view of local development that is in line with the concept of sustainable development. First we take a strategic approach to the idea of economic development as a material process, describing the capacities on which it is based. We then highlight the fundamental features of the strategic view of local development, which has created wealth over the last two decades, and the trends that question the current model of development. All of this will help us justify the need for a change of model and the importance of local involvemen…

Words without meaning? Examining sustainable development terminology through small states and territories
2021
Small states and territories have plenty of examples to offer of sustainable development as well as for analysing the terminology used in sustainable development. This paper uses conceptual discussion supported by specific examples from small states and territories to explore these issues, demonstrating limitations and improvements to contemporary sustainable development terminology. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) frequently illustrate the points, for which this paper examines water, waste, and energy. These three are built on for examining climate change through a slightly polemical discussion which mirrors the polemics of sustainable development terminology. Small states and ter…
